Motel 6 Admits Arizona Sites Were Reporting Guests To ICE Without Chain’s Approval

Full Story
Employees at Motel 6 locations in Phoenix have ceased working with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents in light of a new report that revealed motel staffers were reporting guests who appear to be undocumented immigrants, according to a spokeswoman for the motel chain.

Raiza Rehkoff, the director of public relations and marketing for the motel chain’s parent company, G6 Hospitality, told HuffPost that staff members were working with ICE without the approval of senior management, but it ended last week when management found out.

“Regarding recent media story on Phoenix-area location, this was implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management,” Rehkoff said in an emailed statement. “When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued. We are currently investigating and will provide more information shortly.”

Rehkoff did not respond to HuffPost’s questions about whether Motel 6 condemned the employees actions ― i.e., sharing guest information with ICE ― or whether any staff members would face disciplinary actions.

We send a report every morning to ICE — all the names of everybody that comes in,” an unidentified front-desk clerk explained to the New Times. “Every morning at about 5 o’clock, we do the audit and we push a button and it sends it to ICE.”

Law enforcement officials are barred by a 2015 Supreme Court ruling from forcing hotels to turn in guest information, which may suggest that the Motel 6 employees had volunteered to work with ICE agents.

Empowered by the Trump administration and President Donald Trump’s promise to severely crack down on illegal immigration, ICE agents have ramped up efforts to arrest undocumented immigrants. In June, ICE Director Thomas Homan had warned that all undocumented immigrants “need to be worried” and said that ICE would also go after non-criminal undocumented people. The agency “shouldn’t play favorites,” he told the House Appropriations Committee’s Homeland Security Subcommittee.

And these efforts have seen results: Within Trump’s first 100 days in office, the arrests of suspected illegal immigrants rose nearly 40 percent.

I mean still ill intentions, but that was the process I guess.

Humanity had a good run. FUCK MOTEL 6.

Humanity is over because Motel 6 employees, without management approval, called ICE.

Since both locations are in predominately Latino areas, I'd expect lots of vandalism in the coming weeks. It can't be safe for the employees there now.

I was staying in a Motel 6 here in Phoenix (I17 & Northern) and checked out of my room at about 6 AM. I made it down to the bus stop, and out of the corner of my eye I see a cop rolling up on me. He told me to get my hands on my head and that I was under arrest.

He told me that they reviewed security footage from the lobby and saw the direction that I was going and happened to see me at the bus stop. I did have a warrant out for my arrest so I take responsibility for my actions.

That being said, I found out that Motel 6 emails a list of every occupant to the maricopa county sheriffs office and they go ahead and run your information. If they get a hit on you, they drive down and knock on your door and arrest you. It feels like it is an extreme violation of someones privacy, but then again I did not read all the fine print when I signed my room papers.

I'm just pointing out that this does not just happen to immigrants. I am white btw.

Motel 6 did not know about it. Man, all you have to do is read the OP.

They haven't been fired, so I call bullshit.
That may be more tricky than it seems due to the employees claiming they were fired for refusing to turn away from illegal activity. I'm sure their lawyers are telling them to not do anything for now.

Naturally, rumors run rampant. Denise Aguilar, a Chandler-based immigration attorney, said that one of her clients is currently being held in ICE custody alongside several others who were detained at the same Motel 6.

“They have heard (no telling how valid the info is) that ICE is paying $200 per person for the front-desk clerk to report,” she wrote in an email.

Disgusting people if the rumor is true.

People who support this on twitter are the usual types that would scream for revolution if a black president were keeping a list of what names were checked into what hotels.

Had a serious conversation last week about the rumored upcoming wave of hunts for undocumented people and how best my household could hide people during that period. I'm still trying to get through the "this is happening in 2017" phase.

The subhuman waste taking $200 a head for turning over these people to ICE are the ones who need to be deported. Fuck ICE, fuck those motel workers and anyone who side with them. It's not just stupidity, or lack of thought, but a complete lack of humanity.

If that's true did ICE and the employees break the law?
