Most recognizable sound effects in gaming

Came in to add this[Doom door]. I see I was beaten. Good catch Skirn.

I thought I heard it in a movie or TV show I'd seen recently but I can't recall what it was I was watching. But I pickup on this sound in games all the time.
I have this sfx in my library (television editor) I use it often ;) It's called something really utilitarian with a bunch of numbers in it with the name "Mike McDonough" attached at the end (most likely the sound designer).

Major Nelson even had the sound as a downloadable ringtone on his blog.

this really is not even on the list

Music, not SFX. Sorry. But the Kupo! and Kweyh! (Chocobo's) deserve to be up there.

the pointing hand cursor (and the noise it makes when you select something) is the most prominent Final Fantasy sound effect to me. :)

Checking his "Credits" page doesn't show Doom. http://www.mcdonoughsound.com/

I wonder if Doom "borrowed" the sound from an earlier game?

The big 3;

1. Pac-man dying
2. Mario Jump/Coin
3. Sonic Ring

I really wonder though if anyone would get our favorites...going over all of these are like old hat to me and are instantly recognizable, and really I am not that hardcore (says me with the NeoGAF account... :/ )

As a kid I would on world maps and whatever else just to listen to the music for awhile and either hangout or explore. I have always loved videogame music for whatever reason...even sometimes just as much or more than the game itself, lol.

Vanilla Dome in Super Mario World!

EDIT: OMG, I just thought of the Resident Evil save room... I would leave my Playstation on all afternoon just listening to that over... and over... and over!

Yeah I noticed the Sonic cash register thing, too.

also that damn police radio sound effect that shows up everywhere. some lady saying seven eight something something code six...

No one is going to have a clue what I'm talking about but there's this 'alien scream' sound that goes like "WOOO-ARRR-IACK" and I've heard it off and on over the years.

First in this old program called Creative Writer.
Then in a TV commercial for Panzer Dragoon Orta.
Then again last year as a sound effect for a monster in some game, Dead Space or Mass Effect or something. Can't remember.

It's very distinctive to me.

EDIT: GODDAMN ScOULaris I found it, finally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33ZDnmGJaBg The last dragon scream at the end.

Great ad by the way. "For graceful fury there's no power greater than X."

Strangely enough, I think I know the scream you speak of. Nice onomatopoeia.

Think you could track down a clip of it online?

The "BLIP" sound from Silent Hill (the one you hear after picking up an item) is so great, recognizable to everyone who have played the series. Also the radio static

Most Mario noises.

- 1up
- Mushroom powerup
- jump
- coin
- goomba squish
- death

Zelda "puzzle solved" and "item found" chimes.

The Gears of War meat squish sound, like when you run through the remains of a Locust after gibbing it with the Gnasher shotgun.

The Assassin's Creed 2 "mission accepted" sound is used on some Japanese TV show all the time and I always turn my head when I hear it.

Semi-OT: I always liked the AC1 "discovered something/picked up a flag" sound. I actually recorded it and am using it as my e-mail notification sound on my phone.

You're doing it wrong , all your entries sucked<,<

Anyhow, OP pretty much /threaded it right away.
The jumping sound from quake is possibly another one. 'hoah'

This should be a well known one too.

Also the 'seeegaaaa' disclaimer when you start a genesis/mega drive (can't find it immediately on youtube) and the Sony Psx splash screen sound have to be some of the most recognisable.

Still gives me chills, magical.

Searched for EverQuest and Street Fighter II, didn't find them.

Street Fighter II is filled with sound effects that are drilled into my brain. I guess the Ryu/Ken high-pitched "Hadouken!" is the ubiquitous one. You couldn't go in a corner store between the years of 1991 and 1995 or so without hearing that.

EverQuest's level-up "ding" was like crack to people. Very satisfying sound, partly because of what it meant.
