Most garish art styles in video games

awful? you have a impossible high standard or you don't know the meaning of the word "awful"

i know everyone stops at the mermaid butt and sorcerer tits and pretend there's nothing else in the game, but c'mon.

Those screenshots don't change my view. I think it's just an appealing art style to me. The colours, the shading, the character design, the actual design in general. I just look at it and it really irks me for some reason.

I've never liked the art style of Street Fighter IV.

The transition from the older games (Alpha, SFIII, SFII) just doesn't jive well with me and never has. Everyone looks way too muscular and cartoony and can barely wear the clothing they are in. I just don't like it.

But there are exceptions to that. Strangely, I think Rolento actually made the transition really well. He is the sole SF character that I feel this way about.

the other exception is that I think that the Tekken characters in SFxT are better suited to the SFIV art style than the SF cast. Maybe it's my lack of affinity for most things Tekken, but it might just be that the transition was not as harsh.

I vote that we should start referring to this kind of garbage as something to the effect of "mastur-bait". The kind of clothing design that could never fulfill any design criteria of clothing under reasonable combat or general movement conditions: it can't reasonably protect, keep warm, or even under most cases cover the wearer. They're just desparate grabs for attention by the character designers by making as much of the character's naked body visible as possible, right down to precisely showing you the shape or location of the covered areas via the way you find mines in Minesweeper.

yeah I'm using that term, bwahahaha

I don't mind most of the art in Pokemon X/Y, but the UI design is garish as fuck to my eyes.

From the ugly-ass speech bubbles...

...to the menu design that looks like a late-90s early-00s website.

And on top of that, some of the menus look like they have a bunch of JPEG compression!

Amano is so fucking bad. Thankfully, we don't need to put up with his garbage drawings in the games.

Instead, we get to put up with characters like Tidus, Nooj and the like. Thank goodness Nomura is seemingly past that type of thing. His actual character designs as of recent are pretty damn good. Let's hope he never slips back into the heavily angular "I can make characters look like living tribal tattoos" like he did in the mid 00s.

Dare I even say, I'd rather have an anime artist like Fujishima or Akira Toriyama take over the FF series than EVER see that style of Nomura art EVER again in the series. Again, it seems like Nomura's gotten past that type of crap, which is a GOOD thing.

Wasn't Suzuhito Yasuda the guy who did Desu 1& 2's character designs? He also did this for Digimon World Re:Digitize:

But as for DeSu, Amane stands out in the original as having an outfit that makes no sense:

DeSu-Amane.jpg

How is she meant to wear that without tripping everywhere? I actually really like DeSu, it's a good game. Just has one or two odd design choices.

None of these are really examples of garish artstyles, though.

I honestly, love all of his stuff. I mean, it's ok to critize designs, but seriously, give people some creative space. I understand you'd whine bout those Castlevania designs being out of place and not true to the source material; but Yasuda just straight up killed shit for Devil Survivor 2 and his Yozakura Quartet series, lovely stuff.

I vote against that. And completely disagree with all of your statements, it seems sad that someone would be so easily offended by sexuality as you are. The cloth/cloak she's wearing could easily be of magical use in loads of shapes or forms; she just happens to be in a stance where it's not rly covering her body. I also don't believe these are "desperate grabs for attention", i believe a lot of thought went into making this particular character sexualised yet not too perverted, it's edgy work, but i think you are underestimating the design choices that are behind these works.

Surprise surprise...Ive disliked Nomora's Final Fantasy's the most.

You dislike FF6, 7, 8, and 10?

Your tag fits perfectly, you're examples epitomize awesome, to be so minimal, they have more character than all the characters combined in most modern final fantasy titles.

That doesn't make any sense. You're letting your nostalgia and love for the old stories cloud what you're saying about designs, since the in-game designs barely resemble the art.

Agreed here. I think Nagako Sakaki is *AWFUL* and I don't get how they're constantly finding new employment (they're not even very good). The characters look psychotic and miserable, the women are sexualized to look like female cows with gigantic utter tits, and the sense of fashion is beyond practical. BOO.

It's an Atlas Shin Megami game, looking psychotic and miserable is normal.

And honestly, it sounds like you may have some issues with seeing breasts if you get so angry at them being "female cows with gigantic utter tits". Do you ever go out to the club / beach / warm summer night life and scream "Ugh, gross, look at these girls wearing sexy clothing, all these female cows with their big udder tits hanging out make me so mad!

They're just breasts. Nothing to meltdown over.

Chrono Cross. Just ew.

Think Zelda wins this thread though. Those pics... gahhh.

Oh well. Either way, I don't think WoW's art direction is garish and subjectively I think Dark Souls' art direction is about as bland as a game can get (even if it isn't really relevant to the thread).
Bland?
Bland?
Bland?
Bland?!

Well then.

:P

(Sorry for getting off-topic. I couldn't resist. I'll stop now.)
Credit goes to Neiteio for the shots.

Who the fuck is Nagako Sakaki. If you want to criticize an artist at least get his name right.

As much as I like Yasuda's art I also think that he leans too much towards sexualization of his characters. But this is a topic about garish art styles, not sexualization, and I think his art is fine.

Okay, good to know that I'm not the only one here thinking people are going after the wrong guy. I was always under the impression that Sakaki did the illustrations in the Devil Survivor 2 manga but had no input with the character designs for the original games.

I actually happen to really like his artwork, but dislike it when artists come up with designs that don't seem to make any practical sense. The artwork of Amane I posted is an example of that, although having it hang in front of her instead of between her legs would make more sense as someone correctly pointed out.

I have nothing against creative freedom, but it's also fine to criticize the results when they seem kind of ridiculous.

FYI, the band does hang behind her in-game and in other design artwork. The between-legs is just the most common piece posted.

Oh crap! Sorry I was naming the wrong artist. Thanks for correcting it so politely.
I guess my criticism is that I dig the work. I mean totally cool with it and would like more. You know, sincerely.

It's like jump-rope.

Point taken, i personally don't rly care all that much if design's don't make much sense :-D

god this line-art is perfect :x
I have to say the pixelated versions of the main characters in devil survivor 1 and 2 looked horrid though :x

For real! Wonderful work.

Now garish is Hotline Miami. But I also find that art wonderful as well and, man, does it create a mood.

Now then there's this game I picked up on Steam just the other day for reasons:
//N.P.P.D. RUSH//- The milk of Ultraviolet

I hated the look of every character that wasn't Dust
I'm sure this thread is full of opinions that would annoy me but I agree with this.

I noticed that few people point out the Dust creator is the artist/animator of the Jazz Jackrabbit games. Which were way, WAY more charming and cartoony instead of having this lame 'boring, charmless Deviantart-anime-furry' aesthetic.
