Monster Hunter World Ancient Forest Gameplay (22 min)

You can tell that the people moaning about QTE's are either trolling or haven't played Monster Hunter before. The mounting works exactly the same as MH4 and MHGen, except you now also have a charge attack for it too.

Well it does seem like they added some mechanic where you have to jump to a different part of the monster at certain points, which does seem to be a QTE. I don't see why anyone would complain about this though... Expanding the simple mounting minigame is a good idea since the current one can be done with your eyes closed.

Actually i wasn't even comparing it to the 4th gen since i basically skipped it (although i'm aware of how much color saturated they were).

Freedom Unite and Tri are the ones i spend the most time with and i remember them being more colorful than MHWorld...

It's entirely possible that 4th gen having such a saturated color pallet has made the older games look more dull by comparison in my mind.

I didn't think it was a bad look, I just seem to remember everything in Tri having this kind of soft, pallid sheen over it unless you were underwater, and that 3 Ultimate looked more like P3rd in that it removed that and cranked the color up.

But again, my memory could be at fault here.

Having seen this gameplay in detail I'm cautiously optimistic, but I have some reservations about the combat and the focus on environmental hazards. The attacks in general lack the impact of previous games and just look weak, which is really out of character for the series. The movement options look a bit too generous in my opinion and I'm worried about a reduction in challenge as a result. Also the monster seemed to die pretty easily, the hunter spent most of their time farting around and not actually hitting the thing and it toppled over without much fuss; though to be fair maybe it's just a super weak tutorial monster.

I'm definitely going to try it but after 2500+ hours of 4U/X/XX I really hope it lives up to the same standard of challenge and hunt variety!

You don't need health bars. You just get a sense for monster health over time. Anyone who's done a capture quest with me knows what I mean, lol.

"uh capture guru says it's not ready why are you laying a trap"
"just hit it twice"
"mission complete"

I'd say it's objectively less of a 'QTE' than the old mounting system which was nothing but an arbitrary bar. Now you need to actively move around to avoid the monster's attempts to buck you off, run into things etc.

A primer on Mounting for newbies

Added in 4th gen along with Aerial combat and fast climbing/vaulting along with other cool freature like being able to quickly ascend small hills in the environment quickly

In 4th gen you initiate a mount by reaching a certain threshold of aerial attacks. One that threshold is reach you automatically mount the monster and a small minigame begins

In its first iteration all you had to do was mash attack and brace when the monster struggles. You had a gauge that would indicate how close you were to being thrown off. If you completed the mount mini game you would topple the monster and get some free hits in.

In MH4 when you mounted the other team members needed to stop attacking or they risk knocking you off. In Generations they removed this and allowed the team to contribute to the toppling mechanic.

Outside of a few balance changes this mostly stayed the same throughout 4th gen.

For 5th gen mounting is way more dynamic. The basics are the same. Aerial attacks to initiate a mount however now you can move around the monster... and you will need to

Your position on the monster matters. On his head? The monster will attempt to smash you into the environment by swinging his head into trees. On his back? He might try to jump his back into a wall.

Not to mention other layers such as being able to target hard to reach breakable parts like tails, wings, head, chest etc. The whole mechanic has been expanded. You can even get a chance to do a special attack with your weapon and use you grappling hook to recover a failed mount.

Its a big jump from MH4 guys

IMO this game looks like any MMO nowadays.
It has no charme to it.
I really like the handheld gfx better than this :/

You true colors are showing buddy

Unbelievable

It's like that guy on GAF a while ago who didn't like anti-aliasing and preferred everything looking "sharper". It's fine to have preferences, that's not what I'm knocking. I think just understanding your own preferences is important!

Afaik you're free to move around to different parts of the monster as you want. But in the demo, they do it to avoid getting knocked off -- it seems that depending on where you are, the monster will do different things to try and knock you off. Basically adds another layer to mounting.

I am curious if there's a limit to grappling back on though.

I think mounting has diminishing returns, so at some point the monster would resist. As for the hook, I don't know if there is a very small window to use it or if it just adds to the mounting resistance progressively i.e. it might just fail if resisted.

can;t wait for the PRO version!!

