Mortal Kombat First Look: Inside the R-rated Reboot

I remember when i commented on the first trailer, someone told me that movie has to take its own liberty die to how crappy video game stories are.
- if anyone played MKX or MK11, those were proper stories that could just as well if not better translate into a movie. Hell, the writing in the most recent 3 games is better than anything a movie tried. MK11 is literally a 3 hour Avengers movie.

Movie was fun, that's about it for me.

Everything about the protagonist was boring, that arc, his character, etc.

Some pretty solid highs, some beyond low lows. All the fight choreography talk was nonsense. I feel like the best we saw involved both Scorpion and Subzero.

In fact, they were the best parts of the movie to me.

I would've much rather had a film that solely revolved around them.

I read that Joe signed on for 4 more MK movies. So, uh, buckle up.

I'm still flabbergasted at how films can just slaughter video game material, lmao.

Bad writing, acting, pacing, animations, costumes and so on.

Still some fun moments, but watching this movie after the beginning intro is rather brutal.

I like that they tried remaining faithful to the series in some ways and had its own world building going on. But they never really spent any proper time building upon anything for any payoff.

Terrible movie. But definitely something that's targeted towards children despite its gruesome violence.

Kano stole every scene he was in, the dude was an absolute riot. He'd better be in the sequels if they're made. The writing and the actors delivery was gold.

My only real complaint is that I thought the last act was very very rushed. The movie took it's time, had fun, in the first 90min and then just crammed everything together at the end. Did a disservice to several characters and the prior pacing.

I didn't like the Scorpion vs Sub Zero fight for one reason: it became a 2v1. How's that fun? And the movie needed more Scorpion.

First 90-100min: 4.2/5 from me. Pure fun, good effects, very funny, so-so fight scenes.

Last 25min: 2/5.
 
Normally I hate all Marvel movies, recent Star Wars, etc. I like this one though. Maybe it was all the violence?

I think the fact I found it tolerable says a lot.
 
It seemed like the "get over here" line was adjusted a little in the release vs the trailer. I didn't like the sound of the trailer version.

How are the stories in Mortal Kombat, especially in the newer games?

Honestly my fighting game story experience is from Super Smash Brothers Brawl's Subspace Emissary, Skullgirls and Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
 
Mileena's booty was quite eye catching, big ol' thang swanging haha.

Movie is ok - the ending is just meh. Its worth a watch but not a buy.

2 decent fight scenes

A couple laughs from kano

Bad casting except for ninjas and Kano. Cosplay costuming on Shang Sung and Kabal. Bad fight music. 90s is superior in nearly every way.

When lu kang put his hand on kanos shoulder and he's like "the fuck" best part of movie

That was really really really bad. 1995 movie was no masterpiece, but great vibe, music, funny, good fights. MK: Annihilation - so bad it's funny. MK 2021? So fucking bad it's so not fucking funny.

Mileena was kinda cool though. That's it.

Didn't think it'd be worse than Annihilation.

Reallllly good. If you don't want to bother with the game, people compiled the whole thing on YT so you can watch it as a 3 hour movie and it flows perfectly because the actual in game fighting is just that, anything story wise is turned into a cutscene right after the fight so on YT you are getting a meaningful story. MKX as well, MK9 id say so but I cant remember that well but it was a great story reboot.
 
I hate the movie. what a waste of great talent Hiroyuki Sanada. So weak. even most of the effects are horrible. especially towards the end where the snow floor is clearly a carbet that moved as they walked on. don't want to spoil which part but towards the very end..

like sheesh man. 6 out of 10 max. the first one still the best.

also... isn't lame to bring a fighter to be the hero role when he was never in any mortal combat game? eh I don't like it and only watch it because you love bad movies.
 
It was okay to borderline disappointing. The plot, editing, and pacing was subpar. I think they should have kept it a little more grounded in reality for the first movie in order to save on the special effects budget. Make a solid first movie, secure more budget, then ramp up the special effects.

That depends, for me watching this movie ended up making constant comparisons with the original film which was wayyyy better despite being a cheesy flick at the end of the day. The casting was better, the characters were more memorable, the music was godlike in the original, the whole vibe of the tournament was better, even the fights were more enjoyable to watch despite no excessive brutality and no fatalities. MK 2021 is not a movie I'll love to rewatch once every few years to have some fun and good entertainment.

