Monster Hunter 4 New Info (April 11th 2013)

I'm so happy that MHUltimate is in my Wii U, so I can wait a little bit longer for this to come west side.

That's because Velocipreys return in this one.
This is Velociprey territory, son.

Hahaha, too bad your joke kinda doesn't work since both Great Jaggis, Jaggis, and Jaggias are back. :p

Those locales look freaking beautiful. Definitely picking this up if it ever gets a console release. The 3DS version... eh. It looks functional. But I have zero interest in playing these games for hundreds of hours on a 3DS screen at those resolutions.

Not looking forward to killing another billion Khezus after all those Baleful Gigginoxes I just slaughtered in 3U.

Nope, but this has a better chance of coming due to the fact online is there from the start.

I just don't want to have to deal with another absurd MH drought like we just went through.

At the risk of sounding like an abused spouse, Sven's tone implied that was a major screwup and won't be happening again. I don't think MH3U is doing poorly either, at least based on the reports of it selling out. They probably didn't ship much to begin with of course.

Thread title edit seems appropriate. Had no idea we got new screens.
Areas look very cool.

EDIT: Appears to be a tonne of info/screens on new monsters on the site too.

Well with the reports of it being hard to find, I imagine that it certainly eceeded Capgod's and Nintendo's expectations. I think MH4 will come out.

We will have an answer next Thursday. (NPD)

cool. i did my part with both versions.

i never really got into Unite or tri when i had them before. but i play this one like crazy, system transfer is a godsend. even with my really busy schedule i've still managed to put around 40 hours into it. for someone who rarely plays games anymore, this series now means a lot to me.

More information from aevanko off of twitter (his translation, not mine, but it has A LOT of detail not in the OP)

Charge Axe: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rjms5n

About the Charge Axe in MH4.

So in today's Famitsu then fully explained the new weapon, the Charge Axe. Similar to the Switch Axe, it has two modes: sword and axe.

Sword mode shares many of the same basic moves as SNS so they stated that you could approach it in much the same way. It also has a charge combo where you pause for a second to gather strength, then do a two-hit combo that does not only a lot of damage, but charges your axe more than normal attacks do. Instead of rolling around like SNS, after each attack you can do a side step, similar to Switch Axe and Lance.

On the top left of the screen are 5 bins (like a gunner) that are empty. As you attack with the sword, you will gather energy and eventually the bins will glow yellow. If you use your charge-up move at that point, 3 bins will fill up, or you can keep on attacking and the bins will glow red. At this point you need to charge them up (will charge all 5 bins). If you do not, you will overheat and all your attacks will bounce off the monsters. Likewise, if you charge-up and have no energy built up (oops!) then you will be left open for quite some time as your hunter pays for his mistake.

During attacks you can switch over to Axe mode.

In Axe mode, it plays out similar to the Axe mode in Switch Axe, but the movement speed is slow. This is really a finisher, big one-hit mode. You have an upward swing that goes way up (maybe to hit monsters on terrain above you?), and a downward strike. The big thing is the elemental discharge. Similar to Switch AxeÂ’s sword mode, you can unleash a powerful attack, only this time it uses the bins that you charged up. The effect of the elemental discharge depends on the weaponÂ’s bin type. In the magazine they introduced two: the KO bin and Elemental bin. The KO has more knockout power than a hammer. The elemental one just does massive elemental damage along with the physical damage. If you have enough energy to do the elemental discharge combo, it will end in an uber powerful finisher. After you do the crazy ass finisher, you will switch automatically back into sword mode.

ThatÂ’s it! The reach on the sword is a little longer than SNS and the shield appears to be stronger. My assumption is they will balance the SNS with this by making the SNS more powerful elemental-wise. Time will tell.

Garara Ajara: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rjmsb2

About the new snake monster, Garara Ajara.

In today’s Famitsu they introduced the new snake monster Garara Ajara. The nickname is something like the ‘constricting snake wyvern’. It looks like a snake, but has short legs to move around with (think Lagicrus Sub).

GararaÂ’s main thing is that it will circle the hunter and then constrict up like a boa constrictor, so I guess you need to make sure itÂ’s not circling you and if it is, get the hell out of there. They do hint that although there appears to be no way out once it circles you that there is. My assumption is you can attack itÂ’s neck/chest so that it frees up.

It can also go into the ground and pop up and snap at you. It uses itÂ’s long tail like a whip to perform a single, powerful attack that has long reach.

The other main feature is that Garara has nerve poison in its teeth. If it snaps at you with them and lands a hit, you will instantly be paralyzed. At this point it will follow up and attack you.

The final cool thing about Garara is that it has hard scales that go up its body. Like a rattlesnake, it will vibrate them and send out a loud sound (shockwave) that will cause your hunter to crouch and hold their ears (like a scream), leaving you open to an attack. At times it will shoot off one of its scales, which will fly off and become planted into the ground. What this does is increase the range of the sound wave when it decides to use that attack.

That’s it! So we get a rattlesnake-like monster to deal with—fun! Can’t wait to cut its tail off!

Man I haven't even gotten around to figuring out SA yet, and this thing sounds even more complicated. When are we getting GUNFISTS? I've been asking for years!

Sound attacks that aren't roars are interesting, always made me laugh seeing Congalala's 'roar'. Roars aren't as annoying in 3rd gen either since they are shorter and therefore easier to roll through with evade+1, which makes you feel like a badass.

I hate burrowers though.

I think those settings look gorgeous. cant wait to hunt in the new environments, as much as I love mh3 ones I want a change of scenery.

The issue also introduces a new insect-type monster, called Kunchuu. These insects will be a little tougher to handle than your regular Altaroths, as they tend to attack in groups and will roll themselves into balls to fend off hunters.
Eeeeww. I already hate Altaroths. :(

I just love the visual style. Haters be damned. Yes the ground textures aren't much to write home about, but the charm and creative design of the locales is just mesmerizing to me.

Hopefully we'll get this here in Europe in a timely fashion. Please Capcom. Make it happen.

The 3DS hate in this thread is strong. It's funny how Japan and the West differ here. The former vastly prefers handheld versions, whereas the later seems to want the console ones.

it would be smart to have both I don't think the west is heavily pro 3DS as people would like

I own one and every game it gets makes me wish that game had a Wii U version I mean Wii U has 2 screens :P

MH3U just looks so much better. The clean 1080p look is just great. Als having it on the big screen makes the art design stand out more. I'll buy a 3DS for MH4 if I mus but having it on the Wii U would definitely be preferable for me.

I got no problems if they have proper online support out of the box. Even better if they use the mic and have voice chat built in.

I can sort of see a 3DS MH4, and a 3DS/WiiU MH4G.

That's just crazy talk.

You will definitely get your Wii U port -- one day. Until then, the 3DS will suffice. And, yes, 3U looks better on the Wii U, but it's still a great looking 3DS game.

I love Monster Hunter and the variety of weapons of it but there is one thing that is bugging me, and most probaly many other people aswell.
The lack of Gunner/Archer Weapons! There are only 3 of them, compared to the 10 of the Swordmaster.

I want to see something like Throwing Knifes, Bombs/Grenades/Mines or even more a huge ass Boomerang or a Blowgun with a lot of different darts, please Capcom! Give me some more Long Ranged Weapon instead another Axe/Sword Combination!

I want my huge ass Boomerang..
