Mortal Kombat First Look: Inside the R-rated Reboot

This movie sucks. If the whole thing was top notch like the first scene the movie would have been great. But it goes downhill and the new guy makes no sense at all. Kung Lao was the best thing in the movie.
Yea, too bad what they did to Kung Lao.

What the hell Raiden could've saved him, some stupid reason that he couldn't interfere. Ehh! hello you already interfering by helping train them and then porting them all out to save the others

I love Hiroyuki Sanada as much as the next guy but the dude is in EVERYTHING. Do we not have any other Japanese actors?
For real, it's not like the role had any English lines.

When the Scorpion says "Get Over Here" for me it was out of place, knowing Hanzo/Scorpion never spoke English before and after he met Cole
Because of this, a lot of the character tag lines seem out of place and brings me out of the moment.

Not sure if I want to watch the full movie, from the clips I've watched it seems a bit meh in particular the score which sounds like something from a DC or Marvel movie, so bland. Not saying the 1995 movie is amazing or superior , that one had a charm to it tho particularly Christopher Lambert and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

The score is absolutely the worst. It's 100% generic, it's too loud and distracting in many scenes and the bass drops early in the film are even more annoying than in modern blockbluster flicks.

I know the original film didn't have a huge budget but this one feels much cheaper. The original went to real locations. This one feels like nothing but generic sets.

This movie was really bland. I'm embarrassed I was looking forward to it. Its genuinely worse than Annihilation, which at least fell into so-bad-its-good territory at times.

Sonya was cute I guess? Struggling to think of what I liked.

I mean it wasn't a good movie but it was an entertaining one and I enjoyed it. Dunno why people are so down on it. Its supposed to be a film based on a video game franchise it's never going to be Citizen Kane.

Because there's already a superior version done more than 25 years ago with a lower budget.

No offence , your post reminds me of the responses to Michael Bays Transformers , "well what do you expect, it's not Shakespeare" and so on, when no one said otherwise.

Films like these can always have better pacing, writing, score, direction etc.

I haven't watched it yet, but the way you described it feels totally out of place. They could've just made him speak English with a Japanese accent from time to time (or all the time) like Shredder from TMNT 2 movie.

I found it to be good and enjoyable, few things were done better than I expected and there is some really good scenes.
It's no master piece though, it's a popcorn movie that you watch and move on from without a care if there is going to be a sequel or not.

Liu Kang took a babality before the movie even started....
Happy You Good GIF

I haven't watched many movies recently because they've been producing garbage but i wanted to see this because I have HBO Max and it's free so why not...

It further confirmed that entities that be are still producing garbage mostly for kids and manchildren that don't know what a good movie is.

Do yourself a favor and spend your time on a game you enjoy.

Scorpions Revenge was 10x better.

WAY better writing
Way better fights
Way more violent.
Focused on Scorpion. Yet there was still a Tournament
Good twist at the end

Yeah more so Citizen Kano (sorry).

On that subject Kano saved the movie for me, he was pretty hilarious, everyone else was a bit meh really imho. It felt low budget and seemed to be pandering to the Chinese market. I liked it enough that I hope it does well enough to make a sequel, but just barely!

Worse than the first but better than Annihilation (the lowest of bars)

Although I probably would have paid money to see this in theaters because schlock like this is my jam. It wasn't that terrible but there's no way they'd ever make a sequel. I mostly thought to myself that people completely unfamiliar with the game would have no idea who anyone was or what was happening.

Personally I still think Annilation was better. It had better music, better fights, and the characters still jelled together more.

This film was just hot garbage. After hearing how big of MK fans everyone involved was the reality seems much different, Instead it seems they only read the cliff notes on the lore and then decided to go fuck it, let's ruin everything. Characters had no build up or exposition, the settings were generic and boring, fights were lackluster, we got a new character that no one gives a shit about whose special power is literal plot armour. Goro is introduced, with absolutely no nod to the fact he is the MK champion to only die a minute later. Shang Sung had absolutely no presence on screen, Luo Kang was completely wasted. Film was just awfu.

I don't see how anyone that is a MK fan could think this mess passable. It wasted all its potential without a care at all.

MK was shot in my homeish town and I can guarantee nowhere they shot was generic. Hell they did a great job especially when out at the Flinders ranges.

Is this better or worse then the monster hunter movie?
I'm planning on watching this tonight but if it's worse i'll probably skip it.
Monster Hunter movie was so disrespectful to the franchise, it's a long time ago i watched a movie that bad.

i liked the movie, i think you know you cant judge games to movie to deep, because of the time it comes on as to narrow of story, which i expected.

not bad not good tbh. i feel like its right in the middle, i just wish they calm down o n the cgi characters

These sort of movies always make a huge mistake by bothering with all the irrelevant lore details - probably to satisfy those loudest of hardcore fans - at the expense of way more important details all movie makers should focus on: pacing, acting, character arcs, music, editing etc. etc.

