Latest online related updates, more posted in the Online Kombat section.

September 23, 2011
Post 12,378 lists/details what was changed in the September 23, 2011 update/patch/hotfix.
  • This one apparently also fixes the desync issues some still experienced, caused by the preorder-retro costumes. (On the Xbox 360, PS3 version was already fixed in July) Originally, the solution was to re-download them; some got the problem solved that way, others didn't.

July 13, 2011
Post 11,610 lists/details each hotfix/patch released up to July 13, 2011.

July 8, 2011
PS3 patch is live. Make sure to download it, in order to avoid the desync issues. No word on a possible 360-patch to those still having the issue even after the solution they provided.

July 4, 2011
A patch to fix the desync of the PS3 online multiplayer, was announced for "this week". At the moment for Xbox 360 owners, there's no patch announced or even confirmed, just the "fix" that was posted earlier (i.e. download the retro costumes again).

June 25, 2011
Temporary solution for the desync issues of Xbox 360 owners found:
Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios has informed us that there is now a fix available for the desynchronization errors on the Xbox 360. In order to fix it, you need to manually re-download the Klassic Kostume DLC files from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

1. Hit the guide button (XBox Logo button on controller)
2. Go to the right to the tab labeled "settings"
3. Select "account management"
4. Select "Download history"
5. Select the pre-order skins and skin pack DLC and re-download.
6. Choose "download again"

We advise everyone to download the files again, and also spread the word to better the overall online experience. Fixed files are not available to download for the PlayStation 3. We will inform everyone when the PlayStation 3 version is ready.

June 22, 2011
• A fix (upcoming patch) it's in the works, to fix the desync-issues caused by the last patch. At the moment, the solution for some is to delete any retro-costume you downloaded that was from a code (like the preorder codes ,or the bluray-Jade code). If you downloaded the full retro-pack for $4.99 you'll be fine. But that also means that everyone needs to delete those downloads, so even if you delete them; if you're matched against someone that didn't you'll get a desync.

• New character Skarlet it's out. As the same game recommends, download the compatibility pack to be able to play against others that have her. The pack includes retro costumes for Cyrax and Sektor, based on their MK3 costumes.

June 15, 2011
• The patch that fixed the online netcode to reduce lag as much as possible...ended damaging some other aspects (desyncs, disconnects, etc.). The game per se plays better. Still, notes with updates and fixes will be added when the fix of that one is out.

NOTE: When you pause the game to check the list of special moves, fatalities, etc., commands change depending on were your character is facing. If your character is facing to the right, commands will appear listed as if you were doing it facing that way. So, if a movement starts with pressing back then forward, if you're on the right the command will be: Left and Right; if the character is on the left, the command will appear as Right + Left. Basically, see/read the commands as "back, front", not as "left, right")

(Remember you can use arcade/fightsticks. Also you can customize the setup. Remember you have to save the setup, and then choose it during the character select screen)

In the original games, Pressing Up + Start in The Pit-stages during specific matches, unlocked a secret. What does he does in this new one?...noone knows...yet.

LpICu.png

Each Kombatant has a unique selection of basic attacks in their arsenal. These attacks can be performed with the four primary attack buttons.

J0DIc.png

The primary attack buttons are designated as follows:
  • Front Punch (FP)
  • Back Punch (BP)
  • Front Kick (FK)
  • Back Kick (BK)
The button name describes the type of attack and the attacking limb.

GR8yY.png

The 5th primary button is the Block Button (Block).
This button can be held to protect yourself from incoming attacks. Standing Block will stop high attacks, Ducking Block will stop low attacks.

vZcXw.png

Additional attacks can be performed by pressing a direction and an attack button at the same time.

GfZFI.png

Some attacks will launch the opponent into the air, leaving them vulnerable to follow up attacks. Hitting your opponent while he is in the air is known as a Juggle Combo.

DKNho.png

Basic attacks can be strung together to perform combos. Combos cannot be blocked after the 1st hit lands.

kCNah.png

As with basic attacks, combos can also be modified. Pressing a direction and button at a certain point in a combo can yield a different result.

kRvn4.png

Each fighter also possesses a unique Throw attack. Throws are powerful attacks that cannot be blocked.

qJgM2.png

A well timed button press will allow you to escape a throw. Press (FP) or (FK) immediately upon being grabbed to break free.

BNy0o.png

Some characters, also have an Air Throw. These function as a normal throw, but only work when both fighters are in the air.

XuCtI.png

Special Moves are more powerful than basic attacks and have their own special properties. Some Special Moves require expert timing to be effective (Like Nightwolf's 'Reflect'). Other Special Moves are purely defensive (like Reptile's 'Invisibility').

czUqv.png

oW77T.png

The Super Meter is a powerful tool that can be used to shift the tide of battle by unleashing devastating attacks or providing a means to escape punishment.

The meter is split into 3 sections that fill during the course of a match. Performing a Special Move, having an attack blocked, or taking damage all award some amount of meter. When at least 1 section of meter is full, you are able to spend it on a special ability.

  1. 1HO93.png

With 1 section of meter filled you are able to Enhance any of your Special Moves to augment their properties. This is done by performing the Special Move input and pressing (Block) at the same time.

  2. 2PG4a.png

Breakers expend 2 levels of meter and are used to interrupt a combo. After the first hit of a combo connects, press: Forward + Block.

  3. Gj7fQ.png

When the Super Meter is completely full you have access to a fighter's X-Ray Attack. Some characters (like Johnny Cage), their attack is initiated by a counter, so the opponents needs to hit you to start it. It may not always be the best strategy to save up for an X-Ray. X-Ray Attacks can be evaded and blocked.

MheQn.png

In a Tag Team match*, you are able to swap positions with your tag partner at any time by pressing the Tag button (or BP + BK).

aJ0DR.png

By using one bar of your Super Meter, you are able to swap in your teammate while performing an attack! Tag Swap Attacks are great for extending or punctuating the end of combos.

z81ab.png

You can also use one bar of your Super Meter to perform a Tag Assist. A Tag Assist will call in your partner to execute a Special Attack, after which they will leave the arena.

tUCDh.png

You can also tag in your partner during specific combos! This uses no meter, but does require skill and timing.

*Matches can be played both offline and online, or a combination of both (2 people in one console can compete against 2 other people online). Up to 4 individual people can play.

PATCHES/FIXES-NOTES
(Thanks to Testyourmight.com and Netherrealm.com)
[Patch notes are usually posted on this thread at the official forums -need an account-]

May 20, 2011
• Reduced some of Kung Lao’s combo and overall damage.
• Reduced the damage on some special moves.
• Increased the damage scaling after Kitana’s Enhanced ground fan toss.
• Adjusted some juggle’s damage scaling.
• Reduced the damage on some basic combos that were doing too much damage without using any meter.
• Increased Sheeva’s damage output for several of her moves and attacks.
• Temporarily Changed around some of Sonya’s fighting style properties to reduce her ability to lock someone down in block stun.
• Changed Kano’s Towards (Forward + Front Kick) to a low block.
• Reduced the recovery on Kano’s Upball to be closer to Johnny Cage’s Flip Kick recovery.
• Increased the damage of some of Baraka’s special moves and attacks.
• It is easy to juggle combo after hitting someone with Baraka’s chopchop on the ground.
• Increased the damage scaling on a frozen opponent.
• Baraka’s Away (Back + Front Kick + Front Punch) combo is now a true popup.
• Reduced some of Reptile's combo damage.

REMEMBER:
  • Online multiplayer requires an 'Online Pass', which is included in every new copy at no additional charge
  • If your copy is from a friend, rented, used and there's no online pass; there's a trial period of 2 days.
  • Once you're online, the game will generate an unique web-kode. By entering your unique web kode at TheMortalKombat.com you can utilize advanced community features such as social messaging and website profiles
  • Disconnecting/quitting during a match will affect your stats and your TrueSkill Ranking

To make things easier for some, if you want to add or look for others kombatants, go to this Google Spreadsheet to add/edit your information. As the information can be seen and edited by others; make sure to every few days check that like to see if things are alright.

That spreadsheet, lets you add your PSN/Live usernames and see others (gotta love technology right?!)

