Mirror's Edge: Catalyst Closed Beta Thread | Didn't Get An Email? Keep Faith

Don't really like it either but isn't she supposed to be younger and more inexperienced, origin story and that.

I don't like this trend lol. They took cool, calm and collected Lara Croft and made her a baby, they did the same thing to Samus and now Faith. She was way more badass in the original game. Hopefully she sees some character development in this one.

I assume we're not going to get to keep our save files, so I'm torn about continuing. Really loving it so far, though.

It's still a tossup for me between PS4 and PC, though. I only have a GTX780...I wonder how that'll compare? Plus, edge to the PC on replays in the future, with a better graphics card...

780's definitely gonna get you better graphics than the PS4 ver. Though you have Nvidia's not so secret planned obsolesence, driver wise.

Edit: Is there a memory leak somewhere? Because after 20 minutes the FPS starts dropping from 55+ to the 40s. Also it's hilarious how much ram they recommend for the game when it doesn't even reach 2.5gB of RAM usage.

Thought this was gonna be a glorified demo, but it really is beta as fuck. Feels seriously unfinished and unpolished, certainly not something that's meant for release in two months, and even less one month from now as was the original plan. I don't buy their "new online technology" excuse at all. It runs horribly on my PC, barely hanging around the 30's, and it looks kinda bad too. Changing settings around doesn't help much or at all. I'm getting pop-up and graphical glitches. The cut-scenes are inexplicably pre-rendered at 20fps (yeah not even 24). I wonder if they're just throwing out there into the wild and cutting their losses.

Honestly, I really don't like any of the changes they've made to the original or what they have introduced here either. I prefer the stage-based time trials of the original, instead of always having arrows telling me where to go. The open world level design is a total mess and now that I've actually played the game I can see why they created the new hand-held runner vision. It's really hard to get around this place and know where to go to get to where you actually want to go. There are ways of making a new ME game, and this really wasn't. The focus on story is just a poor decision, I don't care any of what's going on, Faith's new actor is kinda awful to be honest, and everyone just flat out talks too much. Even aesthetically, I don't like this ultra shiny and soft-look they've gone with compared to the bolder design of the first game. As an OG ME fan, this is a really poor first impression.

I think this is a reductionist view point to take when regarding "strong" female characters. There is much more to strength than acting like the default male VG protagonist.

Well, if we ignore the gender aspect, I wouldn't enjoy playing a bratty dude either. I guess I should be glad we're not playing as Icarus because he's insufferable :P. But really, what would acting like a default female protagonist be? Perhaps that a topic better reserved for its own thread though. I guess this Faith is still badass given that she seems to give zero fucks about risks and just gets the job done. And barely an hour in is hardly the time to judge a character's personality I suppose.

Well we can agree on that. :P

He's like the typical young adult media guy that Stars opposite the female protagonist and it's terrible. :P

This runs fucking flawlessly on my i5/7970 machine which at a mix of high/ultra settings surprised me.

I have a 4670K and a 280X and it runs like shit on my PC.

Yeah I'm all in on this. HEAVY.

This feels like a far more accessible Mirror's Edge than the first. Movement is a lot faster, everything is simpler. The unlock tree seems like it's there to get you to learn the base skills first and then wean you on. Mirror's Edge gave you everything up front, and that was hard.

Graphics are solid. Story is ok, though I do love the City of Glass. Music is -perfect-.

Isn't the name Icarus used in the first game as
the project of people used to take down runners?

Yeah, and there's not a single doubt in my mind that
he's basically bitchy male Celeste with some dumb twist attached :P

Thanks for spoiler-tagging that btw, made me realise I need to edit an older post.

Have you tried classic runner vision or turning it off? Watching this video of runner vision off, doesn't seem that bad to necessitate GPS.

At least this free beta has helped you confirm in not getting the game so that's a silver lining rather than being disappointed in having paid all that money.

And it wouldn't be so bad if
Icarus was likable, and had a sympathetic reason for eventually turning on the runners. But the dude's just a jerk. It's like "hurry up and betray all the runners for scrip or power already."

