Minecraft Gear VR has just lauched

I read the title as 'metal gear VR has just launched' and was super excited for this thing I had never heard of that doesn't exist. Bad times.

This is the one that everyone's worried about poisoning the well, right?

Kind of. At least they're showing off the "Deep TV" mode, which people say is fine.

Minecraft already has performance issues as it is, and VR needs rock-solid framerates. Driving yourself directly with a controller is also not the best. GearVR is a good platform, but it's not 970 level for sure. Carmack himself has been working on it, almost slavishly, so you know it's tuned tightly, but even he's expressed concerns. And there's the comments about it not being totally stereoscopic, but I can't confirm that yet.

Lots of people just got new Galaxy phones with free GearVRs. If this has problems, especially adverse reactions by kids, we're going to hear about it. I think this is about as close to an "Electric Porygon" episode test VR will get for some time.

I didn't see it said here, but one thing I noticed is that the "3D" is actually turned off by default, and turning it on impacts your framerate significantly.

But there's a bunch of visual settings you can tweak to affect performance.

Anyone buy it and have impressions?

I prefer the Minecrift Vive mode because of the teleportation locomotion rather than the stick control the official version has. It's fine for what it is, though, and runs well even on my Note 4. It's pretty neat that I can have one person play on my Note 4 and join them in the same game with the desktop version.

But overall I feel the mod has bested the official version on desktop. It's neat to having it running on a portable, though.

I'd love to grab Gear VR, but since the Note 4 isn't supported in the retail model, the innovator edition is WAAAY too expensive to justify the purchase.

This is the one I use with my GearVR, and it's pretty good. Don't go for the Hero or anything like that, there is a major difference.

Edit: Whoa, seems the reviews say the Moga Pro DOESN'T work with this for some reason, but I'm sure that's temporary. It's a triggers problem right now?

Moga Pro works with this in B mode instead of A mode. I was using the Moga Pro to play it earlier.

If you have steel file then you can just buy retail model, make some little changes to it and it will work even with note 4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64424147&postcount=55 Only thing that is not working USB charging through Gear VR USB port but that'll be probably because of HW incompatibility.

Got this earlier yesterday, really like the zoom in transition from the house+tv to being surrounded by the world. Have played the Minecrift mod on the dk1, dk2, and most recently the Vive so of course this pales in comparison to those with lower draw distance, no shaders, texture packs and so on, but it's still just ridiculously cool that you're playing Minecraft on a mobile VR hmd, getting to just chill in bed with it is a super relaxing experience. Was thinking performance would be iffy with 3d on seeing as it's off by default but can report it runs smoothly. Hoping the "Realms" portion unlocks soonish and at least some rudimentary multiplayer, would love to be able to explore a fleshed out creative server. Well worth the money.

Is there gonna be an official vr update for the non mobile/windows10 version? I refuse to play the new minecraft versions.

God damn that sounds so cool. I want to try Minecraft in VR so bad. I saw that article not too long ago claiming that Minecraft in VR was just making everyone sick. I imagine that this swivel chair solution could actually do away with that.

Minecraft on Vive is great, can't imagine playing it on a gamepad after trying it.

But in VR generally, even something like standing on a ledge and watching the sunset is something else, so it's still worth it if you can't access the Vive.

So how is this? How do you control it? I got the GearVR with my S7 Edge but haven't used it all that much.
It's minecraft in VR. As someone who plays minecraft with my friends a lot this is a bug fucking deal for me lol.
A game pad is required to play

Im not sure if this has been out there but Minecraft full version with room scale and controller tracking has been working on Vive for weeks.

Carmack bested by a dude programming it a few weeks.

There's quite a bit of difference between getting it to work on a cell phone (GearVR) at full VR framerate, and on a powerful PC (Vive). I think Carmack's version is in no way bested by a hack of the old Minecrift hack :)

The game is awesome. It seems to run fine on my Note 5, and is even usable (I say usable because I'm fine with it, but it may not be up to snuff for others) with 3D turned on, which I think is the way to go for sure. My biggest issue is getting used to playing the game with a gamepad, so I drop stuff and open the wrong menus a lot, haha.

As far as how it plays in regards to the VR aspect, I find it works pretty well. The TV mode is super cool, and I felt fine playing it. In that mode, you can still use your head as a mouse to highlight blocks and stuff, which is great. The true VR mode is probably not for those who get sick quickly, BUT, they do have a handful of comfort options available (and when you load it up, the first menu you get is asking if you want the comfort options turned on or off, but you can change those to how you like in the options later).

