Minecraft: Wii U Edition isn’t going to allow you to manage your inventory on the Wii U GamePad from the get-go. This is according to Mojang‘s director of creative communications, Owen Hill, who says the controller’s touch screen can only be used as an alternate screen for those who want to utilize the off-TV play feature.

Wow. What a missed opportunity. It's late enough to the party as it is and it they couldn't take advantage of the gamepad? Not worth the dev time?

That's like the single game mechanic / UI design decision every single person thought of when hearing "Minecraft for WiiU" and yet they somehow managed to miss it. Nice, haha!

What?! That would be one of the biggest selling points, and yet they're not including it? That's just baffling.

What would you do that would make it so amazing? Move things around in your inventory? The crafting system on console is very different to PC so that could be a lot of effort to change. And I don't think just inventory handling would be that amazing on the gamepad, vs the time/money it may take to implement.

Pretty standard 3rd party Wii U port then. Late and nothing to differentiate it in terms of features or price. I wouldn't be surprised if something is missing from it either.

Known already. :p

Could be on an update, same way other stuff will be added later (PR mentioned stuff for Nintendo fans coming later).

Maybe around the retail release, early 2016.

Seems they just wanted this out before Christmas, and the rest of things in 2016.

Heck, it also seems this took the place of Story Mode, which is still TBA and was announced first.

Fuck this shit, I can't defend this peice of shit if they don't even use it, am I supossed to stuff down my ass while playing?

Fuck the Wii U

still the best system this gen
if you own a pc that is
but still, being the golden turd in a contest still means you are a turd

I love minecraft, own it for PC and a bevy of consoles and was pretty excited when the Wii U port was announced as the gamepad could be used for lots of potential but this pretty much kills any reason for me to purchase this version of the game, a shame.

Ok I thought this game was a good idea, and was about to finally jump in and play minecraft after all these years...but no. Seriously? They can take a look at Mario Maker for 2 minutes and see how it should handle...

While you guys are complaining about the inventory management, I just have to say it's remarkable to me how Microsoft is smart enough not to isolate Minecraft on Microsoft platforms. Maybe we should just be thankful that Minecraft is even coming the the Wii U. But yeah, obviously a missed opportunity, but I think they'll eventually fix it.

Man, I was pissed when the Vita version didn't really use the touch screen, but it somehow hurts me more to not have it on Wii U.

What? The ONE thing anyone thinking about the Wii U and Minecraft together and they didn't do it? I wonder just how rushed this port is? I'm still surprised it happened at all after the Microsoft acquisition to be honest.

Using the word "allow" in this context feels so clickbaity. It isn't forbidding you, they just haven't taken the extra time and effort (yet) to create this feature that the series has never had. If the game sells well enough, and its a common request, they're certain to add it. If not, they won't which is perfectly fair.

Using the pad for inventory is a gimmick anyway.

That would be trying to close the barn door has left. Minecraft was already on a lot of platforms when Microsoft bought the property.

"from the get-go?" so is that a feature coming later then?

Assuming they can pull it off without too much trouble Mojang could potentially work to add it given how in demand the feature seems to be.

Not having Minecraft on as many platforms as possiblewould be a waste given the audience.

So close, yet so far. I refuse to believe that no one thought of implementing that, and am just going to assume it's being held back to meet deadlines.

Minecraft U was gonna be my jumping in point. This omission makes it an unfortunate easy pass at launch. Hopefully a patch is coming.

Early amiibo integration could win me back tho.

Pretty much.

Shifting complex menus (especially ones involving dragging things around) to the Gamepad is one of its best features. It's hardly a gimmick.

hey, some features are gonna be left out when a game is rushed out like this. that's just the way it goes.

As someone who has never really understood why people go ga go over using the Gamepad for inventory management, given that it takes considerably more effort to use than just pressing a button to bring it up on the main screen, I can't say I'm in any way broken up about this myself.

But it does seem like the obvious use for the damned tea tray of doom, and ignoring it sucks for those crazy legends that do like using it, especially if they've been putting off playing Minecraft all these years in the hope it came out on the WiiU one day.

Hopefully it gets patched in quickly.
