Most Overrated "Underrated" Developers?

Agree with OP.

Falcom has done jack shit for me, other than Trails in the Sky. Don't care for Ys personally.

Atlus has not released a console RPG since 2008. And the lack of SMT IV in Europe doesn't really help.

I would personally go with Atlus.

this Atlus ?

This is just a hate thread.

as a general rule; it's not a hate thread unless it's a final fantasy thread

ATLUS.... underrated?

The hell?

If anything, they are one of the most constantly highly regarded developers around, especially in GAF.

Just because they are not as monstrous as EA or Activision doesn't automatically make them "underrated."

Phil Fish? But that's more of a function that he created a game that couldn't live up to the expectations people had of it.

I haven't actually played any of their games yet, but I feel like From Software would probably fall under this category for me.

Also, I've heard this about Modern Day Rare (modern day as in after they were sold to Microsoft, before they were put on Kinect 24/7) and I just don't see it. I disliked Banjo N&B (not because it wasn't like the other Banjo platformers), Kameo, and the Diddy Kong Racing DS port they did.

Platinum. Great games, but praised to heavens for some reason. MGR is the only engaging game out of the bunch to my taste.

They'd be a little strapped for cash if they jumped on the PS3 bandwagon any sooner.

When people use "underrated", they mean companies that are always beloved and devoid of criticisms anyway. So Atlus does fit the bill.

Don't get me wrong, Atlus is a very competent developer by their past work. However they haven't make a single RPG in consoles for many years. And I couldn't play SMT IV due to region-lock and no EU release of the title.

Personally I also didn't like P3 and P4 as much as many here.

Grasshopper/Suda51

The end. Don't get me wrong, I dug Lollipop Chainsaw and Shadows of the Damned, but sometimes the amount of positivity attributed to some of their games is overrated, in my opinion.

I just don't get No More Heroes, for example--seriously attempted that game multiple times and came away unimpressed.

How can you think a developer is overated if you've never played a game they made? You can't judge a game like Dark Souls if you've never played it.

If anyone overrates Atlus it's their fans. They overrated consistently though, so whatever they're doing right for those fans they're doing it consistently well. That's not something even Nintendo can boast.

I'm an Atlus fan btw.

No more than the amount of love Blizzard gets though.

They get a free pass from Etrian Odyssey alone.

I feel like Anarchy Reigns would have been a glorious multiplayer game in the vein of Smash Brothers had it more market presence and, you know, better netcode. Some of the modes were an absolute riot.

Guys, there's a reason those developers are niche. It's because only a niche really like their stuff. So of course most of you wont like it. Duh.

I personally don't like Atlus nor Nippon Ichi games, but I still have great respect for them. They do what they're good at and keep their fans happy. Doesn't matter if most people aren't into their stuff, it's not for everyone and that's a good thing.

Platinium Games - they are worshipped on gaf when they do pretty average few hours long games with not enough substance to justify anything above bargain bin price.

Exactly how I feel.

I'm not sure why people like to say things are over-rated. It feels like this particular word was cherry-picked to invoke some not-so-nice reactions.

It's fine if you dislike a game, but why feel the need to throw the opinions of many other people (who happened to enjoy a game) under the bus?

This is true. The reason I think I'm going to think they're underrated though is because, from what I can gather, the Souls games are literally their only well recieved games. Everything else seems to be "archaic, but good if you can get into it," like King's Field, which I suppose is fair but I don't really think they deserve to be best dev of all time if people only really like two games from them. Though I suppose this whole thing and vote is stupid since you're right, I haven't played the Souls games yet.

So I'm going to change my vote to Nippon Ichi. Also, not sure of they count since they're fairly popular and some of their games sold really well, but Obsidian

Man, in my opinion you're totally missing the point of playing videogames.

Please continue to enjoy the genre however you want though, but I just... damn.

King's Field and Shadow Tower are niche. That doesnt mean anything about how they were recieved critically. Your logic is all sort of shaky.