Just select a box and write the information on the respective area. Colors, etc. leave them to me. And also remember to File > Save after you're finished editing/adding your info.

If you want to look into other GAFers playing the game, discuss about things you notice while playing online, talk about that spammer you seem to always get stuck, quality of the online experience, and so on...you're open to do so on this thread. Be friendly too, in the end..this is just to have fun and enjoy the game.

LOL another PS3 exclusive feature?...Read!!

NOTE: AS OF MAY 2011, I NO LONGER HAVE A PS3. SO I WON'T BE ABLE TO ACCEPT FRIEND REQUESTS OR CHAT INVITES, BUT OTHERS USERS LISTED BELOW CAN DO SO, IF NEEDED. CHECK FOR THEIR PSN-IDS ON THE SPREADSHEET; JUST IN CASE.

To make it easier, in case you want to jump online and see which other GAFers are playing online (in the PS3 version); and to communicate with fellow gamers. Keep in mind that this is a text chat (no headset/voice, keyboard optional) and it's separate from the actual in-game chat and in-game lobbies. (gossip time!!)

How you can enter? Well, you need to be invited by someone and only people in your friends' list can invite others. So here's how it goes:

  • Add someone as a friend. (check from members posted below. Look for the PSNIDs on the spreadsheet above and at the bottom if this post). As more people join (and don't delete) the chat, they will also be able to invite others to join. So I'll keep adding people to the list of "users with GAF-chat" below.
  • Once accepted as a friend (or in the message field with the friend request); let the person know you want to join the chat. The chat's name is 'Mortal Kombat vs NeoGAF'.
  • Keep an eye out for the invitation and accept it the same way you accept/read messages from other users. (In you Friends' List) Accept the invitation and join and start talki..ehr..typing!
  • The chat will be located on your Friends' List, at the top (see icon below). It will stay there as long as you don't 'delete it'; so just open it, join and see what are other people doing. Leave, then come back later, rinse and repeat.
KXy3Q.png
  • While not in-game, you'll only see the chat-window.(like the one below but with colors and typos and lots of "lols")
qufoZ.png
  • In-game, you'll see notifications (see below) of people talking at the top of the screen, like when you unlock trophies, receive messages, etc.
Gv2XW.png
  • To reply, you just open the XMB, choose the chat and type.
  • Remember that in online games (and other general games) the action is not stopped/paused when you're at the XMB/chat, so keep that in mind.

Other users with GAF-chat:
  • Xevren
  • Irish
  • TheHakku
  • xero273
  • Aesthet1c
  • Ribbon
  • MrMephistoX
  • corrosivefrost
  • TeknomanEX

Misc. notes about GAF-chat:
  • If you, after quitting Mortal Kombat decide to play another game; as long as you're online, you're going to receive notifications of messages. To avoid this, you have to either turn off notifications, or 'leave' the chat (by pressing the 'Triangle button' over the chat and choosing said option).
  • If you 'delete' a chat, you'll have to ask someone in your friend-list that is in the chat, to send you another invite (the option to 'delete' is also obtained by pressing the 'Triangle button' over the name of the chat).
  • As long as you don't 'delete' the chat, you can leave and return at any moment. That way, you can see if others are also playing and easily join them (no need to search this thread to ask if someone is specifically playing online)
  • If you're in the chat and press circle multiple times to exit to the XMB, and then press the 'PS guide button' to exit to the game... To continue chatting, you need to go to the XMB and choose the chat (icon) again. (You're still going to receive notifications every time someone posts a message; if you have notifications turned on)
  • If you're in the chat and press the 'PS guide button' to exit and continue playing the game. Pressing it again will bring you to the chat-window directly.
  • If all users delete a room, then it's just a matter of creating a new room. So if one day you want to join and says the chat-room doesn't exists, then either wait for a new one to be created, look around this thread for info of such thing, or create a new one and post about it here.

To make things easier for fellow Xbox Live users. In case you can't (or don't want to :p) add other members to your friends list. Just:

  1. Add MKvsGAF to your Friends List.
  2. Go to the profile of MKvsGAF and choose 'View Friends'
  3. There, it will show a list of other members from GAF (that added MkvsGAF too); so just proceed to send game invites, or talk to, etc.
  4. I check that gamertag every 2-3 days, so if you're not accepted immediately; don't worry you will be accepted. ;)

Devoid of conscience or remorse, Mileena will butcher anyone to appease her beloved father.

From the depths of hell, to the highest building in the United States. Once a simple tournament; but when the rules are broken, there's no place to hide. And the only way to survive; is to fight.

For nearly two decades, Mortal Kombat has been known mostly as a fighting game. But there has been experiments and some multimedia ventures that expanded the universe and establish the franchise.

giRpu.png

CupAi.png

The first adventure-game and the only one that had any connection to the overall story of the games. Story was about (the older brother) Sub-Zero as he's sent on a mission to retrieve the location of a map, that had the location of a treasure the ones that contacted the Lin Kuei were looking for.

It combined the 2D/digitized actors look that the series was well known for, with 3D backgrounds. Gameplay was similar to the fighting games, with the addition of levels and experience points that unlocked Sub-Zero's moves as you advanced. It also had live-acted movies that helped progress the game and the story.

The game received average reviews, criticism for the way it controlled (basically the same as the fighting games, but with an extra button to change stance/direction the character was looking forward); so you had to manually change his direction depending on the direction enemies were coming from.

THSc5.png

The second of the adventure games, only released on the PlayStation. Originally, it was going to be a 3D adventure game that had you in the roles of Jax and Sonya, in one of their missions to take down Kano's Black Dragon clan. But internal problems during development, that caused even a few members of the team to left Midway, like John Tobias and a few changes caused the final game not only to be different to what was planned, but overall quality was just not there.

The final release featured only Jax as you controlled him in top/down perspective, through sewers, buildings and rooms destroying waves of enemies. Story was nearly non-existent, and barely had any connection to the rest of the games. Basically Kano frees a bunch of members from his clan from jail, killing a few of Jax comrades along the way and Jax has to stop him.

AI was all over the place, no variety in anything. The only good thing many found in this game was the introduction of an "orange ninja" called Tremor. The overall problems while making the game, bad sales and horrible quality of the game, made many thought it would be the end of the non-fighting MK games and the end of Mortal Kombat as a franchise.

41kWX.png

Paradox had an idea for a game titled 'Monks', which was similar to God of War, but with the added mythology and aspects from martial arts. They pitched the idea to a few publishers, but none were interested; except Ed Boon from Midway. It was a big bet, but it also fit with Midway's plan for releasing a new MK game every year.

The game was a retelling of the events between the end of the first fighting game and during the second. The chosen warriors from Earthrealm win the tournament, but as the ceremony's taking place tarkatan hordes from Outwrold invade Liu Kang's home. Forcing Liu Kang, Kung lao and other chosen warriors to travel to Outworld and defeat Shao Kahn to avenge what happened.

Game received a good amount of praise because not only how well it played with a multi-direction combat system, two players cooperative modes, a good amount of content from picture, galleries, different modes and an emulated port of the arcade version of MKII; on top of fitting right in with the franchise. It served to show that when done well, Mortal Kombat can also be released on different genres.

A PSP-port and a PS3/360-sequel were planned, but cancelled because of the problems at Midway. Though possibilities of a sequel are still there.

A Mortal Kombat crossover? With comic book characters? The idea may have sounded crazy. Even members of this forum laughed at the idea when habeem4999 posted about it on July 2005. But it was truth. During the release of Armageddon and release of the newer-generation consoles. The team was planning to take the series back to it's origins. A grittier look, violence, no goofy aspects, no Puzzle Kombat, just a more traditional fighting game.

But when the team were asked and told about the idea, they jumped on it. The characters from DC Universe were well known, and if done right it could benefit both side. The game was a more traditional fighter, compared to the previous spinoffs and 11 characters from each side.

The game was well accepted because the fighting was more balanced than the previous 3D games. It also had a story mode that had you playing from both sides and see the story unfold; while playing/fighting in traditional matches (instead of adventures/exploration games like the ones Deception and Armageddon had). But it received criticism for the toned down violence (in order to allow the DC charatcers, they could'nt be dismembered or torn to pieces), blood was minimal. Character selection for many was small and the promises of downloadable content were unfulfilled.

