More HD Classics coming - MK Collection and PoP Collection

Yeah, that one. How many games get summer blockbusters that make $300 million+?

If that's the one you mean, how is that good timing? The movie has already been released both in theaters and on home media. I think most people already forgotten about ever seeing it, and those who wanted to play the game after watching the film bought Forgotten Sands.

Unfortunately, as proven in various forms of media before, movie adaptations (even successful ones) rarely transfer to sales of products in the same family unless directly labeled as movie merch. The X-Men movies didn't raise sales of X-Men comics, the Spider-Man movies didn't raise sales of Spider-Man comics, the Tomb Raider movie didn't help sales of the games, and the Prince of Persia movie didn't help sales of the loosely connected Forgotten Sands game which was released alongside it. I can't imagine this HD package would have seen much benefit at all even from being released along with the movie, let alone coming months after the fact.

I realized as much after just looking up Forgotten Sands sales. My initial thought was that the movie would at least be enough to make Sony release the collection since it is a trilogy, the name association is good, and it's all in all a low cost release. Although it's probable that they would have done it anyway.

Erm, Prince of Persia isn't Sony's series. It's Ubi's. And yes, I think it would have come anyway, just to keep the franchise out there and making money while they think hard about where to go next with it.

For the folks wondering if these are going to be PS3 exclusive, I think they might.
Think about it, these are fully for-profit ports, so keeping the port costs down is paramount.

One way to accomplish that is to drop 3 games on 1 blu-ray disc rather than ending up with multiple DVDs. Even lumping 3 PS2 DVD games into a DD would make for a large download.
The PS3's 3D capability is also playing a role since media companies seem to think that is the future of entertainment money.

What was the filesize of the GOW Collection? This definitely seems like something that will show the benefit of Blu-Ray.

We'll start getting more demos on our game discs (EA are doing this) and we'll get more games put on one Blu-ray.

HAHA ZING!

Did it really rake in that much? I just picked it up and watched it on Blu-ray last weekend and enjoyed it. The only thing that would have made it better would be if they had used the dagger for a big event where he effed up and at the last minute rewound time and he scanned for the proper route. I just felt that it was underused and it was written in that way with limited sand and all that.
Yeah it pulled like $330 mill gross worldwide. Not enough to cover the production costs, but a healthy DVD life along with broadcast rights and stuff like that should throw it into the black at some point.

Is the 360 getting these or not?

I don't have one, I'm a PS3 owner; but I was just curious if these remakes were going multi-platform.

Having the PoP series in 60fps HD will be terrific.

Wish companies would stop pretending that 3D TV is the future, at least in its current state. Right now, its sole purpose is to screw foolish consumers out of their money.

I would buy the PoP trilogy as getting widescreen to work in the PC release is severely broken for Sands of Time (I didn't even bother trying the hack on Warrior Within).

I would also probably break down and buy Splinter Cell trilogy just because I always wanted to play the PS2 exclusive level in 1. And I'm a whore for the series.

And I wish naysayers would shut up about it, because it's entirely optional and doesn't seem to ever result in a worse product.

Man if the MK collection supports sticks, I'm all over this (I have no idea why it wouldn't be). I could never get MK2 to work with my stick :(. I miss my arcade teenager days of whipping ass in these games.

will get caught by every single HD remake announced so far. (I already own all those games in their original form but, HD collections are awesome)

I want to see more of these coming out of Japan. God of War collection was awesome, I'll totally buy the Team Ico, Sly Cooper, and Prince of Persia collections, but so many of my favorite PS2 games/series were developed in Japan.

As far as I'm concerned, if they keep churning these bitches out, backwards compatibility can fuck off.
As far as I'm concerned, I see no reason why we can't have our cake and eat it too.

I'm going to pass on the MK collection (I suck at fighting games) and will only get the PoP collection if the game breaking bugs in Warrior Within are fixed. I played through that game probably 5 times (each time being unable to finish it due to game-breaking bugs) and finally just gave up. I loved the combat in it too.

Wonder if these will get 360 versions, I would rather buy them sooner then later.

Is there any hard truth to the rumor that actors were called on and re-digitized for the HD kollection?
I don't think so, sounds very costly, and you could never get them to do the poses exactly the same.

