Monster Hunter Tri - No fee for western gamers (Possible Wii Speak functionality)

That's good news.

Not that I'm particularly interested in online play, but I heard some (many?) quests are only doable when several players get together.

I am pumped.

Haven't ever played a game in the series, but from the videos, it looks like the slow, grindy RPG I'd love to wither away on. Plus, Dinosaurs.

You'd better play before buying. I wouldn't call MH "slow".

Most people see the videos and think of a Phantasy Star Online with a bit more of strategy and slower weapons, when it is actually A LOT faster and with tons more strategy. You must remember the patters and have fast reaction, all while setting traps and thinking the best way to deal the most damage possible and dodging the most effective way; all while managing camera and inventory real time.

It is a great deal "grindy", and it is extremely addictive. But it is really "love it or hate it": you either fall in love with the above average difficulty (in sp, at least - never played mp), intense action, pattern-recognition hunts, multiple weapon choices, slow grinding nature, "heavy" controls, and believable animations or you hate it for being too hard sometimes, too much focus on multiplayer, relying on pattern recognition, throwing you into the wild with several weapon choices but making you have to craft/buy each one of them to test which fits your style (at least it is like that on MH1), not giving you help with the materials to build items almost essential to beating some monsters, the completely free camera which you have to babysit, and the slow attack animations.

I LOVE it, and can't wait to pour at least 100 hours into MH3 coming March.

You can solo anything in MH if you have enough skill.

Some quests are only playable when online. The first MH had a quite thin single player experience, but, once you got online, you could up your rank, hunt bigger monsters, and make some unique weapons and armors. It is a much more complete experience (which isn't really fair, but I can't blame the developers for incentivating you to go online).

Although I will play online, I hope MH3 isn't limited like the first, and let me at least forge all weapons and up some ranks on singleplayer.

Can you use the Wiimote to pretend your carving after you've killed the monster/dragon/dinosaur? or crouch on the balance board to save a few tenths of a second on the standing-->carving animation?:lol :lol :lol

cant wait to play MH3. L button on my PSP is broken so I havent played Freedom unite as much as I want.
Believe it or not, but shaking the nunchuck works for carving and mining as well as the A button. If you have the torch out, then you have to shake the nunchuck (as if you're carving xD)

Thank god, this was the only thing holding me back about the game. I have Freedom Unite on the PSP (haven't dug too far into it yet, but enjoying it thus far), but I can't wait to play it with my friends (most people I know don't have PSP's AND PS3's).

I think if they the online is free and wiispeak is in, they can expect around 100k of extra sales.

I expect it will sell 500k in the US when 2010 is over.

Excellent. I was more than willing to pay a measly $5 a month for something as incredible as MH online, but this is even better!

There isn't split screen is there? I doubt it, but it would be nice. I don't know anyone who wants to buy this game, but I'm sure I could convince some people to play it with me.

EDIT: Crap, didnt see this topic was a bit old. My bad.

I think there is, but it's only for an arena area or something similar.

I would have paid for a monthly service, but am glad that it will be free in the states.

Hopefully it will get a lot more people into the franchise.

Oh man, Voice chat! I won't have to use PS3 voice chat rooms for all the OG adhoc MHF2/MHU people that will get Monster Hunter Tri.

Friends lists, voice chat & no monthly/pay-to-play online and I will buy every MH related Wii product to support this product.

Oh yeah, Day One purchase for me.

Wait...this doesn't even guarantee no fees. They were noncommittal, which is scary because this is such a no brainer.

Reported by IGN as well:

Capcom shed the traditional Wii friend codes for an online interaction system built exclusively for the game. When you load up Tri and go into the online mode, it will behave similarly to Live or PSN with immediate connections to friends. If your buddies are entering a quest and they send you an invite, it will appear on your screen and you can join immediately. Also, if you go on a random quest with someone outside of your friends list, you can add them quickly and intuitively and play alongside them again.

Tri shipped in Japan sans WiiSpeak support, a disappointment given so much of the experience revolves around questing with your pals and therefore it'd be nice to chat with them. Capcom is hoping to correct this oversight with the American release of the game. The subsidiary is working closely with Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto to implement WiiSpeak support to the stateside version. It wouldn't confirm to us whether it was a go yet or not, a rep on-hand at CES said only that "... we're trying." But we're optimistic

Wiispeak is pretty cheap atm too ($19.99), unless you've already got one from Animal Crossing.

Also yay on no friend codes and an actual list.

GET IT ANYWAYS! We need more gaffers to like the series.

I would have laughed my ass off if they tried to charge for online play on this.

They do in Japan I think, but I think Capcom is owning the servers there. For the US release, it will be Nintendo servers right? Well, I know for sure it will be Nintendo servers in Europe since Nintendo is publishing it out there.

I know they do, but this isn't Japan.

The series is huge there, they can't get away with that here.

Looking forward to another good online title with Wii Speak. If Capcom let's us bypass friend codes as well, then.. uh, holy shit.

Sure they can, PSO did it and it's the same sort of game. XBL fees also gets you more or less what they are offering here. It's all in the marketing and how popular the game becomes.

I think Nintendo is handling the online in the US and Iwata takes a strong stance on reoccuring fees so it should be free. NOE is actually publishing the game in Europe so there even more-so. This should definately be a milestone in terms of Nintendo's own service. If it is indeed free it's instantly on the "to buy" list for me.

I think the two bolded are pretty much 100% at this point, especially with all the recent interviews saying Capcom wants it to be even more streamlined than the JP version/ "closer to XBL". As for Wiispeak, still have my fingers crossed.

EA has been pretty much been bypassing friend codes since they use EA Nation. I'm just surprised EA doesn't make more online enabled Wii games.

okay, now that's just awesome. There was no way I was going to "pay to play" but the idea of free online and no friend codes definitely has me intrigued.

I haven't posted in this thread before, can I post the image in your wake?

You guys honestly want WiiSpeak that much? What am I missing here? I just can't see myself using such a thing, and I'm surprised I'm the only one. I don't live in a place where I can just talk in English to my TV.

It would be pretty awesome though if I can hear other people without owning the peripheral. That could help.

Seeing as I'd be playing it with my friends in the comfort of my own living room, while they're hundreds/thousands of miles away, it beats having to hook up a USB keyboard that probably won't be supported.

Are we talking about the same game?

Of course MH3 supports USB keyboards. Heck, it even had a keyboard combo when it first came out.

If the online is free and the game has its own internal friends list that side steps Friend Codes I'll buy it. I might even track down a Wii Speak peripheral if chat is added.

How does adding friends in the Japanese version work?

does that exist for MH3, too? And is it real text chat, or just to enter short commands?

It wont be as strange as you think, since you'd be able to hear people speaking back to you. Really its no different than a desktop mounted mic.

lol you and me both.

Anyways, I'd probably fork out the money for Wii Speak if it ends up being supported in-game

I played Animal Crossing without Wii Speak(didn't get it with the game, was not available), and yes you can hear the other players who have the peripheral.