Midway went to bankruptcy a little after the release of the game, and sold the Mortal Kombat franchise and the development team to Warner Bros.

An animated movie, that served as a prequel of sorts to the first feature film. It explained some of the origins of the characters. featured hand-drawn animation for the regular story and 3D-polygon-rendered characters for the fights. It also included a making of featurette of the feature film.

2AgMM.png

Trailer

The first movie based on a videogame that was accepted and received general praise for staying close to the source material.

After running away to the US to avoid having any participation in the tournament, Liu Kang returns to China after his brother was killed by the sorcerer Shang Tsung; while trying to follow on his footsteps and enter the tournament. Fueled by vengeance, Liu Kang accepts the invitation to the tournament, guided by the god of thunder Raiden. But as he soon would learn, revenge leads nowhere. And there are bigger things at stake than just avenging his brother's death.

The film was a box office success that helped to establish the MK franchise in the general public. With a sequel fast-tracked for released, to cash-in on the success of the first.

BKRom.png

Trailer

Trying to get the sequel out as soon as possible, New Line Cinema and Threshold Entertainment rushed a sequel to the 1995 release; and started right when the first movie ended.

A furious Shao Kahn invades the Earthrealm after Shang Tsung's defeat in the tournament. He resurrects his late Queen Sindel, in order to obtain the Earth by force, rather than by the rules. After suffering a big loss early on, all they know is that they have 6 days to find survivors of the invasion across the Earth and stop Shao Kahn; but loyalties and friendship will be tested and noone may be who they thought they were.

The film had a lot of characters, was badly edited, and had a script that it was obvious thing were cut off as they made the movie to maintain the budget; among many other problems (horrible visual effects even for 1997, bad costume designs and so on) all made sure that the movie would under-perform at the box-office obtaining less than half of what the original did.

There were always plans for a third movie, even at one point set to start filming under the name 'Mortal Kombat Devastation'. But all plans were scrapped and the possibilities of a new movie are still in the air.

The Mortal Kombat comic books series included the official comics by Midway and a licensed adaptation series by Malibu Comics, published between October 1994 and August 1995. There are thus two different lineups of Mortal Kombat comics: the tie-ins published by Midway that closely followed the storyline of the games, and the Malibu series, which took a few liberties with the source material. The ones published by Midway were only available through special mail-orders or with purchases of specific games.

Here's a election of some of them:
Comics published by Midway
  • Mortal Kombat Collector's Edition
  • Mortal Kombat II Collector's Edition
  • Mortal Kombat 4 Limited Edition
  • Mortal Kombat: Deception Limited Edition
  • Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe: Beginnings

Comics published by Malibu
  • Character specials (Baraka: Babality, Kung Lao: Rising Son, Kitana & Mileena: Sister Act)
  • Mortal Kombat: Battlewave
  • Mortal Kombat: Blood & Thunder
  • Mortal Kombat: Goro, Prince of Pain
  • Mortal Kombat: Raiden & Kano
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition
  • Mortal Kombat: U.S. Special Forces

Intro of the series and the first minutes of the first episode.

An animated series, that only lasted one season. It plan was supposed to be a bridge between the first and (back then possible) second movie. Story dealt around the earth portals weakening and this allowing warriors, creatures and entities fro mother realms to travel freely to the Earth. Raiden and his chosen warriors create a team that dedicates to travel to this portals and close them, to maintain balance; while looking for ways to stop Shao Kahn's invasion.

Bad animation, the addition to technology like airships and mega computes on top of Nightwolf being turned into a computer expert all caused the series to not be well received by many.

Episodes:
  1. Kombat Begins Again
  2. Sting of the Scorpion
  3. Acid Tongue
  4. Skin Deep
  5. Old Friends Never Die
  6. Familiar Red
  7. Fall from Grace
  8. The Secret of Quan-Chi
  9. Resurrection

  11. Amends
  12. Abandoned
  13. Overthrown

5JiDN.png

A live-action series that was a prequel to the full-feature films; that focused on the origins of the original/Great Kung Lao.

Originally titled 'Mortal Kombat Krusades', story dealt about Kung Lao's life after defeating Shang Tsung in the tournament. This granted him eternal youth, until the next tournament as he trained new warriors to take his place. A "gift" that he didn't wanted, because it meant seeing the ones he loved and cared grew old and even die. But Shang Tsung had other plans to try to lure Kung Lao into death and become champion of the tournament again. So Kung Lao travels around, meeting new friends, new enemies and learning more about his and other realms; while having nightmares of his eventual demise by a 4-handed creature.

The series felt and looked a lot like popular series around the same time 'Xena The Warrior Princess' and 'Hercules The Legendary Journeys'. It had cameos and episodes focused on characters many knew, good action, good story, good special effects; but it only lasted one season, even ending with a cliffhanger were every character died and was killed by Shao Kahn (this was going to be solved in season #2 by the Elder Gods appearing and undoing what Shao Kahn did).

What happened? The success of the series, caused the overall costs to rise. Threshold was faced with only two options: continue with the series and never make a third movie (which they needed and wanted to make to clean their name and the franchise); or stop the series and proceed to work on the third film. They chose the movie, so the series was cancelled.

Episodes:
  1. Warrior Eternal: Part 1
  2. Warrior Eternal: Part 2
  3. Cold Reality
  4. Immortal Kombat
  5. The Essence
  6. Noob Saibot
  7. Debt of the Dragon
  8. Undying Dream
  9. Quan Chi.
  10. Unholy Alliance
  11. Thicker Than Blood
  12. Shadow of a Doubt
  13. Twisted Truths
  14. Festival of Death
  15. The Serpent and the Ice
  16. Kreeya
  17. The Master
  18. In Kold Blood
  19. Flawed Victory
  20. Balance of Power
  21. Stolen Lies
  22. Vengeance

In 2010, director Kevin Tancharoen a long time fan of the MK games, made a short movie along with a few friends; with an idea that he had in mind, to reboot the movies; a rebirth of sorts. The newest game hasn't been revealed, rumors were flying around; and he was just doing it for fun. So they all got and did it; for around $7,000.

Kevin, doesn't have a lot of experience with YouTube and he wanted to show the clip to a few close friends, but that lived quite far. So he proceeded to upload the clip and give the apparently "private link" to people on his friends list. Thinking that the video was private, only those that had him as a friend could actually watch it. As he later found out, he missed the options to put it fully private and the video went viral over the internet. Scared at first, he realized that in the worst case scenario people would just hate it, forget about it and ..well, only crush his dream of eventually working on it.

But people in general liked the video, WB and Netherrealm studios got to see it too, and they liked it too. What followed were meetings, exchanges and brain storming sessions; while Kevin Tancharoen was just happy to to meet Ed Boon.

And it was agreed that he would get to work and make a 9 episodes long series; up to 10 minutes each. Each episode focusing on individual aspects and characters of the franchise, along with their origins.

Mortal Kombat Legacy debuts April 12 on Machinima.

Series will be released on digital form (Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, iTunes) and on Blu-ray on Fall 2011.

Kharacters: Kano, Liu Kang, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Goro, Shang Tsung [Hidden: Reptile]

Goro lives...
A 2,000 year old half human dragon Goro remains undefeated for the past 500 years. He won the title of grand champion by defeating Kung Lao, a shaolin fighting monk. It was during this period that the tournament fell into Shang Tsung's hands and was corrupted.
Key Points:
  • Shang Tsung's 10th tournament takes place on his island. With 9 consecutive victories, this is the Earthrealm's last chance against a possible invasion by the emperor of Outworld; Shao Kahn.
  • Kung Lao's descendant, Liu Kang participates in this tournament; also becoming the youngest fighter in the history of it.
  • Raiden, the god of thunder and lightning receives a personal invitation from Shang Tsung. Suspicious for the reasons, he assumes a more human form and accepts; to keep an eye on things.
  • Johnny Cage enters the tournament looking for fame and acceptance against those that think he's a fake.
  • Kano, a criminal and member of the Black Dragon joins the tournament after hearing rumors about treasures to loot and the walls of Shang Tsung's Palace being made of gold.

