Mixtape Review Thread (Potential Reddit's Game of The Year)

I can't find anything woke about it. It actually seems kinda nice. Unlike Bloom and Rage it's not trying to hit you over the head with Message, and clearly a lot more sincere love went into this game.
Only thing is it's barely a game.
Who do the devs or publishers know lol. Usually the big sites wouldn't give a game like this the time of day, nevermind making it the top rated game of the year.
Weird, but that's how games journalism works I guess. Hard to be too annoyed at the devs.
Also if it does turn out to be pushing a Message, at least us millenials aren't to blame :pie_relieved:, despite the date this game is clearly really set before my time. Extremely Gen X.

Our inquisitors are overzealous. Overzelly Nellys.

What's crazy to me is this thread has identified a woke artstyle. This game isn't even woke but the artstyle is so engrained in our brains as woke we can't see thru it. Bisexual lighting, meet bisexual artstyle.

🤷‍♂️ can't blame people for noticing patterns and being weary of this shit.

I'm actually interested in the game though.
Who are you kidding? You have a half dozen posts in this thread, not one is actually about the game. And it's the same in every one of these threads. A handful of you come into these threads, get up on your soapbox and wag your fingers at the rest us, pretending to be above it all, but you're literally attracted to them like flies on shit.

The culture war addiction is real.

This is literally you, and it's hilarious you can't see it. You're every bit as addicted, every bit as engaged, and you routinely post every bit as much about this stuff, or more, than any other "culture war" addict on this site.

No one ever said this.

I agree, and more people should play Ball x Pit, 2025 TGA Award Nominee, Balatro, the 2024 TGA GotY Nominee, or Vampire Survivors, 2023 BAFTA winner.

For the past three years they were all the best arcade-like experiences.
To be honest i wasn't thinking about those games at all. Vampire Survivors is not an arcade game and is completely trash in my opinion, i think that's why it got rewards too. But whatever i was just venting about reviewers i won't elaborate any further.

Was there news about the studio being on the verge of closure before this or something?

Reviewers seem to give a little "help" to games from studios like that.

Or maybe it's just that good, but I doubt this is anywhere near Clair Obscur good.

woke or non-woke, this looks like a presumptuous "game" made by someone who smells his own farts

by the looks of the bands and the high reviews, they had a lot of money to spare

I don't really have a problem with the game or the devs, people can make whatever they want I don't care, but yeah 100% about the second part lol. Licensing this much well known music for a 2.5 hour movie game when you're not a well known developer? More importantly for the reviews though, they probably know people.

I do wonder about this game heavily reliance on actual songs, what will happen if the license expires especially when the studio goes down under?

There's a segment in the game where you have to push a shopping cart with your drunk friend in it while being chased by cops. I literally didnt touch the controller.
I just watched the game play the segment by itself and then got a an achievement for not crashing.

Apparently the game doesn't have a 'streamer' mode so it's probably not gonna get a lot of traction on twitch, due to licensing.

Game isn't doing too hot on steam. Hopefully it is making money via gamepass. Seems like the perfect gamepass game for those that subscribe.

If it even has streamer mode, what would be the point of watching when there is barely any gameplay?

I've seen the playthrough and feels like 95% of it is cinematic with 5% walking around finding stuff.

Worst "10" rating since Polygon "10"'s Gone Home.

Oh I don't think that would really matter. Millions of people sat patiently watching thots in bath tubs too, remember?

Just beat it, there is barely any game there.

Story was nice but main protagonist was way too self absorbed for my liking.

7/10.

Some real nice visuals tho.

It's obviously appealing to people who miss their teen years, those who watch Stranger Things, listen to Nirvana and play FF15 "band of brothers". I think most of the reviewers are old enough to have lost a friend whom they have shared time while child or teen by now so it doesn't surprise it resonates with them.

Definitely looks like the awkward coming of age slop redditors would love, and I think this stuff directly speaks to the kind of people who review video games at these sites too.

Hard for me to even trust if people say this is good, because I've heard the same about Life is Strange, and I spent money on those games only to think the stories were self-absorbed cringe trash.

I can't find anything woke about it.

Same. I watched the first 20 min and the last 20 min and skipped around a bit in between and nothing stood out

This. Why bother putting it in game format if you don't use the medium.

The worst part is the story and dialogue seemed weak to me, so I can't fathom why this is well reviewed. It it was a movie or TV show it would have middling reviews.

well, i'm not sure, but then again, it sorta depends on how many times you're thinking you might wanna replay it down the road, eh?...

EDF 6: gameplay focused, has a cool story that takes adventage of the medium it's in to tell it in an inventive way, 7/10.

Mixtape: movie game with gameplay segments to keep you awake, 10/10.

Even during the gameplay segments, it looks like you can simply put the controller down and the game will basically play itself. I was doing the part in the shopping cart and decided to try putting the controller down, and the game kept going without any input from me.

Absolute clown show.

I played it. Visuals and music were great. Really hit me with some nostalgia as well. Gameplay was barely there and it was under three hours. But the price reflects that.

I'm giving it a chance, though. A few of my friends really raving about it, despite our common hate of the recent DotNod games and LiS sequels.

I miss good narrative games with stylized look, could be Dispatch of this year.

Such a shame because I had that same section with my steel series nova pro headset on, volume cranked and I fucking pissed myself all the way through it.

What a funny world where someone can find absolute joy in something someone else thought was really bad.

The news report section had me in tears.

I was high as fuck and it was awesome.

Games fucking bad ass, so far outside of the lead but she could grow on me.

The fact that there's barely any actual gameplay isn't surprsing, but people saying that the game apparently is not heavy with the messaging certainly is a (nice) surprise. I expected some heavy stuff based on how the characters look and who's publishing the game.
