Modnation beta thread of low framerate awesomeness

HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT.

My jaw is on the floor. I have not even raced yet, nor fooled around with that track editor...but you could get lost for HOURS just on character/kart creation alone! And I am already floored by some of the stuff that people have made, with the few items that are available.

Yes, as others have said, I have already noticed framerate issues just driving around the main courtyard, but that is not something that will be in the final retail version...it just can't.

All I have to say is, this game has EPIC potential.

Damn, now they don't have codes anymore....obviously some people got way more than 1. Annoying. I tried all the time. If anyone can send me one I would be grateful. Thanks!

Now that I think about it - THE LOAD TIMES FOR THE MENUS ARE LONGER THAN THOSE FOR THE LEVELS

THIS IS INEXCUSABLE UNITED FRONT GAMES, DO YOU HEAR ME?

Well now that Gamespot is out that leaves the PlayStation Blog making an 'announcement' relating to the beta sometime today and some 'special offer' in the PS Home Theater.

Has anyone checked the PS Home Theater to see if this special announcement is happening or what it is?

lol wow. I gave the link to the gamespot page 5 minutes before the countdown ended, he got the code, while I didn't, and he gave his to me cuz he didn't want it D:

Jeez. Stupid gamespot.

One question though: can this be account shared? As in people in a different playstation can log in to my account and download/play the beta? Or is it like Uncharted 2 beta? that when you used the beta in one system there was a 24 hour delay in any other system with the same beta before it could be used

Created my first track with the editor, it's called 'Mountainside Climb' and can be found under my PSN username 'Bootaaay' - I was really impressed with how easy it was to create a twisting, complicated track. I'd brought the elevation up really high and was expecting to be unable to join the track together, but the editor seems to fully accommodate all manner of crazy designs. Here's a few shots;

Already shared the beta with a friend of mine and we were both playing online at the same time.

Betas are not to test performance, it to test content, network, etc. Performance is the last step, the content has to be complete first. Concentrate on the game, not the frame rate, they don't need feedback on the obvious.

So, this beta.

Where do we go to report bugs/suggestions/etc?

Part of the benefit of getting early access to the game is being able to share your opinions on the game thus far and help it improve! To share your thoughts with the ModNation Racers team, follow these instructions to access the Online Beta forums and reporting tools after you've installed and played the Beta:

Step 1: Visit: http://www.us.playstation.com/
Step 2: If you have not logged in already, please enter your PlayStation Network sign-in ID and password.
Step 3: In the header, you will find a "BETA" button. Click on this to enter the beta section.
Step 4: Read the "Beta Test Program Participation Agreement" and then click "Continue" to accept the agreement and be taken to the ModNation Racers Online Beta homepage
Step 5: Click on the "Message Board" link on the left menu to be taken to the forums and share your experiences, thoughts, and ideas!
Step 6: Click on the "Post a Bug" link on the left menu to report any bugs or problems you may experience with the beta. Every bit helps, so please let us know!

I just wanted to add, when I first went to the site, I was already logged in and I clicked the beta button (I was in the MAG beta) and it said I was not currently in a beta. I logged out and then back in, and I was able to see the board.

If you are having this issue, try that.

Inconsequential. I did not notice any drops in framerate, but I am rarely bothered by that
Sorry, the framerate is awful while racing. It will mar the experience for anyone who cares the slightest bit about smoothness in a racing game. It felt like it was running sub-30. Or at least it was really erratic. I'm sure it won't ship in this state, but now I'm somewhat concerned they're not aiming for 60fps.

The load times are insanely long right now. I can't imagine they'll ship the game like this, and I know it's a beta, but as it is I can't see myself playing much more unless they patch it. I skipped the opening FMVs and was sitting there for literally minutes waiting for the game to load. And then there are lengthy loads for just about every menu. I know, beta, but this is the roughest console beta I think I've ever played, optimization-wise.

Online racing didn't work for me. Whenever I tried to join a race it would be me and a whole group of folks sitting in the lobby and the race would never start. They'd all start dropping, so I dropped too, and after returning to the hub world I was disconnected from the offline and unable to reconnect. This happened every time, so I guess it's a bug.

The creation options are really cool though too many of them are locked from the start. I'm guessing they're unlocked by leveling up? That's awful if so. Seriously, fuck leveling up and RPG ELEMENTS! in non-RPGs. Give me all the goods from the get-go.