  • Sonya Blade, a lieutenant from the US Special Forces follows a long time rival and criminal named Kano into the tournament.
  • Sub-Zero participates in the tournament in representation of the Lin Kuei, but with a mission: to kill Shang Tsung and get a hold of his treasures. He gets killed by Scorpion, a member of a rival clan (the Shirai Ryu) who was returned to life as a specter to avenge his death, the death of his clan and also his wife and son; by Sub-Zero's hands.
  • After being undefeated for 500 years and killing his ancestor, Liu Kang defeats Goro but doesn't kill him. Fearing a possible revenge for his failure, Goro goes into hiding.
  • Liu Kang defeats Shang Tsung, but lets him live. This grants the Earthrealm a victory in the tournament.
  • Victory also grants Liu Kang one gift: he won't age until the next (official) tournament; though he can die. He will use that time to look and train new warriors to (possibly) take his place.

Kharacters: Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Jax, Shang Tsung, Reptile, Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, Kintaro, Shao Kahn [Hidden: Jade, Noob Saibot, Smoke]

500 years ago, Shang Tsung was banished to the Earth Realm. With the aid of Goro he was to unbalance the furies and doom the planet to a chaotic existence. By seizing control of the shaolin tournament he tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only seven warriors survived the battles and Shang Tsung's scheme would come to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang.

Facing execution for his failure and the apparent death of Goro, Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to grant him a second chance. Shang Tsung's new plan is to lure his enemies to compete in the Outworld where they will meet certain death by Shao Kahn himself.
Key Points:
  • After being defeated, Shang Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to give him a second chance to redeem himself. Knowing that invitations to the tournament can't be declined, they decide to create a tournament, but in Outworld were the fighters could face inevitable death by Shao Kahn himself.
  • Shao Kahn restores Shang Tsung's youth as part of the agreement.
  • Convinced that Liu Kang wasn't going to travel to Outworld on his own terms, a Tarkatan horde is sent to the Shaolin temples to kill everyone. Liu Kang arrives from the previous tournament, to find his brothers and friends dead. He travels to Outworld to learn more about the reasons and get revenge. He's joined by Kung Lao, a fellow monk and member of the White Lotus Society.
  • Johnny Cage follows Liu Kang into Outworld, after seeing what happened in the temples.
  • Close to capture him, Sonya follows Kano into the Outworld; were they're both captured and then imprisoned by Shao Kahn. This causes her superior, Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs to lose contact with Sonya and he travels to her last known location to learn more about here whereabouts.

  • Scorpion learns about the sudden appearance of Sub-Zero; which he thought he killed in the previous tournament. He learns that he's traveling to Outworld, and decides to follow him to put an end to his life once and for all.
  • Suspicious at the creation of the new tournament, Raiden also travels to Outworld to aid the other fighters.
  • During the tournament, Shao Kahn uses his own daughters Kitana and Mileena, as personal bodyguards and assassins, to kill anyone from the Earthrealm.
  • After following him, Scorpion watches Sub-Zero spare the life of an opponent; which causes the suspicion of Scorpion. He learns that the Sub-Zero he was following, is not the one he actually killed; but his younger brother who traveled to Outworld after being sent by the Lin Kuei to know about the fate of his brother. Scorpion decides to become Sub-Zero's protector, to amend for his mistake and the assassination of his brother.
  • Kitana was suspicious of her father through the years and maintained contact with outsiders to learn more about him, but kept doing his bidding. During the tournament, she learns that Shao Kahn's is not her real father, but the one that killed her parents; which were the rulers of Edenia. Edenia was paradise, populated by a race of half-mortals, half-gods; which granted the ability to them of growing older at a slower pace; same reason they could live for thousands of years. Edenia was invaded by Shao Kahn, after losing 10 tournaments and merged with Outworld.

  • Kitana also learns that Mileena is not her twin sister, but a clone created by Shang Tsung for Shao Kahn. Mixing Kitana's blood with tarkatan's essence, Shang Tsung created a clone of Kitana to be always loyal to him. In the event Kitana discovered the truth, they would kill Kitana, make Mileena assume the role of princess of Edenia; so the Elder Gods wouldn't be suspicious of Shao Kahn since he needed the rightful heir to the throne in his side to continue with the merge.
  • Kitana kills Mileena and helps the other fighters from Earth, so they can avoid what happened to Edenia. Liu Kang defeats both Kintaro and Shao Kahn, but learns a shocking truth by doing so...

You have been chosen to represent Earth in Mortal Kombat. Be warned. Although your souls are protected against Shao Kahn's evil; your lives are not. I cannot interfere any longer as your Earth is now ruled by the Outworld Gods.
-These are the words of Raiden.

For centuries Earth has used Mortal Kombat to defend itself against the Outworld's Emperor Shao Kahn. But, Kahn becomes frustrated by failed attempts at taking Earth through tournament battle. He enacts a plan which began 10,000 years ago. During this time Kahn had a Queen. Her name was Sindel and her young death was unexpected. Kahn's Shadow priests, lead by Shang Tsung, make it so Sindel's spirit would someday be reborn: Not on the Outworld but on the Earth Realm itself. This unholy act gives Shao Kahn to step through the dimensional gates and reclaim his Queen. Thus enabling him to finally seize the Earth Realm...

Key Points:
  • ...the tournament Liu Kan just won, was a diversion. There was no real tournament, but a way to keep the warriors occupied, while Shao Kahn initiated a plan that was started thousands of years ago.
  • Plan consisted of burying Sindel, Shao Kahn's wife and late queen in Earth, so that one day; if needed, Kahn could invade the Earth to reclaim his queen.
  • Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Kung Lao escape from Outworld, and try to get ready for the upcoming invasion.
  • Jax frees Sonya from Outworld. Kano escapes. Jax and Sonya go back to Earth and try to warn their superiors about the upcoming invasion, but fail. Jax gets cybernetic implants on both his arms to be ready to fight.

  • Shao Kahn appoints the race of Centaurians, a race of half-human, half-horses to command his extermination squads, led by Motaro. This caused the four-armed Shokans to be careful against Shao Kahn, after centuries of loyalty and he siding with their sworn enemies. Sheeva, a Shokan loyal to Shao Kahn, that served of protector of Queen Sindel takes notice of this and questions their loyalty to Shao Kahn, when his siding with their enemies.
  • The Lin Kuei starts a program to turn their best warriors, into cyborgs: Sub-Zero, Smoke, Cyrax and Sektor are chosen for this.
  • Sub-Zero and Smoke decline to be part of it, and decide to escape. They are marked for death for this betrayal; but Smoke gets captured eventually and turned into a cyborg. Sub-Zero continues on his own to help the fellow fighters from the Earthrealm to defeat Shao Kahn.
  • The earth is invaded; the souls of everyone on Earth are taken by Shao Kahn, except those of the chosen fighters. Shao Kahn's exterminations squads are focused on killing this warriors and most importantly, Liu Kang.
  • Raiden can't participate, because of the merger of Outworld and Earth. The Elder Gods can't interfere, because in their eyes, Shao Kahn was not breaking any rules. They do decide to protect the souls of the warriors they've chosen to defend the Earth, so they have a chance to fight; this won't protect their lives.

  • Johnny Cage is killed by the extermination squads. Because of the invasion, his soul can't ascend to the heavens, so he helps his friends knowing that he will disappear when Shao Kahn is defeated. (Note: This event is added in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Trilogy has the same story as MK3/Ultimate, but added the characters from previous games, that were missing from Ultimate)
  • Being free during the invasion, Scorpion walks between Earth and hell watching the events. He's not loyal to any side, but decides to fight along Shao Kahn. This alliance of sorts, is broken when Scorpion learns that Sub-Zero, which he sworn to protect; is fighting with the other side; he decides to help Sub-Zero and his plan to stop Shao Kahn.
  • With the portals open, a fallen Elder God named Shinnok, sends a loyal servant under the name of Noob Saibot to spy on the warriors by joining their fight.
  • Kitana is accused of treason by the courts in Outworld for the apparent death of her twin sister Mileena and her rebellion against Shao Kahn. Knowing they wouldn't give her a proper trial, the sudden resurrection of the Queen Sindel and the current invasion of the Earth, she escapes to help her friends. Knowing that if they defeat Shao Kahn, it would also free her home, Edenia and expose the truth.
  • After her escape, Shao Kahn appoints two warriors to get her back: his loyal Reptile, the lone survivor of the race of Saurians, from planet Zaterra, with incredible stealth abilities, vicious fighting skills; and Jade, Kitana's longtime friend also from Edenia; forced to be loyal to her emperor.

