Moto X |OT| Hello, Moto

Haha. So my dad used my upgrade on his new phone, but I transferred my mom's upgrade to my phone. Amazon still shows me as having an upgrade in 2 years. Any idea how long it takes for Amazon to recognize the new upgrade time?

The Bamboo back with white front and black accents has to be the sexiest "legit" aesthetic I've ever seen in this form factor

It looks like something someone would have slaved for months to create as a custom design. Ordinarily the idea of paying $100 for an option purely to make a phone prettier would strike me as ludicrous but I'd be all over this (if I were able to upgrade before June -_-).

It's so unbelievably gorgeous in person.

Looking to buy this for our 9-year-old son for his first phone. He's very comfortable using my Android phone, and I can add one to our VZW plan for $99 plus the monthly phone charge.

Any reason not to get him this?

It's a great phone for anyone, assuming you can take care of the damage and parental control issues as with any device.

The only reason I can think of not to is if you don't want to sign a contract. You can get the Moto G for the same price but without the 2-year agreement. The major difference is lack of LTE, so it depends how important that is to you.

Thanks! I'm OK with the contract, and he's proven himself responsible with his 3DS XL, so once I through a case on it, I think I'll feel pretty good about it. We have a Ninja-colored one headed our way, and now I get to make up rules for its use!

9? damn. I had a pager when I was 13, and a phone at 16.

If you could post a follow up about how you handed parental controls and whatnot I'd appreciate. We got my 9 year old nephew a tablet but apart from not letting him buy stuff and no internet browsing it's hard to police usage.

Orange, black, and white accents all look great with bamboo + white front.

I'd love a bamboo Moto X, but $$$ + giving up iOS apps, I don't know... it's my favorite looking phone on the market, maybe tied with white/silver+white/gold 5S. Beautiful device. If I was looking to upgrade it would be seriously hard to pass on.

Definitely envious of those who own one (though I've never seen a Moto X in the wild).

Yeah...Uhm...Why does your 9 year old need a cell phone?

I had this for a few days, It's beautiful, feels great, and you feel like a boss with it.

If you can justify the extra cost, do it.

To keep in touch during his after-school activities, in the event of an emergency, so reach him if he's off at a friend's house. All sorts of reasons, and most kids in his fourth-grade class have smartphones at this point.

what apps are you giving up?

what apps are you giving up?
Filmic Pro, Connu, Coursera, PureShot, a few games (mostly Simogo's output)... f.lux and Zephyr for jailbreak apps. I don't really want to get into an argument for iOS vs Play apps here. Maybe soon they will be equivalent. For now my needs are met by the App Store, and that's something I'd have to sacrifice.

I would like to know what app you're worried about, too. I made the switch a couple of months ago, and the only thing I miss are the games (mainly all the board/card games) and Game Center. Otherwise, the screen is bigger, and the OS is much more customizable.

Plus, IOS7 kinda helped me make up my mind.

See above.

I like the experience of iOS despite its walled garden. I've modified it enough w/ jailbreak apps that it works well even in native weak spots. I've used Android phones before and found them lacking (Droid Bionic, Razr Maxx); these are older phones and things have changed, but I am familiar with "larger screen sizes" and the Google ecosystem. The Moto X is appealing because it has features that seem to transcend novelty, which is a rare distinction among android handsets. Its look speaks for itself. Still, there are areas it lacks (camera), and some future support is uncertain (it's shown early promise w/ quick updates, but I've been burned by Motorola before, even since they were bought). I say all this because I want to avoid another tired iOS vs Android debate... You don't need to convert me, I am aware of strengths and weaknesses for both platforms, it's just that right now I am attracted more toward the wide support of the App Store and hardware of Apple's products. The Moto X looks like an excellent phone. I'd probably be happy with it. But I know I am happy now with what I have, and I don't have to compromise within Apple's system, as a self-contained thing.

Style, performance, and battery life are all things I am good with on the Moto X. I am most wary about future support and app selection. Yes it is more comparable to iOS every day, but it's not there yet, and iOS still gets many new apps first or exclusively.

If I could afford a second device, it would be a Moto X, no question.

Not that I don't appreciate the eagerness to help. I'm just tired of the ubiquitous phone wars online, and would like to preemptively bow out if it comes to that.

wasn't a phone war, just trying to see if we could identify alternatives. off the top of my head, Lux does the same thing as f.lux, for instance.

That's useful to know, thanks.

Didn't mean to attack anyone. I'm just used to seeing any conversation about phones quickly boil to the same old routine.

Sorry, I didn't see your post before I posted mine.

I didn't mean to start an OS war, and that was not my intention.

I ran IOS 5 jailbreak for along time, just so I could get more functionality from the OS. After a while, even though I love the games on App store, I got sick of opening an app just for some info. I basically missed widgets, and couldn't find anything that would do that, even jailbroken.