I really did not like the feel of the karts. There was no resistance, it was like driving a cardboard box with some Funslides taped to the bottom of it. Going off road doesn't seem to punish you enough, or at all. Also the camera sucks, as everyone's said. And why are the controls all analog? This is a kart game for crying out loud. Lemme use the face buttons. And the dpad. Map the taunts to the right stick if you gotta include them.

I'll give the online another shot later tonight and then head over to the official boards to leave some feedback. I usually don't bother leaving feedback on betas since I rarely encounter bugs and most console betas are just time-limited demos, but I want this game to turn out good and it seems like they may actually be listening to player feedback. I hope they are least!

Nonsense. Everyone should demand the game ships at 60fps. 30fps isn't acceptable for a kart racer. There's nothing wrong with making that known in addition to raising other criticisms.

But still, I don't understand how you can't have a solid frame rate with graphics like these, even in the beta. I mean, Gripshift looks comparable, was release years ago and run at a rock solid 60fps.

Gripshift had considerably simpler environments, as I remember it. Not that I don't agree that this game shouldn't be locked at around 60fps, but I can certainly see why it may be more complicated.

Also, I don't think we know the size of the team, and it could just be a resource issue.

Beta's are not optimized.
Beta's are not demo's.
Beta's are not feature complete.
Beta's are not final products.

Everything you harped about pertains to final products, not beta's. Some beta's improve on their journey to retail release, some do not. All beta's, however, generally have serious issue and / or problems when they are released.

I don't get how the framerate is so bad when what they showed at E3 looked so polished and smooth, yet that was like 6 months ago.

Beta is shareable? GAF Dummyaccount, please!!

This please.

Also, how does the editor handle tunnels, crossovers and over under type figure 8's and such? Also, any way to do barrel roll tracks or vertical loop tracks?

I had the same prob. logging out and back in worked for me as well.

Nonsense. If you give official beta feedback, telling them the frame rate is poor is useless, they know this. They can profile their own game. They want to know about bugs, glitches, online issues, etc. Don't waste their time with 60fps shit.

Still no code from Gamespot? If so please let me know.

They ran out or their site was glitched. It kept reloading to the same page over and over. Do you have any extras? I would appreciate one.

My first Mod:
nb3p4x.jpg

Impressions:
- Character, Track, and Vehicle Creation is excellent. Seems like there's plenty of unlockables. Even the base amount is a good starting point. I could see myself playing with this part for hours.
- Framerate is bad. Lots of technical issues pop up when racing. It also seemed like the first track (the farm) had a better framerate than the second one.
- I also noticed that if you drive in the road on that track, the screen shakes (to simulate the road texture), but it's not easy on the eyes.
- Kart gameplay seems pretty solid.
- Load times are horrible.
- Usual beta issues are here: disconnects, crashes, etc. Not going to worry about these since it's just a beta.

Wow, the pre game lobby is SMOOTH.

Being able to talk with other people is great.

Havent played a game yet though. Keep losing connection.

Lol

You can't type "hello" in the chat. Gets censored to ****o.

Yeah that's a known bug that must have not been able to been fixed for beta. There's a ton of things that get censored when they shouldn't. For example try describing your kart as "sassy" when you upload it. You'll get "s***y."

OK, first off I'm going to provide you with a helpful link: http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Apostrophes Please read it before making any more internet posts, OK?

And secondly yeah, I think I said "I know it's a beta" repeatedly. Along with "I'm sure it will be improved" and "I hope it turns out to be a good game". I was fully aware I was offering impressions of a beta product, and I'll post similar comments on their message board later because it's a beta and user criticism can lead to better product. Even if they are already aware of these issues letting them know isn't going to hurt.

I really gotta start putting everyone with a Drake, Helghast or Solid Snake avatar on ignore. You people are fucking nuts.

Yeah, I'm sure beta testers slipping "60 fps or bust" into their reports is going to eat up a ton of dev time.

If you have a link to an interview where the devs state that the game will be 60fps hook me up. Otherwise I don't see why you'd assume the game's going to be 60fps. Plenty of racers this gen have shipped at 30.

I still cant get a handle on drifting. I'll try, but then my kart slams in a wall. Definitely different from Mario Kart drifting.

Seems the site is having issues. Just reloads the registration page. I'm most likely LATE. Must be out of codes. Anyone got a spare they'd be willing to off? I'd be grateful!