Yeah, it will be good to see some Pro and 1X footage soon but I am guessing even the Pro gives us an idea about X1.

Those mounting attacks were doing 1 damage each.

lol

Seems like a waste.

If it's anything like 4th gen, the mount isn't about doing damage directly. It's about knocking the monster on its ass to do crazy damage while it's incapacitated. The mount is a means to an end.

Outside of special attacks that you can use your main weapon (I wonder what the Bow is like?), World still seems to focus around mounting to topple them and then doing damage.

Since you can go target tails from a mount (other breaks too?), I'd say that's become a pretty big pay-off from mounting.

Mounting is less about the damage itself and more about toppling the monster, which will allow for other players to be able to reach parts of it that they wouldn't have been able to do before. Adding different anchor points is a pretty big step, since it appears that you can straight up damage the head and tail in addition to the back, so you also get an opportunity to break/sever those completely so that the rest of the team can focus on other things.

It wouldn't surprise me if hammer/hunting horn players would especially want to target the head, since I get the impression that they'll get a free KO out of a charge attack while mounted.

It all seems like such a massive leap forward for the franchise alongside current-gen graphics for the first time, I have like whiplash.

It's clear the team was just waiting for an opportunity to let loose and they finally got it. I often think how they must have felt watching the Cryengine Monster Hunter Online come into being while they were stuck in 240p hell.

Probably not often, since the timing would have meant that this was put into development before MHO even released. They barely acknowledged the existence of Frontier as it is, outside of token "fine, whatever" appearances of Hypnocatrice and Lavasioth in MHFU.

They wouldn't even be able to play it to compare, due to IP locking.

As it should be. For solo, mounting has never been worth it if you are solely concerned with dps. Mounting is powerful in groups because it gives your team time to sharpen, buff, and heal up and then you have a much stronger punish when the monster is toppled.

Mounting might be more worth it this time around because you can target specific parts. Getting a tail carve or stun off of a mount seems like it'd be pretty neat.

Mounting was already amazingly good for targeting parts, Having 10 seconds to hit a normally hard to reach part was usually enough time to do the majority of the health of most monster parts, but yeah it will definitely be stronger since you can focus your mount damage on another part as well instead of always the back.

Actually that new final attack that seems to end the mount minigame does pretty significant damage, so that's some more icing on the cake. I can already see myself getting triggered by tail cuts caused by the final mount attack. Anjanath seemed to get right up after that and skipped the toppled time altogether.... Same for a stun tbh. Overlapping CC always make me cringe a bit.

Hopefully psycoserum is still a thing. I don't want to look for the monster I just want to fight it.

Maybe it will be that if you track a monster with Scoutflies, the flies remember and will auto track a monster if you see it again.

If the monster just stays in the same zone, aka, old MH style, then the flies are pointless. I can understand people don't want to hunt over and over but you could always just run around and bump into the monster.

Maybe there will be more advanced Scoutflies or gear that is basically Psychoserum.

Riiiight, okay buddy.

This video is making me REALLY want to buy a new 2DS to hold me over until this game releases. Haven't properly played MH since Tri on Wii...

This is going to consume my life when it releases.

Game looks amazing tbh after MH 3u and 4u i was kinda burned out and this seems like a grrat time to jump back in.

Well i am jumping back in with Monster Hunter stories but yeah thats turn based:P

Glad to know that the gameplay was finally posted and we could see the gameplay itself in action besides through the "Leaked Footage" and the Japanese stream. Makes me all the more happy that this game is multiplatform and that we'll hopefully see the game as early into early 2018 as possible.

Do it.

I actually made a brand new save on 4U because the hype was getting to me.

Don't, get a 3DS or don't bother, MH on the 2DS screen is torture, worst handheld ever.

I meant the upcoming New 2DS XL lol, left out the XL part. I actually had a New 3DS for a little bit, didn't care for the 3D effect at all.

Which game is the better game overall, MH4U or Generations?

4U, has less bloat in it's missions. Generations is fun but has alot of basic gathering quests. Also 4U is 60fps while Gen is 30fps
