More bad Sony email leaks: Talks about President Obama

I'm split. On one hand the jokes are incredibly mild. Yes, they have a racial context but come on. It's ridiculously inoffensive.

The problem is that the same guys making these jokes are also the ones casting movies. And that makes the jokes hit a little too close to home.

Yeah that is the thing. Their racism is from their hiring decisions, not from private jokes. They probably feel entitled to make jokes because they donated a shit ton of money to him.

But the joke by itself, without the context of their actual actions, is pretty mild.

The man was a lawyer, is the President.. Has had all kinds of ridiculous shit thrown at him like "he's a terrorist!", etc.. All kinds of things you could joke around with regaurding movies.

But instead they boiled him down to being black.

Does it prove they are racists? No; but proves they are childish and quick to throw around racial jokes.. Ones that aren't funny or clever.... Combine that with how influential they are and how many people work for them and IMO... Pretty shitty behavior.

It's not like via email they can get across satire; and I doubt they were being satirical of racists.

This is ridiculous. Just because they work at Sony doesn't make it morally right to go rooting around their personal shit like this. No one is perfect, big fucking deal if they're a bit racist. A lot of people are. Considering how mild this conversation is, it could be a lot worse.

Tabloid culture is disgusting.

This is surreal. I mean, why would you even go there, even if you were just joking? It's not even a particularly clever or funny joke. It's just "ha ha the president is black, let's name some movies about or starring black people."

I think that's just what's so shocking about it. It's just so basic. As someone else stated, he's the president: there's five million other jokes you could have made, but you decided to call him out for being black? WTF?

Also, who uses email like this? There's chat for more personal conversations these days.

You think they aren't joking about white people behind closed doors? Newsflash, there are some people that think racism is so absurd that they can have a joke about it.

That's not what's happening here, though. It's fairly obvious they're not goofing on "Obama's Favorite Movies & Comedy Stars" because they think racism is absurd.

They're joking about it because they feel safe in indulging in some diet racism behind closed doors in private emails.

Incredible how much traction this gif is getting ITT.

We could repost it every five posts or so and it would still be appropriate.

Some of you guys are just so painfully unaware. The willful ignorance would be depressing if it weren't so commonplace. I'm used to it.

Racism in Hollywood?

WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT, BROS.

Surely the lack of minority casting we see in some of these movies is purely because audience-goers won't support non-white actors in leading roles, right? Or maybe...there are just a lot of mothafuckas like these assholes keeping that glass ceiling in place.

Crazy enlightening newsflash bro. Appreciated. They are making references based on the fact that he's black. There's no quasi racism by the means of mocking racism to be had here.

This thread is weird.

What's the threshold on racism. When does it not become OK?

There is none. If you are racist, then you are being a terrible person. But I do agree with him, no one deserves to have their personal info leaked. Just because they are racist, doesn't excuse that.

Still, it's out there. Is what it is now. They deserved to be judged based on the content out there (even if I don't approve of the convos being leaked). Even if it's a private convo, they are clearly being racist. And they should be judged for their own actions. You don't get to be racist just because you are behind closed doors.

Edit: I should clarify that racist actions are never okay.

A thing I notice is that we seem to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to brand people as "racist" and then squabble over the definition. This has come up in many threads. I think this is because it has vile and filthy connotations that must seep into every fiber of one's being, you are less than human, a racist. But ultimately I find this labeling unhelpful for dealing with such works of ignorance if not ignorance in itself. It really doesn't matter how you label the person and they will ultimately never live up to the platonic ideal, this activity is just a distraction. I wonder if there's a better way to discuss such things while removing the insults and just talking about the issues, the feelings, the ignorance and may even solutions?

Old white people.

I'm not racist though! Just an observation!

Eh, I just know they are being disrespectful towards someone because of their race and making jokes at the expense of their race. And that's not cool. Whether they are actually racist in a larger sense (how they treat people, and their own personal actions)...I guess we don't know. But I think it's fair game to look at this convo and say, hey that's racist. And that's really fucked up. What assholes. etc. etc.

