Monitoring the situation in Iran

Strait-of-Trump.jpeg
I am not anti-Trump but some of this stuff is too much. Come on Mr. President there are real men and women putting their lives on the line under your command.

I'm same as you, i'm not anti-Trump, i actually quite liked him in his first term and at the start of this one, but this Iran shit is just crazy. Not helped that he's surrounded by fucking meat heads, Pete Hegseth is a complete moron, his press conferences are the ramblings of some kids who likes to play Army. It's almost comical if it wernt real lifes being impacted by the incompetence.

It's so evident that there is no plan to any of this, Trump backs down on his threats all the fucking time.

I'd rather he blow the shit out of Iran, just fucking do it instead of bailing out all the time, TACO TACO TACO is so accurate.

As of right now, he's standing on the neck of the world economy. For whos benefit? What are the long term plans to warrent the current problems?

Iran ain't backing down, they won't surrender.

Japan in WW2 wouldnt have surrendered, their population followed and obeyed their Emperors like they were gods, the population would die for them.

Same shit in Iran, a huge part of the population are willing to die to protect the regime, they view it as their god given duty to be martyrs. The only way Trump wins is completely decimating Iran, which ain't gonna happen. TACO.

Iran war not a war.

I have heard that before. :messenger_dizzy:

In this case, its actually appropriate though. Because there isn't much in the way of direct hostilities.

C'mon, while it is an easy criticism the situations are almost completely opposite. The Russian goal was to annex and occupy Ukraine, it was about territorial gain. Which is why they quickly resorted to mass conscription and sending soldiers to the front-lines, whereas with this operation the US has gone to extreme lengths to minimize losses to their servicemen.

Its also worth mentioning that while the US/Israeli action may have provoked the Iranians into closing the strait, its something that was always in their power should they have deemed it necessary in the event of war. And lets face facts, the IRGC have never been about increasing peace and stability in their sphere of influence!

To me its just shown how perilously dependent we've allowed ourselves to become on staying in the good graces of one of the most unhinged regimes on the planet.

Seriously, given Iranian foreign policy has been based for years on empowering fanatical Islamist groups to act as proxies for their interests, are you really confident that even if Iran itself wouldn't openly deploy nuclear weapons they wouldn't grant one of those groups the ultimate martyrdom weapon ?

Take notes everyone! THIS is masterful diplomacy.

On another note, I think Trump is a freakin' genius. He once said, he doesn't believe in democracy. He's doing gods work, because by acting like an insane, narcissist, senile, sociopathic asshole, he totally proves his point: If a pathetic (though very dangerous) wanna-be dictator ike him can be elected by millions of people legally, then there must be something wrong with democracy, don't you think?
Only a genius could pass this test three times. Person, woman, man, camera, tv

George Washington to Henry Knox, 1 April 1789

To Henry Knox

Mount Vernon April 1st 1789

My dear Sir,
The Mail of the 30th brought me your favor of the 23d—For which, & the regular information you have had the goodness to transmit of the state of things in New York, I feel myself very much obliged, and thank you accordingly.

I feel for those Members of the new Congress, who, hitherto, have given an unavailing attendance at the theatre of business. For myself, the delay may be compared to a reprieve; for in confidence I can assure you—with the world it would obtain little credit—that my movements to the chair of Government will be accompanied with feelings not unlike those of a culprit who is going to the place of his execution: so unwilling am I, in the evening of a life nearly consumed in public cares, to quit a peaceful abode for an Ocean of difficulties, without that competency of political skill—abilities & inclination which is necessary to manage the helm. I am sensible, that I am embarking the voice of my Countrymen1 and a good name of my own, on this voyage, but what returns will be made for them—Heaven alone can foretell. Integrity & firmness is all I can promise—these, be the voyage long or short; never shall forsake me although I may be deserted by all men. For of the consolations which are to be derived from these (under any circumstances) the world cannot deprive me. With best wishes for Mrs Knox, & sincere friendship for yourself—I remain Your affectionate

I miss the days when I thought that the role of the POTUS (or any other head of nation for that matter) was one of honour and duty. Sadly people in power like George Washington are few and far between in history.

It's a saying as old as time; the best leaders are usually the ones that are forced in to their position and didn't want it to begin with. Those that actively seek power usually do it under the guise of the betterment of everyone, but is usually only for their own personal benefit.

Em dash? Sad to see the POTUS was using AI even in 1789.

20 cent jump over night for gas here in CFL.

4.19->4.39

Well on our way to break the June 22 record.

Our debt now exceeds our GDP.

This Is Fine GIF

Dumbest fucking timeline.
We jumped from $3.50ish in northern indiana from the end of last week to $5 nearly everywhere a couple days ago.

...oh, that's right. Another refinery accidently went down at the worst possible time, again.

Oh lawd I would fail that 5 min recall on the memory test for sure lol.

I've never remembered a name in my life after an introductory handshake.

Im officially cognitively impaired, my wife's suspicions are confirmed.

I have the same problem with names lol.

