MLB 09 The Show : Worth getting a PS3 over?

You're asking GAF if you should buy a PS3. What do you think the majority of the answers are going to be?

I personally don't think any sports game is worth buying a console for. Sports games aren't enough of a unique experience for me to get excited about, even if they are finely tuned.

If you can afford it, buy it. Sounds like you're interested in enough games for it, plus you're already equipped to use it as a Blu-ray player.

Yes is my answer. I am not even a fan of baseball, but the realism of MLB 09 the Show is second to none. I was blown away by the details and you will too trust me. Then you have a Blu Ray player then you have a whole host of exclusives to choose from. And at this time most 3rd party developers that give a damn make the experience pretty much the same on both 360 and PS3. Great investment

No one game is worth the purchase of a system over I believe. But considering that The Show isn't the only AAA title, go for it. Believe it or not, there is a hell of a library on the PS3, and this year has a killer line up going for it as well. Plus, there's always the luxury of Blu-Ray movies as well. I still say it's the best value out there for an entertainment device.

I'm not usually a fan of sports games, but I thought MLB 08: The Show was very well done. But the people saying it's not worth purchasing for a single game are correct. It's $400--you want to get your money's worth out of it.

Why the hell don't people make tons of gifs of this game? It's fucking amazing to look at.
Because in Gif form you wouldn't be able to tell the difference from that and real footage?

I can't vouch for 09 yet, simply haven't had the time to play, but 08 never once got old, wether you have a franchise going or RTTS. The game is incredible.

wow i'm tempted to get this and I don't even understand baseball, looks amazing though and if there is a decent sports video game underneath there then this must be quite something.

how do the controls work for batting? Is it hard to learn? Will having only the most basic knowledge of baseball stop me from enjoying this game?

(is it out / will it come out in the uk?)

It's worth it, especially if the idea of BluRay intrigues you. I have more games for my 360, but I use my PS3 more. PSN games really deliver on PS3 as well. Sony has really been on top of the downloadable game space IMO, and not having to deal in space bucks makes me buy more stuff. Outside of buying codes for the 360 I've only bought one XBLA game using space bucks (Braid) and I have 56 disk based 360 games. I have about 16 PSN games. It's not that there aren't XBLA games on the 360 I want, it's just that I don't want to mess with space bucks. I know, it's not that hard, but still, if I want to buy a game I should not have to buy more points than I need, or go to some special (zune) website to get the desired number of bucks, and then break out my conversion table. No. I want AstroTripper, here's five bucks, charge my card you have on file. Done.

If you're going to buy a console for a baseball game, it should be the PS3 and MLB 09

... but if you don't really like sports games, there's not much sense in buying a console for one, even one that you really like.

You have 56 disc based games and you've only played 11?

Batting on the easiest difficulty is strictly timing based (if its a strike and you time it right, you hit it hard). Above that incorporates something they call 'plate coverage', which is basically aiming the bat through the zone with the left stick + timing. The higher the difficulty level, the more accurate your plate coverage needs to be. Its relatively hard, depending on your hand/eye ability and knowledge of baseball.

Give the demo a run and see what you think. If anything I think it can be an excellent tool to learn more about the sport, but it might be frustrating at first. Ive been involved with baseball all my life and the game kicks my ass plenty. But thats the sign of a good sim.

As for the original post, if this is the only game you think you'll play on the system I'd say no. Then again there seems to be a fair share of people who say The Show is the only thing they play on the console (see OS forum). Personally that makes me think they don't like games very much. ;)