Yeah. Usually pretty solid with 2D graphics work, but when it comes to gameplay... not so great.
Except for Shantae series and their other 2D work like the Switch Force series.

But I hate to admit it, even though I'm a fan of WayForward, with the exception of Boy and His Blob and those games I mentioned above, they're other games aren't very good.

Which is why I have a tough time agreeing with those who want WF to make a Metroid.

This thread is kinda dumb
. But at the very least people should explain why they don't like 'x' developer, otherwise its hard for my to tell them why they are wrong/bias and have no business discussing said 'overrated' status because context actually matters in that regard.

For example, I don't like WRPGS....if I were, hypothetically mind you, to say 'Obsidian is overrated' without proper context it means nothing, I have no knowledge of the genre, I don't know the merits that people value of said developer, Overrated is the wrong term in that regard.

This is my favorite "Why don't you think like the rest of us and stop having an opinion" post ever.

What would a thread about underrated overrated devs look like I wonder.

Also this thread's concept is really passive aggressive. If seeing praise for a game or games bothers someone, you'd think there isn't much to gain complaining about your opponents outside those discussions.

Bolded was a bit boastful/ a joke. Sorta

the key term is 'overrated' . Depending on the context I can accurately defend the merit of a developer and what they are praised for, its inaccurate to say something is 'overrated' with no context.

Basically if someone said 'I don't like "X" developer"...then whatever that's not something I concern myself with 90% of the time.

But if someone were to say 'I think 'X' developer is overrated', well there is a discussion to be had, and refutation to be analyzed on the vapid meaning of said "overratedness'

King's Field and Shadow Tower are niche. That doesnt mean anything about how they were recieved critically. Your logic is all sort of shaky.

I'm not sure what your point here is (I know they're niche, otherwise they wouldn't be underrated in the first place, but I hear people on Forums like this list From as one of the best developers of all-time when most people only really like two of their games), but I agree my logic is all kinds of shaky which is why I changed my vote.

No one ever stops to think they overrate themselves and their opinions.

The people whose only basis for idea everyone else got it wrong is that they happen to disagree should wonder if blunt arbitrary logic leads to "rating" things precisely.

I will admit, I don't fully get it either. You want us to say what are the overrated underrated developers? But then aren't they underrated as people don't like them, so then us saying they're overrated underrated means that your opinion on them is why they're underrated? Or are they overrated, but we don't think they deserve to be as such? But can they be overrated if they're niche? And they can only be underrated if they had a bad reputation, so aren't we just saying....

...Is there even such a thing as being both overrated and underrated? Essentially is this just saying niche developers who develop for niche audiences that we don't like? But isn't that why its niche, cause it develops for a niche audience? So obviously being a niche they don't have mass appeal, but maybe are loved by their audience? So are we saying we don't like that company or are not part of the niche audience they appeal too? But then isn't that why its niche?

So we're basically saying that we are with the mainstream opinion and say we don't like the company's games, and that they're overrated as other people like their games here on GAF as being part of their niche audience?

Platinum Games/ Clover is what first came to mind. Besides Viewtiful Joe 1, I have always been disappointed by their games. Game length doesn't matter to me, but game design does. Treasure excels in making amazing arcade style games, Platinum to me comes across as average but with a fan following. I've seen a lot of people on NeoaGaf praise Kamiya like a god.

Told myself I wasn't going to participate in throwing the hate around but this is so true. Telltale earns a spot right beside them in my books. Simple things like movement and navigating menus shouldn't be such a chore.

I used to think this and I still feel the gameplay is typically the weakest part of their games vs. their world/character crafting, but lately I've been playing quite a bit of Double Fine content and truth be told I think they do a fairly solid job in the gameplay department. I don't think their overrated because what you see folks praise most times is the wonderful art, clever writing and cool characters. Those are really cool things that separate their games from the rest of the pack. I do think Psychonauts had some very cool gameplay stuff, I really enjoyed the level where you helped fix a play; cool change of pace. The end level stunk though, left a terrible taste in my mouth.

I used the word cool too many times in this post but I'm gonna live with it.
