Most dissapointing series of all time

Assassin's Creed in recent memory. I would have honestly preferred the medieval setting of ACII without the convoluted sci-fi storyline. Maybe then they could have focused on developing a more polished series, emphasizing gameplay rather than cinematic presentation.

Spore. Feels like they made the creature creator and then just stopped there. Reading the dev interviews shows a lot of ambition not present in the final game or its laughable spinoffs.
Metroid. What a waste if a series.

Killzone, Sonys answer to Halo and it is just so meh..

Call me crazy, but I actually loved Killzone Shadowfall and its story. A bit more subtle and even captures today's political climate very well compared to other shooters. It's not a great story, but it surprised me.

The other games in the series fit your description though.

For me personally, it's Destiny.

Here we are after years of hype and build up only for me to learn that my favorite developer has been misdirecting themselves into creating something I don't want for the next decade. Lovely. It's not just that the game isn't good, it's that nothing else will be made by that studio because of it.

Mario Party... i love playing these with family but hate the disappointment that the series increments with each sequel into obscurity.

Just crib from Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Arkham Horror for your boards and give the option to take off random winner for competitive play.

Sonic, Wild ARMS, Suikoden...

All good games which had some terrible entries before dying out.

At least Suikoden got to go out on a high note, and Wild ARMS had some good stuff before it went away.

Sonic, however, is a zombie that refuses to freaking die.

You cannot disappoint without having some expectation of greatness. That being said, I usually don't have expectations unless the first game is good.

Soooooo Perfect Dark Zero was so bad that it pulled Perfect Dark original down. :(

I wouldn't say it's the most disappointing series of all time, but I'll give a shout out to Blue Dragon. A traditional JRPG directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, with art by Akira Toriyama, and music by Nobuo Uematsu sounds like a recipe for awesome. Ended up being a pretty middling series.

Sonic has a handful of games I love a lot, and some of them are newer too like Sonic Generations. As a series I don't find it disappointing.

Almost every game I've played of Fable never met the hype videos that Molyneux put out. All had potential but just never really hit any of the marks it was aiming for.

Blue Dragon was a pretty good RPG for the 360. Could have really turned into something great with some sequels that tightened things up. Unfortunately, the sequels were for handhelds AND changed the genre with each new installment so it never really found its groove.

A lot of attention seeking ones in here, Metroid and Zelda? Seriously? Maybe they aren't to your tastes which is fine but you can't say that as a series they've been disappointing. One stinker for Metroid
which I actually enjoyed
and a few controversial Zeldas
which I also enjoyed
does not make for a disappointing series as a whole.

But yeah, gonna agree with the majority here and say Sonic. Only Sonic that I truly enjoyed and thought was an excellent game was Sonic Rush. It was fun, had rewarding gameplay and wasn't over the top with it's narrative. Sonic Rush Adventure wasn't quite as good but I still had fun with it.

Sonic Heroes was my first and as a kid it as ok but meh. Especially going back to it. Bought Sonic 3 on the Wii VC and got all the way up to the final boss and never beat it. Enjoyed it for the most part though. Bought Sonic and the Secret Rings and regretted it, shorty traded in after. Got fooled again with Sonic Unleashed (I was aware of the crap night time sections) and despite enjoying the day time sections it wasn't enough to make me beat it, so again, traded it in. Played the demos of Sonic 4 and Generations and both were lacking that same spark. Recently got Sonic Advance and it was enjoyable enough, forced myself to beat it a little, but on the whole better than Sonic 3. Got Advance 2 and 3 along with it but have yet to play them.

So yeah, for a series that is so popular
(or people blinded by nostalgia)
I'm really not seeing why Sonic is the icon he is (or was).

Sonic is #1.
AssCreed might be #2.
Fable is #3

I actually liked Killzone 3 and Shadow Fall. Resistance 1 and 3 are great. So both of those series are off my list.

Killzone for me as well. It just felt soulless and empty to me. I always thought Resistance was everything I wanted Killzone to be.

AC is a close second though.

It was never billed as a Halo killer by Sony and Killzone 2 received more critical acclaim than a couple of Halo titles and had a loyal MP following, so that game at least delivered.

I do agree as a series it was disappointing.
This. Killzone 2 is an amazing FPS.

My answer is probably Fable.

Mass Effect

The high point of the series is the citadel at the beginning of 1 and the low point is the end of 3. If you plotted my enjoyment of the series on a graph it would be a door stop.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow

Amazing art, amazing music, amazing cast, amazing tech, but....but...

Mediocre in basically every other way in the first game, and the second game was flat out bad in every other way. Worst part of it all was the first game showed a lot of potential, needing only a few tweaks here or there and you'd have a really good, if not great, game. And then the second one fell flat on its face. Such a waste.

Agreed. I still enjoyed the Lords of Shadow and I think they weren't that bad games (just okay) but I would lie when I said they didn't waste a lot of potential. You can see how talented the team behind these games is and how much love they poured into art and presentation. If only the gameplay progression and world design had more consistency.

GTA. I haven't been able to finish any of them since the move to 3D.

This. I don't know what it is but I just can't get stick with them. As a kid I had a blast dicking around in GTA III and Vice City, but after San Andreas I just haven't been bothered with it. Furthest I've got is in Vice City and IV but have always given up. I guess I just liked it for the random killing sprees and messing with the cops. Gave V a go last year as well and gave up after the first mission.

Only one I ever completed was Chinatown Wars but that may have been because it was the only one I actually paid for.

I don't get all the "Sonic" answers. It's had too many good games to be the most disappointing series of all time. And Sonic Generations wasn't too long ago -- that was good.