  • Mileena is resurrected. She assumes it was Shao Kahn, and continues with her loyalty towards her father and use her ability to read Kitana's mind to help Shao Kahn during the invasion.
  • Sub-Zero (protected by Scorpion) gets attacked by the cyber-ninja Smoke. Still with some traces of soul and feelings towards his friend, Smoke doesn't fight Sub-Zero; letting him to be reprogrammed and continue of their quest to stop the invasion.
  • Kitana finds the Queen Sindel and exposes the truth to her. Sindel was just a pawn in Shao Kahn's game, buried on Earth with the only purpose to serve as a way to obtain the Earth by force. She explains Sindel was the ruler of the realm known as Edenia, along with her King Jerrod. But Jerrod was killed during the Mortal Kombat tournament by Shao Kahn and took the young queen Sindel by force along with Edenia; with Sindel latter committing suicide. That Jerrod and Sindel had a daughter, named Kitana.
  • Knowing the truth, Sindel joins Kitana and the fellow fighters in the battle against Shao Kahn. Jade decides to no longer be loyal to Shao Kahn, since the actual queen returned, also joining the fight.
  • Sonya and Jax defeat Kano, but spare his life. He manages to escape, but is imprisoned by Shao Kahn.
  • Sheeva defeats Motaro and leaves him to die and watch the rise of Shokans over the Centaurians, proceeds to kill Shao Kahn. An imprisoned Kano watches and offers Sheeva help to defeat Shao Kahn. Kano's intention was to inform Shao Kahn of Sheeva's plan. Shao Kahn stabs Sheeva and leaves her to die. Kano offers his loyalty to Shao Kahn.

  • Liu Kang and Kung Lao face Shao Kahn. Kung Lao is badly injured during the battle and presumed dead. Liu Kang defeats Shao Kahn, setting the captured souls free. Also freeing the Earth and Edenia from Outworld.
  • With the help of Smoke, Sub-Zero fights Cyrax and puts him in a desert-sand prison. He later is engaged by Sektor, but manages to defeat him. Scorpion returns to the Netherrealm. Sub-Zero returns to the Lin Kuei, only to find that the clan was disbanded.
  • Kitana and Sindel go back to the, now free Edenia, to rule again and try to establish balance now that the menace of Shao Kahn is over.
  • Liu Kang goes back to China and tries to reform the Shaolin Temple.

Kharacters: Sonya, Jax, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Reiko, Jarek, Raiden, Tanya, Scorpion, Kai, Reptile, Shinnok, Quan Chi, Fujin, Noob Saibot, Goro, (Gold: Cyrax, Mileena, Kitana, Kung Lao, Baraka, Sektor) [Hidden: Meat]

Thousands of years ago in a battle with the fallen elder god known as Shinnok, I was responsible for the death of an entire civilization. To rid all realms of Shinnok's menace I waged a war that plunged the earth into centuries of darkness and banished Shinnok to a place called the Netherealm.

Now after Shao Kahn's defeat at the hands of the earth warriors, Shinnok has managed to escape his confines of the Netherealm.
The war is now being fought once again, and this time it can be won by mortals.

Key Points:
  • Shinnok was an Elder God, that was seduced by ambition and more power; even more after the creation of the Earth. He wanted that realm for himself and decides to face Raiden who was recently appointed as protector of it to obtain it. The aftermath results on the near destruction of the Earth, but as the Elder Gods learn about Shinnok's motivation, they vanish him to the Netherrealm to be tormented and tortured by Lucifer for thousands of years.
  • Raiden discovers that Shinnok traveled to Earth without detection, using an amulet that could only be created once.
  • Raiden buries this amulet in Nepal, creates temples across the Himalayan Mountains and assigns protectors to it based on four of the elements of life; one of them being the god of wind Fujin.
  • In the Netherrealm, Shinnok meets a sorcerer named Quan Chi, who could freely walk through the realms without detection. They made an agreement: Quan Chi would help him dethrone Lucifer in the Netherralm, in exchange for more power and to rule to his side, once Shinnok was free.
  • Quan Chi and Shinnok dethrone Lucifer. With time, they tried to make and create life on it, and mold it based on what Shinnok saw on his time in Earth; but couldn't. The Netherrealm was never a realm meant for life, so as much as he tried or wanted, he couldn't change it. He needed his amulet to obtain want he wanted; the Earth.

  • They learn that when Goro killed the original Kung Lao in the Mortal Kombat tournament, Shang Tsung obtained his soul and his memories. This granted Shang Tsung with the knowledge of the Map of the Elements, which indicated the location of the amulet.
  • Shang Tsung made an agreement with Shinnok and Quan Chi. He would tell them the location of the map, which would lead them to the amulet; in exchange for the knowledge of thee dark arts that Shang Tsung needed to initiate the plan to resurrect Queen Sindel in Earth, if it was needed.
  • Quan Chi couldn't walk freely in to the Earth and obtain the map, since it was protected by gods of the four elements. He hires two ninjas to obtain it: a Lin Kuei ninja codenamed Sub-Zero, and a member from their rival clan the Shirai Ryu named Hanzo Hasashi.
  • During the mission, Sub-Zero learns about a rival ninja doing the same mission. He kills Hasashi even though he asked for mercy and obtains the map.
  • Sub-Zero delivers the map to Quan Chi and he does what he agreed with the Lin Kuei headmasters: to destroy and erase the Shirai Ryu and not leave any survivors of it.

  • Quan Chi and Shinnok hire Sub-Zero again, this time to use the map he originally got and retrieve the amulet. Sub-Zero defeats the four gods and retrieves the amulet, only to give it to Quan Chi were he reveals that the amulet was not a treasure meant to be found, but belonged to Shinnok and it served to let him walk freely across the realms.
  • Raiden demands Sub-Zero to rectify his doing, and sends him to the Netherrealm, were he meets a member of the Brotherhood of Shadows named Sareena. He also meets again with Hasashi, who refers to himself as Scorpion (the codename he was given under the Shirai Ryu) and accuses Sub-Zero of not only killing him, but his clan, wife and son.
  • Sub-Zero escapes. With the help of Sareena defeat Quan Chi, but let him live. Shinnok attacks Sareena and sends her to a lower plan of the Netherrealm. Sub-Zero obtains the amulet from Shinnok, and escapes through a portal that Raiden created. He returns the amulet to Raiden, but Raiden warns him that he was not supposed to easily enter the Netherrealm, that only people with darkness in their souls could enter. He advises to Sub-Zero, that there's still time to change things and avoid ending there.
  • Raiden discovers that the amulet they acquired from Shinnok was a duplicate that Quan Chi created and gave to Shinnok and that Quan Chi still has the original amulet.
  • Sub-Zero receives an invitation to the Mortal Kombat tournament.

  • After Liu Kang defeated Shao Kahn and stopped the invasion. Kitana and Sindel were on Edenia trying to put things in balance again after centuries of Shao Kahn's tyranny. Reptile's brought and accused for genocide, and is exiled to the Netherrealm for his acts and services to Shao Kahn. Kitana tries to get a truce between the Shokans and the Centaurians; she discovers that Goro was alive.
  • Liu Kang travels to America, searching for warriors to train. While searching, he meets with an old friend and fellow monk; Kai. They both return to China to train and continue rebuilding the temples.
  • Kung Lao prefers to let everyone assume he's dead, so he could live a life of peace and respect in accord to his believes and his ancestors.
  • Because of the invasion, Jax and Sonya, create the Outer World Investigation Agency. An underground group, that traveled around realms; scouting and locating portals that could connect to the Earth. They destroyed those portals, to avoid possible invasions.
  • Mileena discovers she was returned to life by Shinnok, not Shao Kahn. And she proceeds to serve him and use her connection to Kitana's mind to help Shinnok; out of fear more than anything.

