Moto X |OT| Hello, Moto

Wow, I knew Moto X was one of the recommended current phones along with HTC One and my personal favorite Xperia Z1S, but after looking into it more, those special cores allowing always on voice recognition and retain battery life sounds pretty damn awesome.

They are awesome. I know it's not the most powerful phone out there right now but for me it's great. I've consistently been getting 16 hours of battery life and absolutely love that I can call, text, set an alarm, search google, all without even touching my phone. It's a great phone if those things are important to you and the highest specs are not.

Build quality is top notch as well. It feels soo good in the hand.

I'm about 24 hours into my Moto X, and I absolutely love it. The excellent build quality, fluid animation, and touchless control -- it's a special phone for sure.

Now the tough decision -- which case to buy?

I've been looking at the Otterbox Commuter. Seems to be slim enough to not bulk it up too much, and should provide enough protection.

So my Verizon bill jacked up after they finally removed an employee discount I'm no longer eligible for. I am grandfathered into unlimited data, but the 98$/mo fee is unacceptable, especially when next semester kicks in and I'll have less time to work. I'm also kind of tired and annoyed by my s3. It's a lot to explain, but I got a bigger battery and it's done something to the weight distribution or whatever and shit shit is hard to hold or use while lying in bed.

Anyway that doesn't really matter. What I'm here for is this: which carrier, that let's me customize the X, who has unlimited data is the best for the southwest? I'm thinking T-Mobile currently. How much is it to get on contract with T-Mobile to get this phone right now?

The phone is $99 on moto maker through tmobile I believe. I've been putting together the payback periods of this and the nexus5 on different networks switching from my $125/mo verizon unlimited plan (ugh).

I was going to buy off contract in case I didn't like Tmo, but I realized that even with a $200 ETF if I cancel and the phone for $99 it pays for itself in 4 months (tmo @ $70/mo unlimited). Kind of a no brainer. I'm in Colorado btw, not quite the southwest but close, and tmo is pretty good in major metro areas according to my local sources.

EDIT: I'm going through the motomaker process to find the terms. I want to make sure there's nothing in addition to the ETF (like refunding the difference in the price of the phone). Will report back.

EDIT2: Interesting tidbit from moto's terms:
PLAN
You have to get a service plan on your phone to activate it. Those come from separate companies, and the plan is between you and them; Motorola isn’t a part of it. Be aware that they might charge you for canceling your plan early. Some carriers have a trial period with no cancelation fee at the end, but if you try to use that to get a phone without a plan at a reduced price, Motorola will charge you more than it would have cost to buy the phone without the plan in the first place. If you purchase a MOTO X made with Moto Maker and you cancel your plan early, but do not return your device, Motorola may charge you $300 for the unreturned device.

I lied. Tmo doesn't offer a subsidized phone through moto maker. It's $499 straight out.

Upgraded to Kit Kat and ART yesterday. ART does seem to have a pretty great impact on my idle battery life. Glad I went with the X with such a speedy delivery of Kit Kat.

I've seen other people say switching to ART hurts battery life. Is it supposed to help?

But I guess my first question should have been what is ART?

Also, about a week into having my moto x and I'm moving it. My only grippe is that it's still to big, but almost no phone are small lately.

As a Verizon customer with 2 grandfathered unlimited 4g plans, this looks to be my best (only) option. As much as I'd love to get the Nexus 5, it's just not coming to Verizon and I'll be damned if I'm dropping $500+ on a S4.

Went with a Nexus 5 over this. Almost regret it. I'd get this phone if I had known about the cyber Monday deal. Dat touchless control. Oh well, still can't wait for my N5 to come!

I'm in the same boat. Tried out the Moto X at a Verizon store today and was very impressed, it's like a much more refined version of my Galaxy Nexus. Now to decide on a color combo...

That's a good combo, and the red is not nearly as 'candy' as it looks on the Moto maker site so it looks much better in person.

I like that the Verizon store had all the different color backs in person. Black front is a must, leaning either flat black or the black weave for the back right now. Red or silver accents. The black metallic accent is more of a gunmetal in person, not nearly as dark as the website suggests. I'd consider going white for the back, but not sure how it holds up with dirt

Ended up getting the color I picked out earlier in this thread. The mint green is very muted, but I like it. And the black accents seem to be the only ones I liked.