But for numbers, I'm much better for some reason.

For the first time since i moved to Ohio in 2007, gas is now $5. It didnt even hit $4 during covid and the shipping crisis. Ohio is just cheaper in general.

It was at $3.50 through out the war briefly hitting $4 a couple of weeks ago when i last filled it. As of last night, it's now $5. In Ohio. I cant even imagine what other more expensive states are going through.

This is so retarded. And this morning he announced that we are now adding another 25% in tarriffs on auto imports from the EU because they didnt support us in the war. What are we doing here? This is hurting everyday americans. Our job market has collapsed. Groceries are more expensive than ever. Fucking 12 pack of coke was $14 at kroger this week. i bought kroger's generic brand instead. i looked this up, ten years ago, that 12 pack of coke was $4.50. 30% unemployment rate for recent graduates. Layoffs everywhere. Housing market is in complete shambles. And we cant figure out how to get out of this war.

Five fucking dollars. Literally double what i was paying a few months ago.

This is creating problems world wide (massive problems in Asia). I don't see anyone benefiting from this war other than Israel and maybe Russia (selling oil for the higher price and some sanctions lifted - but Ukrainians are destroying their oil infrastructure in the meantime).

And maybe even Israel is not benefiting that much (so far) because Iran is still controlled by the same regime, so objectives were clearly not met.

Same. It'll be 5 years soon since I moved to Ohio from Illinois. Gas prices this past week remind of Chicago's from back then!

Several oil and gas companies have been posting their quarterly results and they are very good.
For example, GALP, here in Portugal just posted a 41% increase in profits, compared to the same quarter in 2025.
BP posted a 3.4B loss in the previous quarter. But for this quarter, they posted a profit of 3.8B.
And you can be sure that weapon manufacturers will also see increased profits, as this war keeps going on.

Don't wanna shill Tesla too much, but I'm seeing the power of it during this crisis. So many people around me complaining about gas, monitoring distance now. Tesla has kept me insulated (didn't drive the truck at all past few months)

I think gulf countries must be concerned this could lead to permanent demand destruction

Multiple twitter channels reporting this.

Does this mean we can finally open this fucking strait?

Seems to mean he doesn't want to let the Congress have a say in it. Same with Russia is a special military operation etc. I mean i hope they manage to get to an actual peace but at this point it seems doubtful.

Nope, this is an Obama/Libya situation with regard to the War Powers Resolution as mentioned in the third X post. He's arguably meeting the letter of the law, i.e. the 60-day-limit clock restarts at day 0 when he resumes.

Trump leaving would be a complete capitulation and make him look weak. The blockade remains and he will take military action.

In Indiana, Private Equity Firms have taken over Electricity companies. People are reporting monthly electric bills of $600-800. Some lady said her bill was more than her mortgage. Probably because she had an electric car.

Electric cars are a good investment, but with AI datacenters being built everywhere raising electricity prices in nearby towns, and private equity firms min maxing public utilities, dont bet on electric cars being the answer.

Just chiming in as another Ohioan. I don't even hate Trump. Don't particularly like him. But don't hate him. This Iran and tariff stuff is fucking ridiculous. I also remember $4.50 12 packs of soda that is now $12 or more. I'll never vote for a Democrat, but I certainly won't vote for Republicans or Trump either. Apologies for the political comment. This situation with Iran is just nonsensical.

Yeah it's hard to see the "terminated" lingo as anything other than Trump's latest (successful) flaunting or outright ignoring of what we thought were rules that the executive branch had to play by. I would lean towards the reporting that said Israel was ready to get back to business and the US is going along.

Looking forward, it'll be interesting whenever the next Democrat is in office to see if they try to revert back to the old feeble "Oooh I can't even wipe my ass without congressional approval" routine after Trump spent 8 years doing whatever he wanted and only occasionally getting his hand slapped by the Supreme Court.

I've been saying for a long time that government positions should be like jury duty for the most brilliant/productive/innovative/educated members of our society. The mere trait of desiring power is, in my opinion, proof of one's lack of fitness for it.

The only people fit to wield power are those that realize that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The only people fit to wield power are those that realize that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
You're pretty much hitting the nail, but I find this quote to be more accurate:

"We're taught Lord Acton's axiom: all power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I believed that when I started these books, but I don't believe it's always true any more. Power doesn't always corrupt. Power can cleanse. What I believe is always true about power is that power always reveals." - Robert Caro

This is ultimately why a person's character is one of the most important traits to consider if you have the opportunity to elect a leader. More importantly, it's critical to observe and review what they've actually done, instead of merely what they say. This isn't a dig at Trump either, this applies to all of our elected officials, would-be or otherwise.

The motive is another layer. Sometimes folks who don't want anything to do with politics step up to the plate because existing leadership has failed. Congress is filled to the brim with sorry sacks of shit, most of them sticking to their respective herd and regurgitating the message of the moment because securing their own power is more important than genuine representation, and if they don't follow one of the two herds, they'll likely be culled.