  • Quan Chi, convinces Scorpion that the younger brother of the original Sub-Zero was the one that destroyed his clan and killed his family; years ago while the older brother killed him during the mission to retrieve the map.
  • Cyrax is found by disbanded members of the Lin Kuei and set free. He's reprogrammed to continue on his mission to kill Sub-Zero. But while his damage was easy to repair, the Lin Kuei knew something was different. They sent Sektor, who also survived; to follow and report on him.
  • Tanya, the daughter of the ambassador of Edenia invites a group of refugees, who were looking to make Edenia their new home. The refugees were Quan Chi and Shinnok along with members of the Brotherhood of Shadows in disguise.
  • Edenia is attacked by Quan Chi and Shinnok and they capture Kitana and Sindel. They wanted to use Edenia as their next step; before attacking the Earth.
  • Reptile escapes and joins Shinnok's army as a commander, in the hopes of Shinnok returning his Saurian race and Zaterra to life.

  • Liu Kang learns of Kitana's capture and travels to Edenia on his own to rescue her, but can't. He travels back to Earthrealm and asks for the guidance of Raiden.
  • Raiden was forming a group to attack Shinnok, composed of Liu Kang's friends: Jax, Sonya, Sub-Zero and Kai and the god of wind Fujin.
  • Johnny Cage's soul sees the events unfold and asks Raiden to join and help his friends. Raiden returns Johnny Cage to his body.
  • Kung Lao learns of the events caused by Shinnok. He also learns that Goro, who killed his ancestor, is alive. He travels to Edenia to help his friends and avenge his ancestor’s death.
  • Tanya lures Liu Kang into a trap and reveals that she knew about the identity of the refugees, admitting she's a traitor to Edenia, but Liu Kang escapes.

  • Kitana manages to escape from her prison, only to find Mileena. Mileena thinking she could finally assume her role as princess engages Kitana. Kitana defeats Mileena and locks her into one of the prisons, in the hopes that she may eventually change her ways.
  • Scorpion confronts Sub-Zero and defeats him. When he's about to get killed, Quan Chi thinking that Sub-Zero was about to die; appears and reveals to Scorpion that he was the one that killed his clan, wife and son. Full of rage, as Quan Chi tries to send Scorpion to the Netherrealm, Scorpion grabs Quan Chi and they both are sent to the Netherrealm, were Scorpion tortures Quan Chi.
  • Liu Kang defeats Shinnok and is sent to the Netherrealm. Without someone to obey, Tanya escapes to the Outworld, knowing that she would be judged for treason by the courts of Edenia. Reptile also escapes into Outworld looking for someone to serve.
  • Cyrax failed his mission but was left to live. Sektor decides to continue his mission to kill Sub-Zero, but is defeated by him. A defeated Sektor returns to the Lin Kuei to report. A confused Cyrax meets with Jax and Sonya, which use their technology to restore Cyrax's humanity and soul back. Eternally grateful, a more human Cyrax joins the Outer World Investigation Agency.
  • While Kitana negotiates a truce between the Shokans and Centaurians, Kung Lao interrupts the ceremony to kill Goro, but decides not to. He decides to end his feud with Goro.

  • Kitana proposes to Liu Kang and offers him a place as King of Edenia. Liu Kang declines the offer, saying that his place is in the Earthrealm. They stay as friends. Kitana continues ruling Edenia with her mother Sindel and her friend Jade. Liu Kang continues training in China.
  • Because of his actions, Raiden is turned into an Elder God. He gives his position to protector of the Earthrealm to the god of wind Fujin.

Mortal Kombat has always been, and always will be...
For millennia, the forces of good and evil have been locked in eternal battle over the control of Earthrealm. Some seek to use the tournament to destroy all that is good.
Others seek vengeance, power, or eternal life.
Time after time each individual threat has been vanquished, and Earthrealm has enjoyed relative peace for many years. But there is concern that Earth is once again in peril.
And this time, the threat of evil has two faces...
It is now known that the sorcerer Quan Chi has escaped from the Netherealm.
Since his escape, Quan Chi has unlocked the secret of the ancient Rune Stone, discovered the ancient undefeatable army of the long forgotten Dragon King, ... and most disturbing of all, formed an alliance with one of our deadliest enemies...Shang Tsung.
With their combined strength, they plotted to overpower the only two beings who could prevent their total domination of our two realms.

The first was the Emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn. In a false show of allegiance to Shao Kahn, they sprung their attack...

They then traveled to Earthrealm by way of a mystical portal known only to sorcerers and deities. There they confronted Earth's mightiest warrior and Champion of Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang.It has been Shang Tsung's greatest desire to consume the soul of Earthrealm's greatest warrior. With Quan Chi's assistance, he achieved this goal...
Liu Kang is dead.

They have since returned to Outworld and are using the souls of conquered warriors to resurrect the Dragon King's undefeatable army. Should they succeed, they will have the means to conquer Outworld...and eventually Earthrealm. They will be unstoppable.

I can no longer stand idly by and watch this evil consume the world.
I have relinquished my status of Elder God to return to Earth and lead you all to battle against our old adversaries. We must act now. We must stop this Deadly Alliance.

Key Points:
  • On the Netherrealm, while being tortured by Scorpion and fleeing from him, Quan Chi discovers an ancient tomb that contained the mummified army of the Dragon King; the original ruler of Outworld. Scorpion follows the same portal, but ends in another place.
  • Quan Chi learns that the army would be invisible if resurrected, but needed the souls of powerful warriors to do so. So he makes an alliance with Shang Tsung and his ability to control and absorb the souls of other warriors. In exchange of his help, Shang Tsung will be granted immortality.
  • They knew that there were two warriors that could stop their goals from happening: Shao Kahn and Liu Kang.
  • Reptile, who has been de-evolving after prolonged period s without his matriarch, starting to go insane. he overhears Quan Chi and Shant Tsung's plans and proceed to inform his master, Shao Kahn.
  • After learning Shao Kahn's alive and that he retreated to Outworld, Kitana uses her newly formed alliance with the Shokan and Goro, to travel around Outworld rescuing people and bring balance and also face Shao Kahn and dethrone him. But at one point Goro is attacked and mortally wounded by Noob Saibot, causing them to put their plans on hold.
  • On the Lin Kuei Headquarters, Sektor kills the grandmaster and challenges Sub-Zero to a fight; as he was the only one standing in his way to become grandmaster.

  • Sub-Zero defeats Sektor. He becomes grandmaster, and came into possession of a dragon medallion; which augmented his ice-powers. Sub-Zero decides to move the clan to the Artic, were he starts recruiting new members and teaching them the importance of life and good.
  • While recruiting members, he creates a tournament were he notices a new warrior ,with similar ice-power to him; a female called Frost. Because of their similar abilities, he decides to take Frost as his assistant.
  • Shang Tsung and Quan Chi go to Outworld and offer an alliance to Shao Kahn, only to kill him between the two.
  • Reptile, who was slowed down by the vampire Nitara, after she showed him visions of Zaterra and gave him a weapon from the planet, arrives to the castle, to find Shao Kahn's body lying.
  • Then go to China and Shang Tsung (at first posing as Kung Lao) challenges Liu Kang to Mortal Kombat. Liu Kang easily wins over Shang Tsung, but Quan Chi attacks Liu Kang from behind. While recovering from the attack, Shang Tsung grabs him and snapped Liu Kang's neck, then absorbs his soul.
  • As Raiden watches the events unfold, he's shocked by the attitude of the Elder Gods of not interfering. Disgusted by this, Raiden abandons his status of Elder God and travels to Earthrealm to start gathering warrior and initiate a counter-attack.

  • Shang Tsung and Quan Chi go back to Shang Tsung's palace in Outworld were they start the process of resurrecting the army, but realize they need more souls and more powerful ones. They decide to create a fake tournament in Outworld to look for newer souls of younger powerful warriors.
  • Shang Tsung and Quan Chi seize a village from Outworld and force them to work in the palace. One of the villagers, called Li Mei is offered freedom and the freedom of her people if she wins their (fake) tournament.
  • Kung Lao finds Liu Kang's body at the Wu Shi Academy. Raiden appears and explains what happened, which enraged Kung Lao forcing him to abandon his peaceful ways in order to get revenge; once more.
  • While Goro heals, Kitana learns about the apparent death of Shao Kahn. Assuming things were going to be alright, she starts traveling back to Edenia.
  • Raiden advises that Kung Lao's not ready to defeat Shang Tsung, much less Quan Chi at least not by himself. So they ask for the help oh his friends from the Earthrealm Johnny Cage, Sonya and Jax.