I kept it on the mellow setting (so it adjusts the jump animation, rotation snapping is on, etc.), and I was able to play for 30+ minutes. By the end of that, I had only started to feel the slightest tinge off, but that is MUCH longer than I expected to last. I could have played more, but had some other stuff I needed to do, and I've heard (and experienced) that its a bad idea to try and push through motion sickness with this stuff.

I really can't handle smooth movement with an analog stick in VR games yet, so I'm using the angle snapping. I personally don't have a problem with that, but others don't like it, so ymmv. I have a swivel chair, but the way my desk is set up, I can't do a full 360. Oddly enough though, doing full 360's in my chair in other Gear VR games has actually made me feel ill quite quickly, so I'm not in a rush to make some space and check it out at the moment (I'm thinking because I don't stay perfectly still while turning, and since there is no positional tracking, it really screws me up if I move around too much).

Regardless, it has got me back into checking out Minecraft once again, and I'm stoked to check out the mod version on the Vive when that gets to me.

Just bought (quadruple dipped :o)... its very polished but I still feel like throwin up after about 15mins of movement.. we need GearVR positional tracking stat! Maybe a beacon addon or something for the camera to track.

I've read that people with Note 4 can play :)

You'd need the Note 4 Innovator Edition which I think is quite expensive though (or mod a new GearVR, but there's a pretty big risk).

I bought mine for $200 when they first came out, and it's been worth it. They seem to sell consistently for lower than that on eBay.

And yes, it's offering it to me on my Note 4.

Heck yes. Carmack remarked on that recently. There really needs to be something, because it's so great otherwise being untethered. I really dig my Vive, but that cord is always stealing a small fraction of your attention out of necessity.

I don't think anyone else has said but it works fine with other pocket editions and Windows 10 edition for MP. I was in VR while my fiancee was playing Windows 10 edition and everything worked fine!

I feel like I'm in the minority with this but the first thing I did was turn off all the comfort options for VR. Having full character control really doesn't make me feel ill. Played that way for almost 2 hours.

I haven't played Minecraft in years, but for $7 it was too hard to pass up trying in VR.

Tried it last night and lost all concept of time. Went down into a cave, saw a Enderman, freaked the fuck out and started running while he chased me around. Legit got my heart pumping.

Yeah....by far best implementation I've seen on GearVR yet. The fact that Minecraft is such a time sink makes everything else on the store look like a rip off.

I've been playing on peaceful because I get legit shook in regular cinsole/pc play by monsters. In VR I might have a fucking heart attack!

Been playing around with it for a couple days now. Single player is so fun, but multi-player servers are kinda broken right now since most require you to log in using the keyboard but the keyboard doesn't open when connected to a server.

I picked it up a couple days back and dumped an hour or so in. Here's my high speed review:

I don't know how to play Minecraft.

Wandering around was cool, and there's way more going on than the last time I played, but I forgot that I don't know how to, like, make tools. Taking off the Gear VR turns off the game. I couldn't even stop to google it, so I was just stuck wandering. It was really pretty solid, but could use some work on the technical end. Enabling 3D rendering kills the performance, and without it the 3D is just on the shallow side (not bad though).

I'm going to have to have notes ready the next time I play so I can sneak a peak out from under the headset.

I'm starting to think that I'm in the minority with analog movement in VR. It doesn't bother me at all, so long as I'm not turning my head at the same time as the character rotates. I find the snap turning to be incredibly distracting.

Man, I'd love to try this. I gave my sister a GearVR and one of those NES themed controllers with two thumbsticks for Christmas, but I don't think she even uses it.

I was hoping to get my DualShock 4 to work with this but no luck. Anyone?

Could've sworn I saw a youtube video of a guy when I was doing gift research saying he was able to use his DS4 with his Gear VR, but it didn't really work completely correctly, or something like that.
edit: oh, he was able to pair it, but he couldn't get it to really work.

edit2: this guy says when it works (a non-launch version), it works great but that there are so many problems to not go out and actually buy a ds4 for gearvr.
whoops, forgot link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqNwZajMYYw
Could be on a per game basis.

Yeah, I imagine there's truth to that.

Could be on a per game basis. It works on the normal Android OS environment when USB wired but it refuses to pair with my S6 over bluetooth (though it is discovered). I read some guides and one involved Root'ing the phone.

I actually visited a few stores today in hopes of finding an Android gamepad but they didn't have one. HMW, Currys PC World and even an official Samsung store didn't have any.
