I don't know why Machado would go to the White Sox. I'm not too familiar with their farm system but they have to be at least 2 maybe 3 years away from returning to contention.

Lots of rumblings about Harper and the Giants too. Might be something happening soon.

The White Sox have been stockpiling prospects ever since the Chris Sale trade - they’re probably looking at contending around 2020-2021, but the future is bright with their investments beginning to pay off. I could see Machado being interested in the potential for sustained success.

Not to mention their division is weak. Cleveland sees its window closing.

But you got to remember Detroit and also KC are rebuilding. I don't think Minnesota's rebuild is going to shake out, no one really reached their potential.

Cleveland has definitely blown their chance but I don't think it will be a runaway for the Sox atm.

Busy day for catchers in California. Nick Hundley has signed with the Oakland Athletics and Stephen Vogt has signed with the San Francisco Giants.

Also, A. J. Ellis has reportedly joined the Padres front office so it looks like he has called it a career.

I don’t understand the ‘collusion’ calls from the players. Every time a 10 year mega contract has been signed in the last 20 years the team has eventually regretted it. Now that they don’t want to put that much payroll into one person it’s collusion?

You can either claim collusion or realize it's a hard sell to pay exorbitant figures for a player over a decade or whatever in a sport that's traditionally tough on players past a certain age. The season is overlong and there's a lot of traveling and 10 years and hundreds of millions of dollars is not a smart bet.

An aspect of baseball I don't understand is the mentality a player won't negotiate a contract during the season. This seems passive-aggressive. A player doesn't negotiate anything -- he has an agent to handle the business part of the job.

I'd like to know when having someone negotiate on my behalf became a distraction. As a player, I'd love to know a team is working hard year-round to ensure my contract is extended.

Yep, it's not only a bad move in terms of likely production over the duration of the full contract, but you're putting yourself in a position where you have to fill out the rest of your roster with limited flexibility. Playing too much OOTP has made me ultra frugal. :p

Just an aside, it would be interesting if the league (any sports league) was run on a production basis, with salary numbers paid in the end based off a chart relative to performance. I know the idea is full of problems, but It'd be fun to see for a while.

This is amusing:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/yoenis-c...83y92qOnwrJk-rBcq77tBMgB4NMJoLBGlS9FVSRIZmV4s

Yoenis Cespedes of the New York Mess is not in baseball shape. He's getting flak for it.

(I can't imagine the guy will play in 2019, so it really doesn't matter. But some of the Twitter quotes are great, and the line about the horse made me laugh out loud.)

EDIT: Oh, duh, the article also Twitter quoted a friend of mine, which is another reason I posted this.

I wish I was more excited for this season. I've been a Braves fan for a very long time. This off-season is killing the momentum and enthusiasm from last season.

Nah don’t worry.

Everyone is waiting on Harper. Once that drops, players and teams will know where market value is. I’d be excited for a year of Donaldson at 3B

We are going to see. After that interview with Terry McGuirk and Alex Anthopolous, Braves country is burning. They may make another acquisition, though. Till then, things aren't happy in Atlanta.

I heard about that.

But to be fair, you have a 1/3 Of the teams not trying to win, a 1/3 with payrolls near luxury tax, and a 1/3 trying to not make poor choices a top priority. I believe the Braves is that last 1/3.

I don't believe any of the Harper speculation. Reporters have been saying conflicting crap every other day, maybe Boras leaking fake news. Anyway it's getting tiresome and I hope this shit will be over sometime this week.

Make no mistake, Boras leaked the Nationals 10 year/ 300 million offer... and it back fired.

If you are turning that down, no team that can match or exceed that will even call you.

Payroll is currently in the bottom 3rd.

But hey, revenue increased by 126 million last year. Business must be nice at the Battery! Goooo profits!

Yeah... something needs to change ASAP.

Right now it doesn't seem to be a how much a year thing, but that teams don't want to give long guarantee contracts to players. Donaldson accepting 1 year will be a blessing.

I think if Machado was willing to accept 2 years $80 million or 3 years $120 Million, teams like Atlanta would have bite. But 8-10 years... scared most off.

That's exactly it. I think most teams would be in on a 3, 4, or even 5 year deal. It's years 6-10 that teams want an opt-out for. Of course, if you're a baseball player, your first 6 years are already at a steep discount. Change will have to come sooner than later now that players aren't seemingly peaking in their 30's thanks to PED's.

I honestly think there should be a penalty for teams not spending.

As an example if you don’t spend more than $120 million, you don’t qualify for picks 1-10 of each round. So the worst record team can only at max get the 11th pick each round if they didn’t spend the required money.

Yeah, I feel that's a good idea. I actually don't think teams/owners are really all that concerned about draft position as much as they are about having a draft pick.

I think they need to get rid of revenue sharing since that's evidently just getting pocketed by uncompetitive teams. As for teams who are failing to spend, if they didn't meet a threshold for spending then fine them like a substantial amount per million shy. What's the worst they could do, spend even less? Fine even more.

Of course, MLB owners would never go for that. If/when the players decide to strike, I'm fully supportive.

Good points.

Unrelated, I think they need to do away with the Blackouts for broadcasts.

I think Murray is insane to pick football over baseball.

I think he’s too short and too inaccurate to make it in the NFL. He might land in the CFL, XFL or AAF at some point.

Unless he folds relatively quickly and goes back to baseball.

Bochy is a first ballot HOF and one of the best. I'll miss that guy a lot. Watching the Giants over the years he's pulled some pretty smart managerial moves that you'll never see on sportscentre, but when an opposing manager falls into one of his traps it's glorious.

Can't complain about the 3 championships but it really sucks to see the decade end this way.

Looking at that makes me wonder if the Tigers could be one of those mystery teams we keep hearing about. They're rebuilding but so are the white Sox and to a lesser extent Phillies and Padres (who are supposedly ready to return to contention but those prospects have to pan out first.)

Detroit has never been afraid to give out mega contracts, although maybe things are different since Illitch passed.

There certainly is something wrong right now

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/02/reds-sign-derek-dietrich.html

Dietrich isn't a great player. Good veteran tho. Hit .260 in a division that had good Starting Pitching last year. Had to settle for a minor league deal with an invite to spring training? Bullshit