ART is a different method of compiling code. The previous (well, current) method is Dalvik, which uses a "Just-in-Time" compiler, which has to run through code each and every time you open an app. ART utilizes "Ahead-of-Time" compilation, which means apps no longer have to interpret a bunch of code each time. The trade off is that the ART/Ahead-of-time compiled apps take up more space, but are quicker to load. Whereas Dalvik/Just-in-time apps are slower to load, but have a lighter foot-print on your device.

In theory, ART uses less battery power because less work is being done each time an app is opened. Practically though, the difference probably isn't that noticeable. On my Nexus 5, I'm experiencing slightly better battery life, but it's possibly just a placebo effect - if there is a difference, it's probably only 15-20 additional minutes of screen-on time. Opening apps does seem to be a bit more snappy, though.

I guess motorola.com servers crashed this morning. I still haven't seen the updated prices. Guess maybe I will pass on this one.

So there's no way to silence the phone without unlocking? My friend misses that feature on the iPhone.

I played with the X for the first time a few days back and was surprised it had almost no input lag compared to the other flagships around it (xperia, GS4). That's something I never hear mentioned about it in reviews.

I've heard that Moto's really optimized the touch drivers in a way that Google can't do on the Nexus line because they can't do chipset manufacturer-specific enhancements. So in the end I think Moto's phones will always be slightly more responsive.

But it is! The Anandtech review showed it performing as well and sometimes better than Snapdragon 600 devices (Galaxy S4, HTC One) thanks to the two CPU cores being able to run much faster. The GPU is similar, but powering 50% fewer pixels and the storage is AFAIK the fastest on any Android phone and will stay fast even when the devices is almost full.

I hate when people say it's specs aren't high end because the numbers show just the opposite. Right now dual core doesn't make much sense on a mobile device and we see that with Apple devices and Ultrabooks both using dual cores while still being much faster than quad core. Think of your phone as a small kitchen and how it doesn't make much sense to squeeze more chefs into it. You want better chefs.

any news of this coming to UK? I'm looking for a phone upgrade and this looks like the best phone out there, problem is it's not available right now :/

Some random sites said a Moto exc. hinted at it coming to Europe in the Moto G announcement. Don't even have the Moto G here in Norway though :(

If there's no more info on it coming to Europe in January I think I'll import it from Canada (they have LTE 2600Mhz). My phone is dying and while I could buy a different phone I flat out don't want any of them. They're just too flawed in comparison (size, specs, ease of use) and the Nexus 5 is hardly any cheaper than any other high end phone (same price as 32GB G2).

I am thinking of buying this phone tomorrow... The discounted price seems to be awesome and hopefully this time things will work better than they did yesterday. So for $350 I can get an unlocked Moto X that works anywhere, right? I am in Europe and I am thinking about sending this to a friend in the US. I hope that besides some LTE bands everything else is ok for us Europeans. If anyone has a clue let me know if I am mistaken.

From what I understand the developer's edition (GSM) works out of the box with any sim card and the AT&T and T-Mobile ones are GSM compatible but first they have to be unlocked?

Check the LTE bands in your country/area. Common bands in Europe are as far as I know band 3 and 7 (2600Mhz and 1800Mhz). There are different versions with supporting different bands. I live in Norway where we only have those two bands and for me the only version that will work on the LTE network is the Canadian because it supports band 7 (2600Mhz).

I have no idea about unlocking it though :(

Edit: The version with band 7 is called XT1058, but it is also sold in the US and so far I've only managed to confirm that Canadian XT1058 supports band 7. Band 20 (800Mhz) also seems common in Europe, but no Moto X seems to support that. Source for LTE networks around the world.

Ty4on thanks for the reply, I don't mind about the 4G feature that much though, all I want is an unlocked phone.

People claim that the T-Mobile version is SIM unlocked, can anyone confirm this or do you know how I could confirm this? Worst-case there are websites that send you a code in order to unlock the phone, right?

Any help would be appreciated for us Eurogaffers.

The T-Mobile one is unlocked. I don't even think it comes with the nano-sim.

They really should just drop it to 350 off contract for good, seeing how it's actually worth that.

If I'm still able to get it for around that off-contract come jan when my contract with big red is up, I'll get the Moto X, but it'll be the N5 otherwise.

So you are sure that it will work with any SIM out of the box? Can you give me a link that confirms this?

I don't know about Europe. All I know is that it uses a Nono Sim and they do offer it in both GSM and CDMA. You'll have to check the carrier you plan on using to see which one you need. I don't know if you get the choice through Moto X Maker though.

Anyone get their Moto X engraved? Thinking of getting my initials done on it, but it looks really stupid on the Motomaker website...wondering how it looks in reality.