  • Raiden informs Sub-Zero about Liu Kang's death and the Deadly Alliance. Surprised by Liu Kang's death, Sub-Zero joins Raiden ; but also because the experience and situation will make his new clan members respect him as a leader.
  • Sonya and Jax use this opportunity to learn more about the disappearance of two of their Outerworld Investigation Agency-agents: ex-Lin Kuei and half-cyborg Cyrax and Kenshi; a swordsman that fell under a trap from Shang Tsung sometime ago by opening a well that was supposed to (only) have a powerful sword, but had souls that left him blind. Shang Tsung absorbed this souls and left Kenshi to die.
  • Sub-Zero takes Frost with him. While she accepted; she's quite arrogant and she didn't agreed with his ideals of good and life; she also didn't get along with Sonya and the rest of the fighters.
  • While on their way to learn more about the Deadly Alliance and who to defeat it, the warriors find Princess Kitana and inform them about Liu Kang's death. Surprised, but with no time to grief Kitana joins her friends once more.
  • Raiden takes the warrior with Master Bo-Rai-Cho, so they can train and learn some new tactics that could help them defeat the Deadly Alliance.

  • Li Mei wins the tournament in her village, just to realize that it was all a trap. They had no intention of freeing her or her village. Li Mei's soul is taken and put into one of the mummified warriors.
  • As Raiden's warriors launch a counter-attack in Shang Tsung's Palace, they are overwhelmed by what seemed to be a never ending tarkatan horde. Scorpion arrives at the palace, were he is attacked by Moloch and Drahmin; two creatures from the NetherRealm. They threw Scorpion into the 'soulnado' (a tornado of souls Shang Tsung created) were he disappears.
  • Sub-Zero and Frost agree with Raiden to go through another route for the attack. Frost uses this opportunity to steal Sub-Zero's dragon medallion. Inexperienced and naive, she couldn't control its powers and was frozen by it.
  • Sub-Zero puts the blame on his shoulders as he as a teacher, failed to teach her his philosophies. He decides to look for a good place to bury her body.
  • Johnny Cage, Sonya, Jax, Kitana and Kung Lao are all killed during the attack. Raiden manages to barely survive and arrives to challenge Quan Chi and Shang Tsung to Mortal Kombat.

It was not by chance that this struggle came to be.
The blame falls squarely upon my shoulders for giving evil the chance it needed and therefore fulfilling an ancient prophecy. Raiden's Earthrealm champions had failed to stop the Deadly Alliance from fully resurrecting the mummified army of the Dragon King. In the end, only Raiden himself stood between Earthrealm and total destruction. Defying the Elder Gods' wishes, he alone challenged Quan Chi and Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat, Earthrealm's last hope for freedom.

Raiden fought well against the two sorcerers, and it seemed as though victory was at hand. But the combined might of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung proved to be overwhelming even for a thunder god. Raiden was defeated. The Deadly Alliance had won.

Their victory was short-lived. As suspicion and lust for power overcame both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung, the former allies turned on each other. The Deadly Alliance was no more. Quan Chi defeated Shang Tsung and reveled in his conquest. But it is said that there is only one true ruler of Outworld.

And that ruler had returned: Onaga, former emperor of Outworld, the Dragon King.
The prophecy had been fulfilled. The Dragon King had indeed returned to Outworld to reclaim his army and impose his dominance. Death awaited all who stood in his way. And so it was that a new alliance formed out of desperation. Sworn enemies joined forces to kombat a greater threat. Raiden began to realize that even their combined might was not enough to defeat the Dragon King. There was only one chance left.

Raiden’s sacrifice was in vain, for the blast had little effect on the Dragon King. Now Onaga has what he needs to shape the Realms as he sees fit. I was the fool who brought him this power. Only I can destroy this threat, born of deception.
-Shujinko

Key Points:
  • Decades earlier, a young man named Shujinko is sent on a mission by an emmisary of the Elder Gods called 'Damashi', to retrive the pieces of the kamidogu, a powerful artifact that granted the user power to control each realm.
  • As time goes by, Shujinko grew older and more powerful. He acquired all the pieces and as he was to give them to Damashi, Damashi reveals that he's actually Onaga, the original ruler of Outworld; also known as The Dragon King. The Kamidogu would allow him to merge all realms and awake 'the one being'. But Onaga was not alive, and he needed a new body to return.
  • A desperate Reptile wanders aimlessly through Outworld, looking for a new master and agrees to serve the vampire Nitara.
  • But Reptile was just a pawn in Nitara's plan and enraged that because of that he arrived too late to help his master, he decides to look for Nitara and ends in the Lava Chamber; with no traces of her. Only the egg of a dragon lied in front of him.
  • The egg hatches and light starts emanating from it. This light struck reptile as he became the vessel of it, causing him to be turned into Onaga, the Dragon King.

  • Looking for a place to bury Frost, Sub-Zero finds the ruins of an ancient civilization from Outworld called the Cryomancers; who could manipulate cold. Sub-Zero realizes that he and Frost were descendants from that race, so he proceeds to bury her there and finds an armor from that civilization which he decides to wear.
  • As he finds his way to the point he agreed with Raiden to meet, he's attacked by a few tarkatan. While fighting he finds a wounder warrior, called Kenshi and they both escape the horde.
  • In Shang Tsung's palace, Raiden easily wins over Quan Chi and Shang Tsung, but by absorbing souls from the 'soulnado' Shang Tsung regains strength and uses said souls to attack Raiden and weakens him.
  • As Raiden is on the ground, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung combine their powers and launch one powerful attack towards Raiden, which defeats him.
  • But their victory is short-lived, as they start to get suspicious of each other and want more power, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi engage into a fight; on which Quan Chi results victorious.

  • As Quan Chi emerged victorious, the resurrected armies of the dragon king start kneeling, a suspicious Quan Chi notices a figure emerging from the shadows; who was Onaga.
  • Quan Chi knew Onaga wanted his amulet; so he started attacking him, but his attacks barely did anything. A weakened Shang Tsung awakens to find the new threat and joins Quan Chi in his attack against Onaga.
  • But Onaga is unstoppable. Raiden stand on his feet as he watches Onaga, and he also decides to attack him. But none of their attacks seem to do anything, Onaga wants Quan Chi's amulet as is the key to unlock the power of the kamidogu.
  • Noticing this, Raiden concentrates all his essence into one single attack and blasts Onaga and destroys the palace. But the attack just made Onaga get closer to the amulet, as the attack destroyed everything; but him.
  • After learning about the Deadly Alliance, Jade arrives to Shang Tsung's palace to help Raiden's warriors, but not only she finds the ruins of it, she also finds the dead body of her friend Kitana and the other warriors. With no time to mourn or even take the bodies; she proceeds to hide after noticing a figure approaching.

  • The figure was none other than Onaga and he started resurrecting the bodies of the fallen warriors (Kitana, Cage, Kung Lao, Sonya and Jax); to do his bidding. The resurrected bodies were told to gather in the living Forest for an upcoming attack, Jade decides to follow to learn more about it.
  • There, she learns the next attack is planned for Edenia. Jade escapes to Edenia to inform Sindel about the new threat. Just to find Edenia under control of Onaga, Sindel captured by her daughter Kitana. Turned out that Onaga allied with Tanya, which knew many secrets of Edenia as he was looking for other artifacts to unlock the power of the kamidogu.
  • Raiden's essence learns about Shujinko and how he was the reason Onaga is walking around; as he materializes once more and he returns to the world of living. He's enraged by this, and decides to kill anyone and everyone that stands between the safety of the Earthrealm.
  • Raiden finds Liu Kang's body and separates his soul from it through an enchantment. Using the body as a weapon, he uses Liu Kang to kill anyone he thinks opposes him.
  • Liu Kang's soul watches all this events unfold and he decides to ally with Ermac to try to stop Onaga's control over his friend's bodies and to stop his body from doing Raiden's bidding of killing everyone.

