Like many others, I saw the title and instantly thought of Assassin's Creed. I have a love-hate relationship with that series. I love the idea, but I hate how Ubi fail to capitalize on it. Played AC1 and was mildly disappointed. Still, for a first attempt, it was pretty good and it provided a solid foundation to build upon. Which Ubi did in spectacular fashion.
AC2 released and I bought it at launch. I was blown away at how much of an improvement it was. It's easily in my top ten of last gen. The Carnevale set piece was incredible, the characters and setting were interesting and the tombs were extremely memorable. Sure, the feathers were ridiculous, the present-day elements were unnecessary and boring, the tailing missions were tiresome, the combat was wank and the game was fairly janky, but it was so rare to see a sequel improve on so many things. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I actually cancelled a date at the last minute because I couldn't tear myself away from it. I immediately started dreaming about the next AC and wondering how they could possibly top it.
And then came Brotherhood, which IMO had a nice story, but wasn't a patch on AC2. I couldn't help but notice that the amount of padding was creeping up and none of the problems AC2 had had been addressed in any way... But the next numbered title has to be great, right?
I originally skipped Revelations with the intention of picking it up later, but in the end, I never got around to it.
So... That brings us to AC3... When the first trailers for AC3 surfaced, I was ridiculously excited. This was going to be a full blown sequel, and Ubi were surely going to bring their A-game. Right? Wrong. Assassin's Creed 3 was about as good as a kick in the balls. While ambitious, Assassin's Creed 3 failed to get anywhere near the lofty standards set by the excellent AC2. In fact, it failed to get close to brotherhood. By the time AC3 rolled along, the engine was really beginning to show its age and the awkwardness of the free roaming was becoming ever more apparent. And the controls... I'm an Assassin. Why the hell can't I crouch? Why can't I jump unless I'm running? I can climb that building, but I get stuck on that tiny fence? Sure, these were also problems in previous games, but the complete lack of improvement after so long was offensive.
Then there's the dumb as a plank AI. You can pretty much dance in front of enemy guards in restricted areas. And they'll see you, realize you shouldn't be there and get suspicious. But don't worry, because he didn't see you for 10 seconds, so he'll just lazily stick a sword in a bush and forget about you. WTF? This game was made in 2012 on a huge budget by a team of well over 500 people. I know that A.I. has long been a problem with the AC series, but did it ever occur to someone to, y'know, fix it? Hell, I'd take minor improvements with each installment.
And then there's the assassinations. Where AC2 (and brotherhood) gave you a despicable cast of villains to assassinate in interesting ways, I can't really remember assassinating anyone in AC3. With the exception of two characters, both of whom you could only kill at the end of a scripted fucking chase. In a game about Assassinations, that right there is a failure. Yeah, I probably killed others, but they certainly weren't memorable. In contrast, I can remember each and every target in every Hitman game... Yes, even Absolution. See the difference, UBI? Oh, and the characters themselves were all criminally boring, with the exception of
, who was about the only character they got right. And then there's all the filler, which by now had ballooned to ridiculous proportions.
All of this is symptomatic of Ubisoft's recent AAA development. They recycle the same garbage filler game after game and even across different franchises. Just look at those recent documents that surfaced, where none other than Yves Guillemot
stated that sharing assets between franchises and outsourcing projects across multiple teams would enable Ubi to constantly deliver AAA titles. And he's right. But at what cost? I've felt that all of UBI's recent AAA output has been rather soulless. In AC, you climb buildings/trees etc to unlock portions of the map. In Far Cry, you climb towers etc to unlock portions of the map. In Watch Dogs, you climb buildings to unlock portions of the map. And I'm fucking sick of it. How long before others become fatigued with not only single franchises, but all UBI's output? I know I am. I hope Yves realizes how potentially disastrous this could be for Ubisoft's future. Another Unity or two, and they may just turn off a significant portion of the market for good.
You see, the thing is, I just want to go to interesting periods in history and kill interesting antagonists in a game with an interesting sandbox approach. Can you imagine if AC was as open ended as the Hitman series? Imagine if you could assassinate a target by pushing him off the side of a building or dropping something heavy on him from above? Imagine if you could stealthily infiltrate an area and take him out in any number of ways, or just run in swinging swords at everyone. Imagine if you could, say, plant ladies underwear in his bedroom, causing his jealous lover to kill him. Ubisoft have the manpower and budget to do this. But they just slap out the same thing with minor differences every year. I feel bad for the artists, composers and writers working on this potentially interesting series.
Oh, and the modern day crap? Puuhhhleease drop it already. I know that they said it was required in order to explain why we're going to these different periods of history, but really, it isn't. In the AC universe, the templars and the assassin's existed for thousands of years, constantly at war with each other to shape what is now history. I don't see why we need some half arsed ancestral ties BS to explain it. It's been unpopular since the very first game. After (major AC3 spoiler)
, they finally had the chance to drop it. But no, they just keep beating the dead horse.
As for AC4... Meh... Quite possibly the most filler crap that's ever been in an Ubi game. I mean seriously, just open that fucking map... Hell, just arrive in a new location and a menu pops up on screen informing you of how many collectibles there are at that location. Soulless, bland shite. Collectibles should be hidden and/or represent some sort of a challenge. The fact that there are icons everywhere is just depressing and is a blatant, lazy excuse for "gameplay". More boring sailing (although I will admit that I am clearly in the minority here), fucking tailing missions, more fucking towers to climb, a decent main character and a colourful world... That's about it. Oh, and storm the fort... That was fun... Oh shit, there's a fucking tonne of them and they're all the fucking same. "Gameplay".
I borrowed AC4 from a friend. After AC3, I was extremely disappointed with Ubi, but I still foolishly bought into the hype and bought Watch Dogs. And I'm done... No more AAA Ubi games for me. I may play them if I'm given the chance (borrowed AC4 and got FC3 for free with PS plus), but I won't spend another penny for another Ubisoft: The game. C'mon Ubisoft. Get your finger out and make a game a great idea like AC deserves...
*Looks at Unity*
