I'm honestly stuck on the thread title, have been for 10 minutes.

From my understanding this thread is about criticizing things that are underrated but overrated when it comes to specific fan bases. That doesn't make sense, games have merit, games have issues, go from there. Perception battles are the worst because everyone can be operating on separate perspectives.

that's quite different from what i got: I think the OP wants us to name those devs who we think are overrated by their specific fanbases, who constantly claim they're underrated and should get more attention.

That makes just as little sense. Niche studios are niche for many reasons, wouldn't someone finding a niche studio's output unappealing or underwhelming justify why they're a niche studio to begin with?

valve's whichever subcontracters/studios were in charge of updating cs for cscd and source. It took till go to get it right.

Even though this thread topic is about as unappealing as can be, I find it hilarious people mentioning Platinum and at the same time saying that Clover Studio was better. Clover is a much more appropriate answer. You can't even say their best games (Viewtiful Joe, Okami and God Hand) were objectively better than the best of Platinum's output since they aren't the same types of games. Okami has no Platinum equivalent, and Anarchy Reigns/Max Anarchy and MadWorld, while relatively close to God Hand, are on the low end of the P* spectrum. Bayonetta is better at what it sets out to do than any Clover game and from what I've heard, Wonderful 101 is better than Viewtiful Joe (but, again, they're not directly comparable).

I loved Okami, yet it gets touted as a better Zelda game than Zelda games despite having little in the way of involving/challenging puzzles/combat. The VJ sequels were poorly received, leaving only Okami, God Hand and VJ as Clover's good games. compare that to Bayo (and soon Bayo 2), Wonderful 101, Metal Gear Rising and Vanquish, all popular, well received games, and, compared to Clover, it's hard to call Platinum underrated despite there being many who believe "there's nothing to them beyond gameplay."