If you want to differentiate between calling someone a racist, and someone saying something racist...

Serious question: Does that mean it's okay for hackers to start hacking emails in the hopes of outing "secret racists"?

No, it absolutely does not. I clearly said I do not support these leaks. And said that just because you are racist, doesn't mean your private convos should be hacked and leaked. Just because someone is a terrible person, doesn't give you the right to do terrible things to them.

I was just saying, because the convos are out there, I mean...we are going to judge them. And just because they were saying it in private, doesn't suddenly make it not racist. I think it's a weak excuse to say that because you were in a private convo, it was just a joke and you aren't really being racist. It's like, why would you even tell a racist joke in the first place. Even behind closed doors. I dunno. I don't see the point.

i actually was entertaining the idea that it would be cool if other studios got emails leaked as well but you're right, at the end of the day it's a violation of privacy.

So, is your avatar some sort of shield?

?? My avatar is one of my favorite musicians.

I'm not defending these fucks. I just find it odd that people will willingly ignore 100 years of hollywood minimally hiring talented black people, but get pissed at some mild private email exchange. I'm just a believer in challenging people based on their actions and not their private thoughts. You don't need these emails to know that hollywood is filled with scum. Read that Chris Rock interview, he articulated it far better than I can, I'll just say I agree with it 100%.

There is just no line to be drawn. Unless we want it like the wild west. People need to keep in mind that, a lot of good people are being hurt over this. It's not just the out of touch rich (possibly racist) assholes that are being embarrassed.

SSN, and other private info has been leaked by a lot of hard working folks that have to work under these assholes. But there is no like...line with this kind of stuff. That's why I can't ever support leaks like this (a violation of privacy). Just because someone is terrible, doesn't make it okay to do this to them.

Something to be said about what people say, and what their actions are. I can agree about that. Still, it's hard to feel anything but distaste for anyone that jokes like this, just because they behind closed doors and not in public. I mean, if I had a friend making racist jokes. Making jokes against gays or any minority. Or against women, I wouldn't tolerate that. And most of the people I know...just wouldn't do it. So eh.

Serious question: Does that mean it's okay for hackers to start hacking emails in the hopes of outing "secret racists"?

Generally, I'd say no. But I'd also say that the level of power and influence an individual has should also be part of the conversation too. These are people with an awful lot of both power and influence, and their words and actions could be impacting the fair gainful employment of minorities in and around their immediate purview.

Exactly. People saying "it could have been worse" are missing the point.

I know what you said, but by saying they're going to be judged all the same, your actions are speaking louder than your words.

I think these guys are assholes, but it's strange that this is how their comments have been brought to light.

It sucks their privacy was violated. If it's not indicative of who they are then they should make a public apology and make strides to take an actual stand. What have they actually done to shake things up? You're trying to give them the benefit of the doubt on their actions, which would be publicly known if they were actions of any significance at all.

But again it doesn't matter if thing X is racist or not. It's foolish to think that the most major problems dealing with race come from a source that is outwardly racist. While I think it's better to describe actions rather than people what matters is not how you label it but how it makes people feel and what harm it does. Sure your blood boils and so you call the dude an asshole but my note is that this seems to be the primary focus of a lot of threads and that's just not helpful.

I know what you said, but by saying they're going to be judged all the same, your actions are speaking louder than your words.

I can't control that their convo is out in public. Are you saying since it was leaked in a way it shouldn't be, therefore it should not be judged?

It's something to think about it. I just know I do not support hacks and leaks. But I can see your point about not judging something that we shouldn't be able to see then, as well. But I guess what I would argue is, you don't keep trying to correct wrongs with more wrongs. So while it may be wrong to look at a private convo leaked online and judge it (when you shouldn't have been able to see it), I don't think that suddenly makes it okay for it to have been leaked in the first place.