Nothing at all. We know that the rumor that initially said that they were going to redo the graphics also mentioned that the collection would include UMK3 instead of MK3. So that's one thing that they have right.

That's a good sign. Hope fully they can recast actors and get them to do those moves again.

:(
I'm not sure if its gonna be costly. All you need to do is hire 3 or 4 part time martial artists and make them do stuff in front of green screen. Also I dont think you can HD-ify the original games without making them look atrocious. Digitized images cannot be upscaled, as far as I know.

I am really curious to see how MK looks and if they added anything to those games. Just the 3 Arcade games for 40 bucks will probably be a hard sale for me.

Looking forward to PoP Trilogy for everyone replaying 1 and getting their rosy memories trampled on by the annoyingly frequent "beat all these guys in shitty combat to progress" segments they selectively forgot.

And conversely, the mass realization that Two Thrones is actually far and away the best of the trilogy (chariot segments aside).

That'll be the day on the official PoP Forums to see... Personally I still like SOT with its semi-lackluster combat.

I will buy a PS3 for the PoP collection, since they are among my favorite games ever. I have the PC versions, which are not bad, but they lack widescreen support, and their controller support isn't too great either.

These posts are getting really annoying.

Digital Pictures HD Collection with Sewer Shark, Night Trap, and Ground Zero Texas, please.

Wow, I will buy PoP, the only one i played of that trilogy is two thrones and I would love to see the backstory of it. Hopefully they improve on the graphics because when I played two thrones, the graphics was just muddled. Nice animation though (as expected from PoP games)

can't wait.:D

Damn, Sony is hitting it out of the park with these collections. I'd really love an HD Sands of Time, but no PS3 :( This and the HD Ico?SOTC collection are really making me consider it though.

Rayman?! I need to hear more about this. I never got around to Rayman 2 or 3 and I've always regretted that.

Hysteria is usually the first reaction people have when trying to come to terms with the superiority of objectively and indisputably the best gaming platform on the market.

Slow down, son. While this is obviously true in terms of technical horsepower, the platform of choice all depends on what you like as a gamer. Bayonetta and Uncharted 2 are two of my fave games in a long, long time and they are both console exclusive. Lately, Demon's Souls, Super Street Fighter IV, Red Dead Redemption and Halo Reach have won lots of hearts and there isn't a game I am looking forward to more than The Last Guardian. And there are dozens more, ranging from stuff like Journey to GT5 to Gears III to Vanquish.

As a gamer, I seriously couldn't live without my consoles.

well PoP not Sony's IP nor published by them and they were multiplat last gen , I just don't see Ubi just relenting this on one platform ,since you know it's easy money for Ubi ( also there is no "Only on PlayStation" on the PoP box).

You're not really missing much with 3, something just felt really off about that one. 2 is damn fine, though.

But it is Sony's initiative. Technically the games aren't only on Playstation as they are on other platforms. The 'Only on Playstation' thing really does hold a lot of weight.

T2T was definitely the best in terms of platforming and combat imo, (due to the stealth kill mechanic) but SoT still is the more charming and memorable game. It had an amazing magical atmosphere that was lost when they decided to make PoP an M-rated franchise.

Also sign me up for FFXII international.

i want all these as downloads. eff these discs.

If they're downloads, suddenly they're not too far from how backwards compatibility works on the 360 which could get a little messy PR-wise. It's best for every gaming forum's sanity for Sony to sell people something to stuff in their drive while they play PS2 games on the PS3. :/

Maybe once we get universal PS2 BC, having these as even paid downloads wouldn't be a big deal.

I can't help but feel like I would prefer to see a proper MK Trilogy in HD, over these three games. That version was godly for those of us who enjoyed the gameplay of MKIII.

Agreed. I enjoyed the game's platforming but always ended up using all of the sand power in those fights, so annoying.

Hell no. Final boss fight in Two Thrones made me want to murder someone. Vizier fight in Sands of Time was bad, but Two Thrones was much worse. And combat is only ever slightly improved. The introduction of the one-hit kills was a nice addition to bypass the combat, but it still remained a pain in the ass whenever you HAD to engage the enemy.

I played (and still own) the cube version of Sands of Time, skipped Warrior Within due to previews, reviews and a PS2 demo (I think? can't remember anymore) and owned (but sold) the xbox version of Two Thrones. Will wait for videos on this one to decide whether I should buy it or not.
