Mortal Kombat 8 REVEALED IN ALL ITS GLOR...wait, what is this?

Why? Why this?

If DC HAD to crossover, we should have gotten DC vs Capcom as the spiritual sequel to Marvel vs Capcom. At least that would have worked.
Capcom and Marvel went their separate ways because Capcom couldn't get the same favourable deal with Marvel that they could when they were in Chapter 11. DC's big guns command an even higher fee *and* DC is a lot more douchebaggy about creative control. I'm sure Capcom at least looked into it at some point.

I mean shit, DC is the company that made Wizard/Toyfare stop using their toys in their jokey comic strips under threat of suing.

why would DC choose a second rate franchise to join up with?

Because historically, they're too stupid to get with developers like Arc (who could have done a kickass 2d fighter) or even Namco.

So...in 6h we should see videos and shit.

If those are real time models on the poster then I think I will be pleased with the graphics.

It's the closest to photo textures Midway done since WarGods.

Mortal Kombat Eulogy

Mortal Kombat, my friend, I hardly knew thee but were very dear to me. You filled my teenage years with happiness as I tried to accomplish every fatality, babality, animality, and friendship. I remember the time that my brother threw the controller at me after I defeated him 33 times in a row. Yes I did bleed but your eventually forgave my bro. You had a good heart. You made me laugh every time I did the chripractor's nightmare fatality with Sub Zero. Those were some good chuckles and I even through in a 'Oooooooo'. We grew apart. I stayed 2D and you went 3D. We did drift apart but I still remembered that friendship. No Rain or Reptile could have seperated us. After so many years we crossed paths again but this time on the DS. We even shared a beer or two or ten. Those were the days. I will miss you my friend. I will miss you.

Well because little Billy, one was made at the prime of 2d fighting games. And the the other is being made at the massive decline of a once popular franchise.

umm, the versus series wasn't made at the prime of 2d fighting. tekken, soul caliber/edge, etc was already out by that time running the arcades. the 2d glory days was the early 90s during the sf2/sf2 turbo era. by the x vs sf came out the tekkens, and soul edge/caliburs were the new kids on town taking everyones quarters.

I'm gonna hold you in my arms forever
Gonna try and make up for all the times
I hurt you so"

I couldn't have given two shits about MK up until now. With DC involved I may look into this. Marvel would have been better obviously, but I'll give it a chance.

Uh yes, a headshot of two opponents staring each other down is a rather common theme in entertainment marketing.

LOOOOOTS of Marvel/Hasbro comics did it in the 80's. There's actually one ad that had the three issues in succession: Transformers, Thundercats, and GI Joe. I wish I had the issue here in Japan. I would love to scan it and put it up.

Hence... ".. and that was far from original either." Even down to the dark clouds in the BG. And the buildings right underneath. And the lighting. And... and... well I ran out of content that the barebones MK poster contains.

Is anyone taking bets on the excuse they use to gimp superman?

My bet is "Alternate dimension that houses Mortal Kombat has an orange sun that leaves Superman with all his powers, but in a somewhat weakened state."
Actually, if Taven's ending from Armageddon is canon, then practically all the MK fighters ended up being more powerful then ever, which could explain how they can go toe-to-toe with the stronger DC heroes.

Plus, you know, magic.

I just don't see the appeal of MK without the violence. Anyone who thinks that the series is popular due to it's gameplay is deceiving nobody but themselves. :(

If they can nail the gameplay WITH the violence, great. If not, I can't see this being any more interesting than Tekken/Soulcalibur, and both of those have been living primarily on
cleavage
gameplay (Whether it be depth or accessibility) for some time now.

Wow. Lots of hate on here for this. Personally, I'm sold. I think the MK series was getting very stagnant and this is a brand new day for them. No fatalities was a pretty big decision I'm sure. But hey, now we've got some pretty cool comic characters involved, and a chance to shed the old skin and try something entirely new. Count me in.

Besides, most of you bitchers probably can't even name the last Mortal Kombat game, much less talk as if you've played it or even cared about the series. I've been along for the ride since MK1 hit arcades and I'm telling you, I'm all for this. GO MIDWAY!

Violence is the signature of the MK series though. I think many people (Myself included) have forgiven the fact that it doesn't play all that well because of how entertaining it was as a spectacle.

It would make more sense to me to acquire the DC licence and to build a good solid fighter purely as a DC product. As it is, it seems as though they're doing this to give MK a leg-up, but losing the identity in the transition.

I'm not questioning the business sense, but it seems like it could be a missed opportunity to make a solid fighting game based on some of my personal favourite comic characters.

this game has casual gamer written all over it :lol

2 million sold confirmed, another mk installment confirmed.

Dare I say it ... should I say it .... Heck I'll say it!

Wii-effect baby! Casuals now command the most attention :lol :lol :lol

So, I'm thinking about the matchup.

According to the poster Sub-Zero is to Batman like Scorpion is to... who?

Superman is bit insane - I'm leaving his evil version as the boss.

Shit, I must google DC characters.

But Green Lantern would get his ass kicked by Scorpion. His ring would have no effect.

Post Geoff Johns' Rebirth, rings now work on yellow.

wow, i must say this caught me off-guard. I could imaging different characters in MK world, dunno, Chuck Norris, or Balthier, but Batman?!?! wow.

wow.

PS. Google adds is scary stuff, I'm getting Filipina hearts banner for this page. :)

uh oh

Mortal Kombat Online reported Midway Games has confirmed last fall’s rumor that a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe video game is in the works.

Today, Midway Games confirmed what had been rumored for a while: the first next-generation Mortal Kombat title, up until now called “Mortal Kombat 8″ by the community, is officially titled Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. As the title suggests, it will be a crossover with the characters and setting of DC Comics.

Lots of unanswered questions remain, such as will the game have the signature fatality moves Mortal Kombat fans have grown to love. Details about its gameplay are still unknown, although a past interview with creator Ed Boon revealed that the next installment of Mortal Kombat would be more serious.

It’s going to be a fighting game, definitely, but after that anything can go”, he added, talking about the fact that he’s starting from scratch for the new game.

The game will have more features, take advantage of motion-sensing controllers and “try to introduce as many new characters as possible”.

Initially, talk of a Mortal Kombat/DC Universe pairing had comic and gaming fans writing off the possibility as a far-fetch senseless idea but in light of the news from today, expect a new round of speculation of how good or bad it could be.

This is embarassing for DC. I would never want my beloved characters to be involved in any shape or form with Mortal Kombat.

I'll agree with the violence being a signature of the series, but honestly, did anyone take it seriously after MK2? The series used to be this cool underground fight club where you could get pitted against gods and magical beings only to have your head ripped off for losing. It was very harsh. Then when MK3 rolled around, the whole thing kind of felt like a comic book. The story was getting ridiculous and the characters brought out designs like Stryker. Then the transition to 3D got even farther from being real and gritty. It became a showcase of He-Man action figures clunkily fighting eachother.

Don't get me wrong, I've always been an MK fan. Its been part of my fondest gaming memories from childhood and I can still appreciate the latest entries in the series. Hell, I really liked Shaolin Monks too. I'm just saying, the violence lost its effectiveness when things got way corny.

So instead of making a new installment corny, make it more gritty and serious and dark, pretty much what Ed Boon stated.

This just doesn't seem like it will work. Who knows, we could all end up eating our words.