It's probably hypocritical. I guess the way I see it, it doesn't matter how terrible a person is, they shouldn't have their personal info leaked. But once that info is now all over the place, people are going to look at it...and judge it. Because it's out there. And this is their actions. Good or bad. If that makes people terrible for judging them based on a convo they shouldn't have seen, that's definitely something to think about. I think it's human nature that people are going to judge. They can't help it, if they read it. They won't be able to take into context, that this wasn't supposed to be seen.

But that doesn't mean that hacks/leaks should then be universally supported.

But again it doesn't matter if thing X is racist or not. It's foolish to think that the most major problems dealing with race come from a source that is outwardly racist. Sure, I think actions can be racist. I think...words can have racist context. If you want to argue whether someone is then racist or not, I dunno. I guess it's not something I'm interested in. I generally don't label people racist, unless I actually know them and their actions. I just know, the subtext and context of this convo to me, was def racist. Whether these two specific mean are racist, with a history of racist actions, I don't think you can come to that conclusion purely based on this convo. I can still look at the convo though, and say they are assholes.

Who are the people ignoring that in this thread? Or anywhere else for that matter? As far as I know, it's been an issue black actors and others have talked about for ages. Chris Rock was just talking about it.

Everyone already knows Hollywood is a racist hellhole. It goes without saying and isn't likely to be challenged anytime soon until the american mainstream starts thinking differently about black people.

In fact, the only thing these emails being leaked are doing (besides providing delicious lols) is highlighting that fact.

I cant even get mad at this. I get really annoyed when people think I like certain movies/media/music based on my ethnicity, but in this case I dont extend my ire to it happening to others, but I recognize this frustration.

It's too late for me to think of a decent way to retort, so I guess I'll leave it with this: These two will likely be out of a job by the end of the fiscal year, and it's because some hackers leaked some private convos they had. To me, that's really creepy.

This could have been MUCH WORSE. Eh, it's pretty innocent guys.

Yeah, I'm thinking the person who leaked these really wants to destroy these guys, but this is the worst he could find. People in this thread acting like this email is shifting tectonic plates, but I think 90% of people aren't really going to care (for better or for worse).

Who are those people? How would that even work? Is there even such a person in this thread? I'd assume anyone put off by this exchange in anyway would also be annoyed at how underrepresented minorities and women are in major roles in Hollywood (i.e. their actions - see Exodus casting). We can comment about this (though the more important thing is its context and what it tells us about these people given the power they wield) while still caring or being even more upset by the "big stuff".

Yes it is. And I think it's terrible.

I edited my post. But basically, I don't disagree with you. You bring up some things to think about. I mean, if we agree that hacking/leaking private info is not okay, then is it okay to look at that private convo once it's leaked, and then judge it?

It's a bit hypocritical. It's a hard thing for me. Because on the one hand, I do not support the hacks/leaks. I don't believe in this idea that, if you are terrible, then anyone can do whatever they want to you (and do terrible things to you). But it's like, once that convo is all over the place. People are going to read it, and then judge it. It's human nature. And their actions are their actions.

I dunno. You have my brain in knot. *shrugs* I don't have the answer.

I guess maybe I'm not morally consistent. Maybe I should re-examine my views. One thing is for sure, we can both agree that hacking/leaking of private info is not okay. It's truly heinous. So I guess we can find common ground there. I'll think about what you asked. I mean really, I'll reflect and think on it.

EDIT:

I know this technically isn't a leak. Sorry for the wrong term. I think people misuse the term, because they look at it being put online (and that is what they think of as a leak). But it's not the correct term. My apologies.

Well technically "leaks" come from an inside source. So this isn't really a leak.

You would call Snowden a leaker, but not Assange.

An involvement of an insider is quite likely given the sheer mass of data.

Yeah, I'm thinking the person who leaked these really wants to destroy these guys, but this is the worst he could find. People in this thread acting like this email is shifting tectonic plates, but I think 90% of people aren't really going to care (for better or for worse).

You probably have outdone here, in terms of hyperbolic wording.
