Mortal Kombat 8 REVEALED IN ALL ITS GLOR...wait, what is this?

Mortal Kombat was never really that good of a fighting game (especially the recent ones), I mostly played them for the over the top fatalities and what not. Without that what are they? A medicore fighting game?
I say this all the time. No MK fighter ever had good gameplay. Even the "good" ones, meaning the first two, were crap gameplay-wise compared to other fighters at the time. ie Your Street Fighters and Fatal Furies etc.

If it wasn't for the blood, fatalities and crazy storylines, this series would've never gotten off the ground.

It still amazes me to this day how they constantly get away with putting out game after shitty game.

Isn't Thor a marvel character? And Raiden is supposed to be the God of thunder? Many of the Mortal Kombat characters are sorcerers/necromancers, demons and Elder Gods too. I don't think it's that hard to believe they could hold their own
But you also have the "normal" humans and ninjas etc.

You are correct. Dunno how I got him mixed up in that.

True enough. I'm just curious as to how they'll explain away the differences in power that both sets of universes are known for. They could, of course, ignore that altogether like a Capcom game.

i say buff up the mk characters and have "The Matrix"-like fights.
I agree. I want to see it still have the close-up battling depth seen in past games (though hopefully more refined and polished than past games), but want to see lots of new ways to play from afar.

I keep looking for the Christian Bale gif where he is doing like an interview and talking about kicking Superman's ass but I can't find it.
It somehow would be perfect here though :lol

How about this one instead?

Theoretically you can say they're just as "normal" as Batman. Most of the characters have mechanical arms or freakish marvel-like powers anyway. Really, the only imbalance in facing them up would come from Superman

But I think the MK characters should have a small reinvention/buff-up. Make the entire moveset look crazy and more powerful. They should be attacking like Kratos rather than like Street Fighter in these days

Does this mean that Superman, Thor and the rest of the god-like DC characters will be weakened so as to not utterly destroy the MK cast?

First, Thor is Marvel.

Second, did you play the Marvel vs Capcom games? They have guys like the Hulk, Thanos, etc. - mega powered guys against the human street fighter cast and other capcom weaklings (jill valentine, etc.). There's less of a discrepancy in MK vs DC when a lot of the MK characters are extremely powerful (Shao Khan, Onaga, Goro, Shinnok, etc.).

Yeah, I'd go for that. They need to do something to spice up the gameplay.

Heh@ the title change.

Already covered in my subsequent posts. As mentioned before in the thread, MK has always felt a bit more grounded in reality with its martial arts-types even despite the crazy fantastical characters and elements that it does include. Maybe this will be an opportunity to show just how much more powerful the MK characters are compared to a normal human, making them come across as more or less as powerful as your average comic book superhero.

Does no one think that a game of these comics characters fighting in super interactive, desctructible environments War of the Monsters/Powerstone style is a better idea than...than....this?!

Well theres far too much fighting action coming out for me to be too concered about this. But much like other childhood kickass games (Sonic) i've still got faith it could possibly be good.

We know how good MK games can be when they stray away from their formula.

Wait is this for real, that pic of sub zero(?) and batman.
Like for reeeal, like so real I could play it on my xbox if I wanted to?

WHAT THE FUCK DUDE

Well, maybe not that real...:p
Xbox 360 and PS3...and Wii..apparently.. :p

Okay. I jump to the last page of this thread and there's a bunch of Superman/Batman shit going on. It's not until I hit the bottom of the page when I realize "Wait. This isn't OT. What's this thread about again?"

Then I go back a few pages...

...

...

This could be fantastic.

VERY fantastic.

Aren't people getting it yet? The only way you can have a "Mortal Kombat Returns To It's Roots!!!" game three years from now is if it goes down the crapper RIGHT NOW. Hence this piece of dried feces. It's all about the next game where they bring back the blood and fatalities and everyone is like 'yeah, Mortal Kombat is back!' You can't have a comeback if you never go away.

It's arguably been in the crapper since the early to mid 90s. Nothing's brought it out since then, so why do you think it'd be brought out 3 years from now?

But it really hasn't been in the crapper. Deadly Alliance got good reviews, so did Deception. And all three games sold really well. So this whole idea that "Mortal Kombat has been dead since 1995" is not really accurate. People still buy these games. Reviewers still review them highly. I know it's considered 'hip' to hate on all things MK, but that doesn't align with reality.

And when MK tames it down to a "T" rating and removes fatalities, then that is when it is really gone. As it is now. That's the point. You don't think the next game (or whenever they bring back blood and fatalities) will get added buzz for being a 'return to Mortal Kombat's roots!'

???

Please...

Which is why I said it was arguable. They might've sold and reviewed well, but ask anyone who's actually a fan of fighters and they'll tell you they play pretty damn badly.

This, however, I agree with.

Still, I thought the T rating was just a rumor? *shrug*

What other industry has a company actively making sequels to something that was popular over 10 years ago and died a horrible death?

Movies do this too.

Rocky
Rambo
Die Hard
Alien vs Predator

...

Edit: Wow, I just realized how late I was with this reply.

No one's saying Deadly Alliance matches up with Soul Caliber or Virtue Fighter. Same way no one said Mortal Kombat matched up with Street Fighter. So how has it really changed?

It was a second class fighting game back in the 90's for the cheap thrills. Exactly what Deadly Alliance and Armageddon were when they came out. There's no dropoff. Mortal Kombat never changed.

Except for today. If they drop to a Teen rating and cut blood out, then THIS is the dropoff. Not all those other sequels people like to bring up, even though they were all pretty much a perfect extension of the games that came before them.

Wait...where are you guys getting the "T" rating info from? Has it been confirmed or are you guys just assuming because of the DC license? But yeah, WTF is Mortal Kombat without blood and fatalities?! That would definitely piss me off....They better make the fighting system better than Virtua Fighter 5's to make up for the lack of MK's signature features!!! :P

I liked Live Free or Die Hard, and Rambo IV and Alien vs. Predator Requiem (Didnt care for the firs film).

Pretty much that. People figure that DC wouldn't allow the characters to be "killed". So the T rating rumor came about.

If this isn't T rated and you can rip Batman's head off, I think we'd have a bigger backlash for DC than we're seeing right now for Mortal Kombat. That would make DC 10x more pathetic than Midway or Mortal Kombat. Filth is MK's forte. But DC should know better.
