Most underrated games you have played

This. Casual, quick playing RTS, with a pretty innovative Barracks allowing you to customize units in your battalion.

One of my all time favourite survival horrors.

Bought it on a whim, after seeing it discounted at 9 bucks for a couple weeks.

I played this game a few times and loved it. I remember how impressive the thought they put into the puzzles was. The sequel was good but not great.

It was advertised... It was well-reviewed and well-received by those who've played it... And it STILL underperformed! A damn shame because this game was great, and does a ton right! And it doesn't help that now the I.P. is in bullshit limbo by a company who just wants to hold onto it and not do anything with it.

Geist, man... This game may have not done anything spectacular in terms of gunplay and the writing switches between passable and stupid. but damn, it's puzzle mechanics were firing on all cylinders and the game was build around that. But man, did it underperform. Hell, people barely remember that this game was even a thing!

You know what? I don't care if it's only been a few months. I'm calling it now. Unless this somehow gets the same stroke of a second chances like Advance Wars or Fire Emblem ,(Before Awakening) This is going to be one of those titles. The titles that are for whatever reason was shun by a lot of people at launch, but will still have a core audience that loves it and still supports it. Then many years later when Nintendo tosses it's last fuck to give out the window and copies cost an arm and leg, people are going to want a sequel after ponying up absurd amounts of cash or through other means.

It's a great game that got way too much bullshit at launch. But is fun and has enough potential to expand into a damn good series.
You hit a lot of nails.

Still the most pure fun I've ever had in an online racing/driving game...

I completely agree.

There has been no other online racing game that has given me as much joy as Midtown Madness 3 did :)

I also had an excellent list of XBL friends at the time, which made it all the better.

one of the the best kart racers also received pretty good reviews, but was massively overlooked because it wasn't mario kart and has long loading times.

Currently, this. Recently, I got back into game, after a 5 year break, and, it still has a surprisingly, strong and dedicated community. Mostly, good people with a few expected bad apples (certain cheaters, aparently) inbetween. It has aged pretty well. Forgot how fun the core gameplay is. It still holds up.

Btw: The long loading times have been significantly decreased.

A personal pick is DJ Hero:

Another game I don't really hear a lot of people talk about is Mega Man X: Command Mission for the PS2 and Gamecube. I know it sounds like pretty much the worst thing on paper. Mega Man X games are not exactly known for their excellent story-telling and robust 3D gameplay. This also followed Mega Man X7, the Sonic 06 of the franchise. The game also has some balancing and encounter rate problems.

So why am I even bringing it up then? Mostly because I think that in spirit, this was Breath of Fire 6. It shares plenty of mechanical similarities, and just carries the same feel. I'm not going to pretend it's an amazing game or anything, but I had a good time with it, and I think Breath of Fire fans could find some stuff to like about it too.

Strong production values, smooth TPS mechanics featuring solid ghost hunting mechanics, well designed areas (especially the 2nd location), and good sound and music, and voice acting, with some surprisingly high profile casting choices. And there is rarely any discussion about it, save for these kinds of threads.

The greatest co-op title ever made in my opinion, and one of the most interesting takes on the FPS genre (from a pure gameplay mechanics perspective). Between the gunplay, vaulting, and hacking, the combat had a very unique sense of flow that I don't think any other game has quite been able to match. Many people were offended by the title being attached to an FPS and most never gave the game even a cursory inspection unfortunately.

This.

I definitely consider it to be the greatest co-op FPS ever made.

Alan Wake
Crackdown
Killzone ShadowFall (was jizzed over for graphics pre launch but then panned and forgotten on release)
Infamous First Light
Maximo
Punch Out Wii
Split/Second Velocity

Warhawk ps3

Greatest multiplayer game I've played. Over 3000 hours and never got bored. It's community loved it but the community was small

Lots of good stuff already mentioned. Sakura Wars, Code Name STEAM, Alpha Protocol 3D Dot Game Heroes, Popful Mail...

Gotta make sure to throw this one in. Fun old-school style post-apoc JRPG with tanks, customization of tanks, puppies with rocket launchers, several endings, weirdness, lots to see, and unfortunately released kinda late into the PS2's lifespan with a really ugly US box art.

Beyond Good & Evil - Loveable cast of characters with a really unique world. Game was a commercial failure, people apparently didn't care for it. :(
Alice: Madness Returns - I thought it was a beautiful and memorable game with a memorable story, certainly not a perfect game as it does drag on too long, but the good overwhelms the bad for me
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - underrated because multiple factors prevented many people from playing it. 1) it was on the GameCube so most of the Sony FF fanbase ignored it 2) you needed GBAs. But when you actually had 4 GBAs and 4 people together, it was one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had and I still haven't seen another game replicate it. The DS games just weren't the same.
Penumbra: A hidden gem as far as horror games go. Amnesia gets all the attention but its predecessor Penumbra was just as awesome of a horror game, if not moreso. I liked the story and setting of Penumbra much more than Amnesia (in which it frankly made no damn sense most of the time).
Sonic Adventure - Yes, you heard me right. This game is hated by many, and I won't even deny their reasons for doing so, because it's definitely not aged well (and I'd rather play Bubsy 3D than play as Big again). But back during its release, this game blew me away as a kid and I still have good memories of it. I've spent more hours breeding Chaos than playing any other pet simulator game, not even Nintendogs managed to keep my attention as long as Sonic Adventure's chao sidegame did. And aside from Chao stuff, the game had a killer soundtrack, colorful and memorable levels, and really big hub worlds I enjoyed exploring.

