Monster Hunter X demo impressions

peeps who can play the demo

if you're actually good at lancing or using hunting horns, post impressions pls
I do both.

Aerial Lance is very versatile, and although you lose the charge-up, the combos you can get are satisfying. Bushido is pretty cool but the effectiveness of the follow-up to the "just guard" seems to depend on the monster and attack; for example, when the Great Maccau does his leap attack, it can land outside your attack range.

Hunting Horn got more awesome. The double-note change definitely rewards players who know the horn well and get into the thick of the fight, because if you get all double notes on the melody (by hitting the monsters), you not only gain the effect of that one, but also of the previous melody you played. The pace is faster as a result, as you don't need to pull off as many encores. The horn in the demo is a white-blue-green horn, so you get the defense/stamina/wind res/heal melodies. So, you can do self-improvement at the very beginning for movement speed, then directly go into the battle with the second melody like defense boost which also gains you the attack deflection prevention, and so on and so forth. There is also a skill you can build up to use to have all notes become double for a time, which you can use at your advantage. Just be aware that the combos are not the same for every style... Guild is same as 4, but Striker is not (gen 2?), and Aerial and Bushido are gen 3.

Dual Blades - Aerial

Enough for me. Day 1.

Tried the bow in guild style, just to check out the monster, and was instantly disappointed.

3D depth seems to be very low compared to 4/4G. I always played with 3D because it helped with virtually everything, but here it's hurting my eyes (same as when I tried playing 4/4G in 2D; everything just blends together).

I'm going to try other weapons and the other styles, but if the 3D depth isn't addressed in the finished game, I'm going to have a lot of trouble playing it.

Maybe it's because I wasn't using a bow, but I found 3D to be very good, maybe even better than in 4G (although I haven't used that one in a while, so it might be my memory being fuzzy).

I played 4G again last week, getting ready a little for X (haven't played much since upgrading to a n3DS) so it feels really apparent to me. 3G/4/4G didn't have the best 3D, but they all felt better than this. X feels like it maxes out at 50% depth.

Even tried the IG, and it felt exactly the same.

Is this demo one from TGS, or a new one?

A new one. The TGS one had a different UI for the starting menu iirc.
Also, the quest list from the TGS demo:
「ドスマッカォ討伐」
「ナルガクルガ討伐」
「ディノバルド討伐」
Too bad that Dinovaldo isn't in this demo, that fight was really fun.

Damn, so 3D depth will likely be the same in the final game...

Tried out charge blade guild a bit, red charge is achieved now by cancelling ultra during axe form, only took me 5 phials.

Feels similar so far only thing that I've noticed is that you cant do x->a+x->a+x (slash -> shield bash -> ultra). Its been changed into (slash -> bash -> charge shield) which kinda sucks imo. Guard point into ultra is still a thing so its not all bad though.

Just tried striker style, the third skill you get is a dash/dodge of sorts, not sure its worth losing shield bash for it though.

So how much has combat and hunting actually changed? Part of why I love the MH games is how long it takes to bring them down and how deliberate the combat is, a bit worried the franchise is moving away from that...

Could only download it four hours ago but couldn't play yet.
Will play after work, because I need to test and see which weapon/style combo I like or not before the game unlocks next week <3

Hmm? This is still Monster Hunter. The new movesets still retain that deliberate combat we've played since 2004.

I haven't been paying attention but early impressions I thought were that it was an action spin-off, going for more of a DMC or hacky slashy thing

The "maximum depth" that things go back to is much more shallow. Close-up things have very apparent depth, but anything more than 10 or 15 feet away is basically rendered at the same depth. Compare a monster standing 20 feet away from you with a monster standing all the way at the end of the zone. The difference between their 3D "layers" is virtually nil.

Is the hammer superpound good again? Felt hammer was more or less pointless since MH3G when playing in a group and not having the monster showing you its face the whole time. I also don't like other weapons being better at KOing.

Fuck man. I may import the full game. The hype is getting to me after watching these videos.

This looks good. Can you do this whenever you want or do you have to fill a bar first or something?

Frame rate issues with 3D on, hoping the full game doesn't struggle. This is on new 3DS. Only tried lance so far as a striker, not liking it that much.

You know the MH4U CB as room for a nerf while still being super useful.

Imma fight anyone who says the CB needs a nerf.

Seriously though, why does it need a nerf? I haven't played the other weapons so I have no basis for comparison.

Also, has the CB ultra burst animation been shortened from MH4U? I seem to the remember watching an MHX video where that short delay right before impact is gone. Just looking for confirmation because that might have been another weapon.

Animation in these games trumps most of AAA games out there... So much energy and rhythm in the movements, the weight of the weapons, the way the monsters move... it's sublime.

Those gifs look stunning, the even bested MH4 I guess with the effects - and that game on N3DS looked already beautiful.

Really hope this will come in 2016 in Europe. (and also MH stories the Rpg Spinoff)

Hororohoruru has the most annoying status attack in the history of this series. If you're hit by it, your controls become inverted, so left is right, up is down etc. Annnnnnoooooooooying.

Yeah, it's incredibly annoying. Ranged seems like a good approach

I've been mainly playing CB in MH4U too, I'm not saying it needs a nerf, I'm saying it can take one and still end up being a good weapon. As it is, the CB is versatile as fuck. You can dizzy monsters, break parts, cut tails, be efficient at status effect/elemental damage AND you can play counter game with it. There's no downside to it.

So is this a full sequel to mh4u? Does it have the village, tavern, crafting e.t.c.?
Yep, it's only a spin-off in the sense that they went "crazy" with the gameplay by adding the hunting styles (kinda akin to the DMC3 styles) and super skills.

Let's talk about no downsides when a Rathalos is up in the air and you're standing on the ground looking at it like a fool :P

Jokes aside, I'm not sure if a weapon needs to have a downside. It's certainly not the most popular weapon from what I've seen online. That honor definitely goes to the IG. But yeah, you're right, it wouldn't hurt the weapon too much if they did nerf something.

IMO yeah each weapon should have downsides, because it kinda makes me sad to look at all these guild cards I've collected and see 200 hours played, 500 charge blade uses, 0 uses on every other weapon.

I just looked up that poll on reddit asking which weapon you main, and charge blade is #1. LBG and HBG are at the bottom with 3%. rip ;-;

I don't get Bushido SnS, half of the time after the just evade, monster was so far away from me. :\

Anyway can't wait to play multiplayer, since this time you can attack the monster during riding without concerning the rider. People can bully the monster more.

I've never really played MH, so I'm pretty terrible at this. What's a good starter weapon? I'm sure I can't beat the second or third monster.