I mean, name dropping Bo' Rai Cho; that was important instead of, I dunno, making a proper build-up to all the fights - especially Goro's?! Nikara, wtf was she doing in this reboot?! Thinking that Johnny Cage tease is a satisying ending? Not making whatshisface main character to become Scorpion himself instead of randomly waking him up from the dead? And I could go on.

I had high hopes but it's meh/10 unfortunatelly.

MAn, the movie was sooooo lame... The first 8min get me really curious and excited, but after that...

What a shame...

Any fan movie you can watch on youtube is way better than this garbage..

Ha BTW, the guy/girl responsible for Cole must be fired and cast away from movie industry ... I mean REALLY!

It was a very boring film for me, only the first 10 minutes was good, all down hill after that. Kano made me laugh of course.

That first fight with Scorpion in the forest was great, lots of wide shots with clear choreography and you can see what everyone else is doing. You would think the rest of the film was done by a different director because it uses a lot of close up shots and/or lots of editing. I read that the main actor has studied martial arts but you wouldn't think it when seeing how he moves in this film, definitely not world savior material.

The whole plot is stupid as well, especially with those markings that transfer to the killer. I know it's meant to show that the marking goes to the more stronger person but what if you kill a person with a marking by a sniper rifle? The person with the sniper rifle gets the marking, but that doesn't prove that they could beat the original person with martial arts. Then at the end Raiden says he'll find more warriors, I thought they already found all the warriors with the markings? Are they saying the markings no longer matter?

Stupid plot, boring characters and below par action scenes.

You can make a good movie that is not citizen kane level, thats why so many things are crap this days, people will accept anything whitout critical thinking, it seems that things cant be BAD anymore, everything has to be good because of reasons ....

The film was kinda alright and defenitely A LOT better than MK2...

People expecting a movie like Inception or Tarentino for Mortal Kombat are stupid.

That was not totally terrible at all, like some haters would say it.

The fights were very good and well made, this is by far the MK movie with the best combats.

Yeah tipical strawman arguments nowdays... you didnt like it because you are a hater and was expecting citizen kane ... no more valid critical points are allowed... everything must be good because of "muh feelings"

Mortal Kombat 2021 was totally enjoyable and watchable.

I didn't say to myself "Omg it's awful what am i watching ? I can't no more, i'm done..." Like it was the case with MK2 (Final Annihilation).

I think Mortal Kombat 2021 is a solid 13 or 14/20.

It's not totally awful, i've seen a lot more trash and disappointing movies by the past.

Like 8 Miles (loooool) "just for example ok ?", this movie was ass. Where were you all the haters this time ?

I like Kano and Kung Lao
I actually think Christopher Lambert was a better Raiden...
Yeah the original is better
Not sure about Smooth Jimmy Olsen from Supergirl TV show as Jax 😂
Also that ending, I thought
they didn't want a white hero
Added in because of backlash?

I thought the best part of this movie was the Flawless victory. And of course Kano.

Overall though it was a mediocre film and they never even had the tournament.

I didn't know Asians are "white" now

I have to disagree with the "It's MK, you can't expect a great film" argument.

There is plenty of meat on the bone for a capable studio, like Marvel, to knock it out of the park.
One of the main problems is that those involved try to reinvent the wheel when they take up the property...It doesn't need to be reinvented or remodeled.
Just take the original idea of a martial arts tournament on Tsung's hidden island, turn down the campiness, and build the world.
Have Reptile be seen briefly, in invisible form, watching a fight from a tree, but wait until the second movie to reveal him. It doesn't always have to be an immediate payoff and shouldn't be if you're building a world.
The sequel has a ton to chew on as well with Outworld, Khan, Lao, Mileena, Baraka, The Dead Pool, Khan's arena, etc.
I've always thought they could do a lot with showing the period relating to Khan's exterminaton squads. You could really do some great stuff showing his invasion of Earth.

Kano was ironically the only actor with some character development. It's a shame they flipped him so early, because before that, we actually get to see a glimpse of humility in him as he struggles to keep up with his persona.

A wasted potential IMO, it's one of those cases where the trailer was better than the actual full movie... Kano absolutely stole the show, the rest of the characters either tried too hard or didn't try at all, and that Reptile design/fight scene was absolutely awful, easily the lowest point of the movie, while Scorpion which is my favorite character is basically non-existent in the movie, the trailer already show most of it airtime. With that cliffhanger at the end I feel like they had a longer franchise in mind, losing focus on this particular release in the process.

Quite enjoyed it. Much better than Monster Hunter movie per say.
I don't expect a good storyline from either of them, but MK's actions are much better.