I... Don't know but it runs like butter.

controller doesn't work on PC though. Is this a frostbite thing because I know DA:I struggled between switching from kb/m to controller too

Played the Xbox One version. Game plays great, that was my main concern. This really does feel like a beta, and there were some issues with some checkpoint not tracking my progression, so I had to reload or kill myself to force a reset of the missions. But overall, I really enjoyed it, its good ol classic ME, but done with better graphics and an open world environment. I could see the open world stuff become boring for me, but it likely gives the game a ton of fun replay-ability, which was one of the big compliant from the first ME. Controls and traversal through the map is quick and fun, I did like the runner's vision a lot, takes me through the game so I can be the runner and not be stuck figuring out where to go. My only concern is the combat, it feels like the game will have a lot more combat from playing this beta. Every mission had guards of some manner and you had to either run past them or fight them, but I found fighting them was necessary in some parts (I might be wrong, didn't try running away). Combat is very awkward, and its hard to dodge enemy attacks sideways (I would always get hit, had to resort to just backing up, and kick em again). Combat was also a pain since guards took like 5-6 hits to down, and if you are fighting two of them, it just sucks up a minute of your run just to have an annoying combat mechanic. I also fear combat will be more prominent since there seem to be a lot of upgrade for combat, which means it might be a common occurrence. All that said, this beta made this a day one buy for me. Loved it, bad combat an all, since the movement, running and open world style they are presenting are all outstanding. Looking forward to June 7.

Is the night cycle locked in this beta?

Also, at the end of the 4 main missions, the game tell us we're at 28% of the story... This can't be true, right? It'd be shorter than ME1...

Got into the Mirror's Edge: Catalyst PS4 Closed BETA!! Literally jumping round the house with joy. I'll be setting my alarm for when it's downloaded as I've been waiting for this game for YEARS that's how much I loved the original :D

So, I like what I've played so far, but that the first thing you do after the tutorial is literally "Collect 3 Xs" doesn't really give me much faith that the game won't be full of useless collectibles and generic side content.

Woohoo, just got a code from Nvidia! I thought I had signed up for the beta a looong time ago, but I wasn't sure about it. Actually, I think maybe this might be from being subscribed to Nvidia's newsletter? Anyway, installing Origin now.

Got into the beta so here's a few thoughts.

1. Origionally I was dreading the changes they were making to the game and wasn't excited at all. I was worried for no reason. The best comparison I can give is the difference between Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. Stylistically Catalyst feels a lot more like a first person platformer/fighter then the origionals focussed speedrun heaven puzzle platformer. The Combat controls are like the platforming controls in the first game. They have a high learning curve, but allow a lot of freedom. When people start to get good, faith is going to look like a character from the raid in YouTube videos. The gameplay also feels a little floaty but overall nothing major has changed.

2. While the skill tree is slightly frustrating it creates a good sense of progression. But experienced players will want to make roll, quick turn and coil their first 3 upgrades. Once you unlock them it really starts to feel like mirrors edge. This game is going to be really fun at high levels once everything is unlocked. Hopefully there is a new game plus mode. Though the story so far is nothing to write home about

3. Icarus is the worst. He's feels like the mirrors edge version of Hayden Christensens Anakin Skywalker in attack of the clones. Hopefully he doesn't feature too prominently since I don't think DICE have enough time to give him a personality transplant

4. The online leaderboards on runs are great. The open world has basically made this the Mario Maker of Mirrors Edge. Lots of replay value

Now one slight complaint.
There should be more controller mapping options. In the first game I played with the jump/coil button on the right as that felt more natural. So far in this demo that controller option isn't availiable. Hopefully dice will patch that in for the retail release

Guards should not be taking 5-6 hits. Should be 2-3 at most if you're using your momentum/traversal attacks. Are people just playing this game wrong?

Miss my old Faithy, but I need to play through Catalyst before passing judgment.

Her old VO is way better.

Yeah been playing with "classic" runner vision.

I hope the final game is a marked improvement, but I'm definitely waiting on impressions and technical analysis.

My controller has been working without any issues (DS3 with a 360 wrapper.) Odd. :P

Got two EU PS4 codes. First one, can't use. Second one, after trying to redeem the first one, can't use. Tried redeeming them on PC, but tells me code is invalid or wrong. Then tried redeeming on console only for it to give me an error.

And here was me excited to play it because at least this could cheer me up after perhaps one of the worst weeks I've had in recent memory.

What is puzzling to me is the preview videos from last week looked absolutely gorgeous, yet the actual beta we got has all sorts of texturing issues. What gives? Were the journalists given a more recent and polished build?

Something doesn't add up...

I guess I'm being overly cynical, but when the game had me pull up a map and the skill tress, I just groaned and decided to play something else. Blerugh.

Runs fine on PS4 so far and it plays great. The only thing that's annoying is the stuttering in some of the cutscenes. Can't wait to play some more tomorrow.

I hate the cutscenes and dialogue. Seems to be unkippable too.

As far as the actual game part, I'm not feeling that either but I can't put my finger on why.