Probably not the most disappointing of all time, but the first that comes to mind for me is Dead Space. The first game was quite good, and when they announced there were going to be sequels, we all predicted exactly what would happen - the action would be ramped up, and the horror would be toned down. As a single game, it was very good, but as a series, quite poor.

I have to say Assassins Creed.

The first AC looked like something great until it was released and it turned out to be a turd. This was announced at a time when Ubi still released quality games such as Chaos Theory, Beyond good and evil and PoP. I expected AC to be a defining next-gen game, such as was promised.

Creed 2 was a good game, but another one I couldn't sit through for its entirety. The rest I tried for a bit but nah, its not my franchise. Its so dull in my eyes.

Lost Planet.

I think Lost Planet was such an amazing game. I just loved the fights, the scenarios and the feel of it... then along came Lost Planet 2 (such a mess) and 3 (dead space rip-off that I didnt even bother) that made this amazing game become nothing but a fond memory.

Definitely Assassins's Creed. I'm still waiting for the game to finally release an installment which will grab me by the balls and show me the time of my life.

But I'm sure an annual weak duplicated experience is good enough huh

Mass Effect. Ironic since it's still one of the best series ever IMO, but the third game, to me, made the trilogy disappointing as a whole for several reasons other than "The ending sucked".

A lot argue ME2 was where the overall plot of the trilogy was doomed to fail... sure, maybe that's true to some extent since 2 introduced a lot of stuff that went nowhere and didn't move the main plot of the Reaper threat forward a lot but to me Mass Effect was mostly great because of the subplots and the Reaper threat/Main plot was just 50% of the greatness. To me ME2 is the best part of the trilogy even if ME1 ultimately had the best plot.

Then ME3 came out and completely shattered my admittedly very high expectations. I was hoping ME3 to be everything 2 was but better. Instead I got an inferior game to both of the other two. Tuchanka was awesome but the rest was eh.

Well, at least it has that boss music

1. Mass Effect

I was crazy hyped for Mass Effect 1 and it turned out a turd. Part 2 was no better. I played the demo for #3 and decided to skip it. Awful series and hilariously overrated. The Witcher 1 came out the same year as ME1 and crapped on it in virtually every department. Other than setting, I found both games surprisingly similar. Modern Bioware absolutely fucking sucks and hasn't released a worthwhile game in 10 years. C-tier dev If I've ever seen one.

2. Elder Scrolls

This series has spawned basically one good game and that's Morrowind. Morrowind is fucking fantastic and easily one of the best RPGs and best videogames in history. Oblivion and Skyrim? Not so much. I played Daggerfall and Arena after Morrowind and didn't enjoy them but I'm not sure how I would've liked them had I played them at release. The way the series is progressing now, I have no faith in it. Hell, I wish Bethesda would just hand their two big IPs (Fallout, TES) over to to Obsidian and let them have a go at it. Their team is so much more talented, it's not funny.

Another "I hate what you like" thread, nice.

Whatever, my picks:
  • Resistance
  • Killzone
  • Fable
  • Alan Wake
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Lost Planet
  • Crysis
  • Mario Party
  • Pikmin

In terms of creating an awesome idea/location (AC1), a great game (AC2) and then continually spiraling down into a cesspool of mediocrity, then yes, AC is very disappointing.

Sonic is a worse series overall, but considering that it never actually reached greatness in any form, I'm less disappointed by it.

Mass Effect is really personally disappointing (Loving 1, liking 2, and hating 3), but that has more to do with it changing into a third person shooter more than an RPG, and it also hasn't had the chance to be run into the ground as much as the other series (yet).

For me personally, it's Destiny.

But the game is good. You just don't like it.

F1 series by Codemasters.

Considering how good they were at racing sims before this, their games have been shit.

Absolutely this. F1 2010 was amazing and I spent so many hours playing the 360 version. Everything since has just felt like a lazy rehash.

For me it might be Call of Duty. I played COD2 on 360 and it was one of the best gaming experiences I'd ever had. I absolutely loved the high frame rate, open areas and 'feel' of the guns.

When COD4 came out, that was amazing too, although mostly for story reasons. Since then I've totally become uninterested. They do nothing for me, that is, the campaigns do. I realize that they're hugely multiplayer focused, which is fine, but it's just not my thing. I've heard that Advanced Warfare is pretty decent, but haven't tried it.

Even still, compared to how much I LOVED Call of Duty 2, that would have to be the one for me.

Most of you guys and gals, have never played all the games in the series and probably some of you haven't played any of them and making claims. More than like referencing reviews and word of mouth instead of your own play time. Just my opinion.

My picks are:

-Mass Effect
-Assassin's Creed
-Killzone

As for Sonic, I have a mixed reaction about it. There are good games (Generations, Colors) but Sonic Team and Sega really don't know what to do with the franchise.

Sonic, Wild ARMS, Suikoden...

All good games which had some terrible entries before dying out.

At least Suikoden got to go out on a high note, and Wild ARMS had some good stuff before it went away.

Sonic, however, is a zombie that refuses to freaking die.

Sonic is more relevant that most of the Smash roster. The only people that say he is dead or should die are message board nerds.

For me, it's:

1) Final Fantasy

I love the series up through IX. Every successive game past IX has successfully chipped away at my "fucks to give" towards this series to where I have none left.

2) Mass Effect

Mass Effect 1 is still one of my favorite games of all time. I was heartbroken when ME2 came out and the exploration and RPG elements were all but completely removed from the game and then when ME3 came out it seemed like nothing more than a cash grab.

If you told 1994-me that I would eventually loathe Final Fantasy games, he would have said you were high. Sonic is another shocking one if you were there during the 16-bit platformer rivalry.

Most modern examples (including AssCre) are pretty mild compared to those.