I know how you feel about some apps not coming over to Android, too. Coursera doesn't have an official app (there are 2 unofficial). I miss Lost Cities immensely. As for Zephyr, there are some apps, but I'm not too hip on their looks, and I'm happy with the app switcher that is default on the X.

Good luck.

So (finally) Motorola teased the Moto X's European release.
http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2014/01/07/motorola-moto-x-uk-launch-set-with-invite-tease/

Does anyone think that due to the delay between the US and UK (and hopefully EU) release we 'll get a better price or some kind of bump in specs? I really want that phone but if the price is above 400EUR for a phone that has been out for a few months already then I think that I will have to go for another phone..

Just got my Moto X and I thought I'd stop by here to get advice on what I need to do to make it run as efficiently/quickly as possible. Haven't really delved into Android phones too deeply so if you have any helpful advice please feel free to share it.

I am usually one to tinker around with my phone and flash various OS's but with the Moto X I'm perfectly content with staying on stock rom. A few weeks ago I got the Android 4.4 update and it made everything just a little bit more buttery smooth than it was before.

Others may have some more constructive tips but I'm completely happy with mine the way it is. No touch voice commands is now something I could not imagine a phone I get not having.

Give it a shot for a few weeks before you start tinkering with it. Moto has done a great job with the moto phones.

Finally picked up a Moto X. Was on the fence for a while, but with the Nexus family being shunned by Verizon, it seems Motorola is our only choice for those of us who doesn't want to lose unlimited. Upgraded a family member's line and transferred it after activating on that line. I took advantage of the TodayShow50 deal and amazingly enough, Verizon also had a $50-dollars-off Holiday sale. I was able to get a 32GB version for cheap along with 50% off a clear case (which, after a month, sucks because I already have stress fractures near the camera cutout).

Thought the shake-for-camera function would be way gimmicky, but I must say, I love using it. Especially now that 'Im trying this whole "1 Second a Day" app - it makes it super easy to access. After about a month, I'm really happy with it.

I just recently got the phone as well; outside of the terrible camera it's a really great phone. I wish I had known about Moto Maker beforehand though; the all-black version I got from the store is terrifically boring. I wonder if I can swap it out for a custom made one....

I think they realized that in order to create/sustain momentum they have to be aggressive with the pricing. It's also buying them a lot of goodwill and even if the X2 is priced like the X originally was, it'll get a lot more excitement I think.

Is it possible to use a customized Moto X on a low-cost service like Republic wireless? I have $350 saved toward a new iPad but I'd be okay using it for a Moto X if I could cut my monthly cell bill at the same time.

Hi, I just got a new one very cheap, but is carrier locked to Nextel, does anyone knows a reliable site that sell the unlock codes?

I don't believe a Moto Maker model can work with Republic Wireless, since their network is funky. Good question though, maybe someone else can chime in.

updated to 4.2.2 yesterday. don't notice a difference yet..

unrelated, has anyone cleaned the softtouch plastic on the back of the x? the edges of my red one are darkening (probably from being in jeans all the time). Looking for suggestions.

Having some serious battery problems on a brand new Moto X, not sure whether something is seriously wrong:

If this continues, then it's likely a battery fault and you need a replacement. The obvious suggestion is a reboot and/or factory reset in case there's some weird software bug at play here, though it seems unlikely.

Ye I've tried the factory reset and that didn't solve it. Going to charge up and run down the
battery a couple of times to see if it isn't some wearing-in problem and then I'll take it back. Really annoying since the great battery life was one if the main factors that attracted me to the phone in the first place.

I kinda wish my Nexus 4 had the same problem. I constantly forget to disconnect it when it reaches 85%. I try to keep it between 40-85 for longevity and because I'm often near an outlet.

Does it do the same with the supplied charger and is the battery life otherwise like normal?

Moto X is $0.01 right now on contract, heads up for anyone on the fence.

It's very tempting. I can get a 32GB, natural finish model for less than $100. But then I'm stuck in a 2-yr contract, and damn it, I'm tired of Verizon wringing out my blood.

I love the iOS experience on my 4S (iOS 6), but it is cramped for space (16GB) and I am willing to give Android another shot. I don't know what to do here. Ultimately I should be trying to save as much cash as possible but that price is a steal. And I don't lose my 4S. If I were to upgrade to another iPhone it wouldn't be til the 6S, and if Apple holds to their typical release schedule that works out well for me. But man, I don't like the idea of being tied to another contract.

Is the battery life manageable on Moto X, meaning do you need to worry about the battery at all, currently I have the thunderbolt with a extended battery and I can run the phone with high brightness and not worry about the battery all day.

Cab that be done on Moto X?

In my experience, no.