  • Shujinko disappointed at how things turned out has been gathering warriors from across the realms to stop Onaga.
  • Scorpion, awakens into the Void after surviving the 'soulnado' There he meets the Elder Gods who in need of a warrior to stop Onaga's threat, turn Scorpion into their champion granting him more powerful and any wish. He wishes for the return of his clan the Shirai Ryu to life, and the resurrection of his wife and son.
  • Sub-Zero returns to Outworld, after learning that Shujinko is recruiting warriors to stop Onaga. In Outworld he meets with Sareena; an ally from his late brother during earlier years.
  • Sub-Zero offers asylum to Sareena in the Lin Kuei, as the two travel they spot Noob-Saibot reprogramming Smoke to serve him and takes him to a portal. They proceed to save his friend and end in the Netherrealm. As they arrive, Noob-Saibot reveals he is Sub-Zero's older brother, who after dying by Scorpion in the earlier tournament he return to life in the Netherrealm for the crimes he committed. The two attack Sub-Zero and left him unconscious.
  • Sareena appears as Sub-Zero awakens, but she's reverted to her original (demonic) form. A confused Sub-Zero attacks Sareena, but she feels and disappears in the Netherrealm. He returns to meet with Shujinko.

  • Jade manages to rescue Sindel from Kitana and imprisons her, causing Kitana to shout for guards. As Jade and Sindel escaped, to gather with Shujinko; in the hopes that by defeating Onaga; her friend and daughter would be freed from Onaga's spell.
  • Shujinko gathered all the warriors he met through his journey together and using a power that the same Onaga bestowed upon him years earlier; he acquired the essence of all those warrior. Granting him god-like status to defeat Onaga.
  • Shujinko destroys the pieces of the kamidogu and defeats Onaga. Onaga's soul is separated from his body and sent to the Netherrealm. The body he used as a vessel, reverts to its original self; Reptile's body. The spell upon Johnny Gage, Kung Lao, Jax, Sonya and Kitana is broken, and they're left alive. They part ways to try to establish some order into their lives and the realms; after everything that happened.
  • While known as a hero in Outworld, Shujinko still felt some guilt by what happened so he decides to join Kitana and help her in Edenia.

There have been many powerful warriors throughout the millenia.
But ages of Mortal Kombat have begun to tear at the fabric of the realms. The critical point has finally been reached.

It was forseen that kombatants would one day grow too powerful and too numerous. If left unchecked, their intensifying kombat would weaken and shatter the realms, and bring about the apocalypse. The Elder Gods demanded a safeguard put in place, to avoid total destruction. One that would make use of the kombatants insatiable bloodlust. Like moths to flame, they would be drawn to battle.

At the apex of destruction, alliances will be broken and old hatreds will be revived.

At last, it is come to this final battle. Armageddon has begun.

Key Points:
  • Scorpion arrives in front of the Elder Gods and informs that Shujinko defeated Onaga. He asks for his part of the bargain, of which the Gods were reluctant at first but decide to grant him his wish.
  • They return the Shirai Ryu to life, but not his family. Since Scorpion didn't fulfilled his end of the deal fully and he didn't defeated Onaga. Turned out that his clan was returned to life, but as specters. An enraged Scorpion abandons his status as champion of the Elder Gods and leaves along with his clan; looking for vengeance.
  • Shujinko grew suspicious of Kitana, as she seemed to be building an army of warriors to launch an attack. Shujinko realized that it wasn't Kitana the one in Edenia, but Mileena; her clone. As the original Kitana wasn't in Edenia and left with her friends and mother to give guidance to Liu Kang's soul and possibly restores him to his body.
  • Shujinko exposes Mileena, and fighters her. But he decides to let her defeat and imprison him; so he could learn more about what was going on.
  • On the Lava Chamber were Onaga returned to life, a being known as Blaze is set free. Blaze was created with the purpose to awaken two powerful warriors, in case there was no balance across the realms.

  • Blaze discovers that while in his absence, a number of warriors across realms grew to powerful and this affected the fate of everyone. Blaze proceeds to call and awaken the two warriors: Taven ad Daegon. But he learns that Daegon was awaken centuries earlier when his protector lost communications with Blaze and thought it was time to make the call.
  • This caused Daegon to be unbalanced and a thirst for power and revenge; since he ignored his parents put him to sleep in the first place. Daegon killed his parents and continued his journey in search for power.
  • Taven awakens after Blaze's call and he takes a journey across the realms not knowing the reasons, what happened to his parents or about his brother Daegon.
  • Scorpion learns about the brothers and they being a "safeguard" for the Elder Gods and he decides to hunt them and kill them to get his revenge against the gods.
  • Blaze raises the Pyramid of Argus is order to get the attention of all kombatants, to meet there and let the brother that emerged victorious decide their fate. He decides to travel to the Netherrealm, after sensing that something from there was deceiving Daegon.

  • There he learns that Shinnok not only has been manipulating Daegon and turning him against his brother. But he also spread around the false idea that the warrior that arrived at the top of the Pyramid of Argus would be granted god-like powers.
  • Scorpion attacks Taven, but it's defeated. Raiden after learning about the brothers through Shinnok and the god-like power, confronts Taven as he wants the power to undo what everyone has done across realms. Taven defeats Raiden,as he leaves questioning why would a "god" be seduced for power and obsessed in killing in order to bring life.
  • Blaze decides to return to the pyramid to await the arrival of the brothers Taven and Daegon; only to find a warzone between all the fighters of the realms that wanted the power at the pyramid.
  • Taven confronts his brother Daegon and Daegon reveals he was the one that killed their parents. The fight ensues, and Taven defeats him, but doesn't kill him. Blazes watches as Taven emerges victorious, but the fate of all the warriors fighting and looking for power is still uncertain, as they start arriving one by one to the top of the pyramid to claim the prize and their fate.

This is not meant as an accurate summary as many events and characters were omitted. It's a just a bit of an even bigger and deeper story.

At the moment, is is not known the individual fates of each warrior, after the armageddon. The only thing that is known is that Raiden and Shao Kahn seem to be the only ones fighting at the end and Shao Kahn kills Raiden, which causes Raiden to send a message to the past and warn himself about the impending armageddon.

But the entire cannon is re-written by this new game, so use this as quick/short guide of the original story, and to understand some of the reasoning and motives behind some characters.

A few-random avatars to start.
Regarding avatars, please read:
Avatars are now hosted by NeoGAF instead of going through an external url. The new avatar size limits are 100x120 pixels and 50KB. Animated avatars are no longer permitted.

As before, avatars should be G-rated, and not explicit, suggestive, or disgusting. NeoGAF readers can use their discretion for what threads to click on, but cannot use their discretion for which avatars they end up seeing, so ensure your avatars are very work-safe.

To set up your avatar, click on the User CP at the top navigation bar, then Edit Avatar, then either provide the system with a link for the image you'd like to use or choose a file from your computer. Either way, the image will be hosted on the NeoGAF servers, so there are no worries about finding a webhost for your image.

If you would like to continue using your previous avatar with the new system, the old url can be found in your user profile.

Avatar functionality site-wide can now be disabled, for example if you're browsing with limited bandwidth or at work. To enable or disable avatars being displayed, click on User CP, then Edit Options, scroll to Thread Display Options, then in the Visible Post Elements section select or deselect "Show Avatars."

If you need assistance creating an avatar, head on over to the Forum Avatar Request Thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390648

Awesome OP!

I must say I haven't been this excited for a Mortal Kombat game in a LONG time. I really enjoyed the demo.

This question has probably been asked a million times, but has it been confirmed if the classic ninja outfits will be unlocked through the Krypt or are they exclusive only through pre-orders?

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
This OT makes me wish the game wasn't banned.

I'll try my luck at importing it at some point.

This thread is intense!

Also, wow, I thought they simply banned its sale in AUS, but it's outright illegal to just bring it into the country? Truly, the southern hemisphere is a paradise.

ConradCervantes said:
Is that stuff about Australians not even being able to import it under penalty of law true? If so, wow, that's bullshit.

It's true but people have imported games that were banned there before.
