Minecraft PS4 out NOW in the EU

I've never played Minecraft and really am not very familiar with it. Can someone explain what exactly it is to me?

Block game with 2 basic modes:
Survival - you need to craft all your material, survive monsters.
Creative - an infinite tub of Legos to have fun with.

Depending on your skill level, you can build this

So wait... This isn't crossbuy with PS4/Vita? I don't understand.

The fuck...

For $25, you will get PS4, [PS3 + Vita cross buy]. Buy the PS3 version first and then the PS4 version.

https://mojang.com/2014/05/minecraft-on-xbox-one-ps4-and-ps-vita-soon/
Minecraft: Playstation 3 + Vita Edition will be available on the PSN in August.
It will include all the features from the most recent Playstation 3 version, including online play on Vita.
This means everyone who has bought Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition from PSN will get it on Vita for free. Those fluent in Sony-speak might refer to the deal as “Cross-buy.”
We are working closely with Sony Computer Entertainment to look into ways to enable upgrade from the Blu-ray disc version of Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition to Minecraft: Playstation 3 and Vita. We’ll have more info on this closer to release.
Minecraft: Playstation 3 + Vita Edition will cost $19.99.
It doesn’t matter if you buy for PS3 or Vita first, you own the game for both platforms.
Saves are transferrable between the Playstation 3 and Vita versions of Minecraft. You will be able to craft at home on your Playstation 3, then continue on the bus/toilet with your Playstation Vita.
All of the DLC you’ve purchased for Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition will work on Playstation 3 + Vita Edition.

Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition will be released on the PSN in August. It brings significantly bigger worlds and a greater draw distance than Playstation 3 + Vita Edition.
It will include all the features from the most recent Playstation 3 version.
Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition will cost $19.99.
If you’ve bought Playstation 3 Edition from the Playstation Network you will be able to upgrade for $4.99.
You will be able to upgrade for a minimum of a year after the release date.

Players with Playstation 3 Edition or Playstation 3 + Vita Edition saves will be able to import their worlds to Playstation 4. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to transfer your saves from Playstation 4 to Playstation 3/Vita. There are technical reasons for this; we can make worlds bigger without too much stress, but shrinking them causes all kinds of problems.
Cross-platform play will not be possible between Playstation 3 + Vita Edition and Playstation 4 Edition.
Many, but not all, of the DLC skins and texture packs you’ve purchased for Playstation 3 Edition will be available for use in Playstation 4 Edition. We’d like to say all your DLC would transfer but some of the items are trapped in licensing deals that are too boring to get into here. We’ll have more on this soon.

This is a masterpiece considering my skill level. Still, i'll give it a try on console; at least it has split screen :D

Australia actually seems to get the cheapest price at $19.75 for full purchase. Not sure on upgrade price as I don't have the PS3 version, but it will probably be the $6.50 tag like EU (converted currency of course).

The map size is huuuuge btw. Of course not a patch on the pc version. But it's massive non the less.

What, it's still not sorta-infinite on consoles? Why? There should be no valid technical reason for that on the PS4 and XBO.

lel it's not because of save files PS3/X360 litterally can't handle a bigger world CPU is to weak.

CPU? Don't think so. The game only generates the area where you currently are, everything else gets thrown away once you get far enough away from it (but your modifications get saved, of course), and then gets generated again when you go back. So CPU power should have very little, if anything, to do with the maximum possible world size. It should really only affect how much of the world you can see at once.

Do a lot of people still play the survival part of the game, or has it been taken over by the creative lab part?

Depends on a player's mood. Most start out with Survival though, since that's what the game's mechanics are built for. Although it's a great building game, the point of building stuff is to survive and thrive.

They said that is down to a Save file limit set by the console makers. I guess since everything is backed up to the cloud now Sony and MS frown on 100mb saves

Makes me wonder what will happen when Fallout 4 is announced since Bethesda RPG's are notorious for gigantic save file sizes.

I'm the Creative Mode guy. I guess being an artist makes me want complete access to stuff to start building rather than playing on Survival and waiting forever grinding. Now, if I have some friends to play with who want to work on a project together through Survival Mode, then I am down for that.

Hmm, yeah, that makes sense I guess. They could still make the map "infinite" though, and instead just put a limit on how much you can modify it (since that's what's actually gets saved). But I suppose that could make the experience worse in some ways.

I wonder when Sony implemented a limit because my Afrika save on the PS3 is ~300MB iirc lol

Is there a video of the last one?

Any 4 player split-screen impressions yet? I hated how the fps and draw distance was halved every time a player joined on the xbox360, so I'm hoping its improved.

I seem to recall they mentioned the draw distance and world size would be significantly improved for PS4. Basically the PC version.

No the way 4J's engin works chunks are unloaded but part of it is still saved for when you come back. Espically for when you have redefine contraptions. Besides even with optimizing it would not hit the world size of next gen versions.

Minecraft can be a lot of things. For some, it's a super-deep technical simulator. For others it's a building block game. For many others its an online competitive or co-op experience. For me it's a free-roaming adventure world where I can create my own stories organically.

Finally! Runs nice and smooth, and for just under £4, I can't complain.

BTW, if you own any of the texture or skin packs on the PS3 version, you can download the PS4 versions for free too. Find them on the add-ons tab on the PS4 version's store page.

buy this game with a UK account and download it on a US console?

You can. But if you want it that badly, I'd say just download the U.K. demo and play around with that, then buy the game when the U.S. version hits hopefully later tonight.

Edit: Just saw post above me. Tomorrow for U.S.

That's good to hear. I can't believe I'm getting excited to play more minecraft. Really looking forward to playing this split-screen this weekend.

Probably midnight tomorrow in the US. :)

I'm bummed I won't be able to share my Vita world with the PS4 version. Wish there was a compromise (smaller world option for PS4).

Blog post is super informative

Minecraft fans! We’re excited to finally tell you that the Minecraft PS4 Edition will be available on PlayStation Store this Thursday before 12pm Pacific for only $19.99!

For those looking for the ultimate Minecraft experience, the PS4 Edition will feature worlds 36 times bigger than the ones you might be used to on the PS3 system. Existing players will be able to import PS3 saves to the PS4 Edition, allowing them to continue work on their immense structure or delve even deeper towards the Nether.

Staying true to our promise, we wanted to make sure that anyone who previously bought the PS3 Edition (Disc or Digital) would be able to upgrade to PS4 Edition for a small fee.

Well, we’re happy to officially announce the upgrade option is available to any existing PS3 Edition owners for just $4.99!

The very first screenshot in op's link shows 4 player split screen.

I saw this:
1 player
Network Players 2-8 - Full game requires PlayStation®Plus membership to access online multiplayer
DUALSHOCK®4 Vibration Function
Remote Play Supported
Cross Platform Features PS4™ - PS Vita
HD Video Output 720p,1080i,1080p

And got confused.

Thanks though.