Remember Me, interesting and invivative yet flawed combat system, fantastic art direction and a unique time remixing mechanic. The story was pretty good as well, I can't think of a single person I know personally that played this game.

And also has the most ironic name possible considering.

this criminally underrated JRPG would've been sold and played by alot more players if it is also released on the PS3....

I'm sorry Xbox fans but even you need to acknowledge that i am right on this.

That the reason this is rarely mentioned in the list of JRPGs greats is because it's not played by alot of people due to it released on the wrong platform. :(

I'll go with Fallout Tactics
256px-Fallout_Tactics_Box.jpg

It has aged and has a few faults / bugs, but the first half of the game really has a strong and immersive tactical / survival atmosphere (especially in iron mode, screw you mutant base). Later on, once in power armor, the game fall off as you care less and less about the danger.
But with the success of xcom, the nostalgia for TRPG and the brand power of Fallout I am always surprised that this game doesnt get more visibility.

secondsight_ps2box_usa_org_001boxart_160w.jpg

Second Sight was a fantastic 3rd person action adventure game by the Timesplitters guys (Free Radical). It looks amazing and It's aged remarkably well. I can still happily play it today. Think of it like Psi_Ops with less gunplay and more stealth/puzzles but has a nice bit of gore thrown in.

Vanquish: A Platinum game directed by Shinji Mikami with robo-suits and over the top action and a plot to match. Sounds like a dream come true right? Unfortunately it bombed considering the talent behind it. Great game you can pickup for around ÂŁ3 pre-owned.

BG&E reviewed quite well but never really hit the dizzying heights that the gameplay and story deserve. I still play through the HD release on a yearly basis. Such a shame we'll never see a sequel released.

Resistance_3_box_artwork.png

Th closest thing to Half Life 3 e'll likely ever see

Bought this around a year ago as it is one of the few shooters with PS Move support. I've still not tried it though.

I played Aaru's Awakening when it was on PS+ lately.

It seems almost everyone hated it because of its high difficulty, but I really enjoyed it. I like a challenge and found the teleportation gameplay interesting.

Also, the game was gorgeous.

watch-dogs-ps4_3.jpg

So, it didn't live up to everyones expectations, but it's not a bad game. Cool world to walk in, fun multiplayer, controls work absolutely fine.

I still think people only hated this game, because they were so very much excited when it was first showed.
I myself played it long after release (around 2 months ago actually), and I liked the game a lot more than I thought.

in my top 3 of last gen:

final_fantasy_crystal_chronicles_my_life_as_a_king_1.jpg

Everything about this game worked for me

I dont know if this game is actually any good or not. I think it was in a nintendo power magazine (along with the illusion of gaia tips maybe?) and I thought it was the coolest idea for an RPG. I didn't play it until like 9 years later and really liked what I played

but if it wasnt for MS it wouldn't have came out to begin with anyway though :( they should have at least ported it to PC.

Heres my list:

Expeditions: Conquistador

Outside of places like Codex you hardly hear about it and it's a shame because it's a slightly flawed masterpieces.

King's Bounty series - absolutely enormous games, polished, sleek intarfaces, good turn based combat, rpg elements - mechanics wise I prefer it to HoMM series. Yet almost no one talks about it.

Xenonauts - every modern tbs fan yaps about Xcom: EU but so few mention the real deal - Xenonauts.

Vanquish: A Platinum game directed by Shinji Mikami with robo-suits and over the top action and a plot to match. Sounds like a dream come true right? Unfortunately it bombed considering the talent behind it. Great game you can pickup for around ÂŁ3 pre-owned.

Vanquish is the prime example of the difference between 'underrated' and 'underbought'. 84 Meta and being beloved by its cult audience couldn't possibly lend it to being underrated. It's just too bad it didn't sell as well as it deserved to.

Path of Exile. Even though game is recognizable and got really great reviews the population of this game on Steam is quite small for its quality.
GGG deserves better, much better.

Edit >

Just thought of another one.

Jet Force Gemini on N64

Agreed on these two. Geist was especially underrated. Solid puzzle solving really set it apart from other shooters at the time IMO, even if the gunplay was mostly average and the framerate wasn't great. I think if it had been released on more powerful hardware (like the Wii U), it would have fared much, much better.