That was... uh... all over the place with a really meh ending. They could at least focused more on the fight scenes and not keep making quick cuts and bad stitching together of the action. Stay with a fight, move to the next. Or at least stay longer before you cut away and also keep consistency with the progress of a fight -- this was... just not tracking anything. Felt more like random fight scenes stitched together.

Some character deaths were way too abrupt, some fights ended up very quickly.

Bad pacing, bad writing, bad direction. A few actors did their best with what they got, so that made for some fun moments.

It is a b-movie and at times seems too aware of it --- but it still could do better.

Of course it is still far ahead of the second movie. But that isn't saying much.

The MK shorts have been way more interesting.

That thang was thangin'. Lawd have mercy.

But the movie overall was goofy. Didn't really feel like the characters had passion outside of Kano. Kano was top tier from beginning to end. I hated that they added captain random as he was not needed whatsoever. I'll give it a 7/10
 
i liked 1 thing from this movie..

sonya being a bad ass bitch.

the fighting scenes had way to many cuts srsly.. it was a bit annoying imo
 
The fighting scene between Liu Kang and Reptile from the first movie still looks brutal and badass and with great music to boot

Here they did Reptile dirty, just a cgi embarrassment

Yeah that was awful, they should've included "ninja-Reptile" and gave him a proper entrance like in the original film. Plus there would be potential to bring back the announcer's voice in the Director's Cut version. ;)
 
Kano, Scorpion, Sub Zero, Kabal, Kung Lao and Mileenas ass were enjoyable/good.

Cole is lame as fuck, mediocore actor, his literal plot armor and tonfas are trash abilities, kill him within 5 minutes of the sequel.

Henchmen all killed way too quick, Mileena did fuck all, Nitara who?

Shang Tsung, no presence, terrible wig.

Raiden, no presence, charisma, a total prick making dumb decisions. Lambert hamming it up was way more entertaining.

Many fights still terribly edited. Joe Taslim and Sawada know what they are doing, point the camera at them and let them go at it ffs.

''Dad do the uppercut'' really? How about letting Jax do the fucking uppercut IN THE PIT ARENA!

The first MK movie as a whole is still the best MK adaptation we got.
 
I feel it could've been way better had they turned this into a series instead of a film. The other route was cutting the amount of characters. Either option could've fixed the extreme rushing of scenes and illogical events.

However this still probably wouldn't have fixed the odd music, bad acting, OK ish fight scenes, weird camera shot selection, extreme quality fluctuation in special effects and bad casting. Aside from Sub-zero, Scorpion and possibly Kano, the cast is extremely sub-par.

The unfortunate thing is that this is clearly a passion project and at times really shows its enormous potential. But it's also clear as day that planning was a major obstacle.

If they turn this into a series and if all the things me and countless others have mentioned gets fixed then I'd say it can be extremely enjoyable while staying true to the series. But suffice it to say, these are very big ifs.

Edit: Also cut Cole, there is literally zero value to this character. Focusing on the other characters, its chemistry and how they come together would be a much better move in my personal opinion.

People who are saying the word amazing in a positive way regarding this film definitely drink a lot of soya milk..... This is a mediocre film at its best.

The end fight did not need to include cole making it a 2 on 1 it was completely pointless and made scorpion look weak, get out the way you fucking lame garbage character.

Kung Lao wouldn't lose so easily like that... And the humour was too cheesy.

Raiden is a gimp, Shang Tsung is breaking all the rules and he is just sat back watching like a pussy, Kick Shangs ass you fucking fake ass god...

I can imagine that they chose to do this because players have their own favorite characters. And it's very difficult to give each and every character the same amount of screen time and importance. Yet I don't feel adding in a shallow character and focusing on that character is the way to go either.
 
So it's not better than the first two films? Of course it isn't cause my boy Johnny Cage is not featuring it this time!

I might watch it after finishing Shadow and Bone which seems super cool!

First movie still the best. This new one is technically better than Annihalation, but isn't as fun of a watch so worse for me personally. xD
