Motorola "Razr" brand returning as foldable phone. (flip phone style!) Coming soon in the summer.

There have been rumors and reports of the possible resurgence of the iconic Motorola Razr in the guise of a foldable phone. The Lenovo owned Motorola was granted a patent last year that suggest it is developing a foldable phone akin to a redesigned Motorola Razr, though the firm until now was yet to comment on the reports.

Now, with the arrival of the Huawei Mate X and the Galaxy Fold, the company can’t help but shield light on what the future holds for the company. In an exclusive interview with Engadget Motorola VP of Global Product Dan Dery confirms that its firm is actually working on a folding device that would hit the shelves later in summer.
While it was earlier rumored to arrive in late February, Dan Dery is quoted as saying its firm has “no intention of coming later than everybody else in the market, “So with the Mate X and the Galaxy Fold expected in mid-year and April in that order, it is safe to assume Motorola foldable device will arrive much later in summer.

Dan further confirmed that its design choice will be entirely different from what we have seen with the likes of the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, and while he didn’t dwell on its design choice, a recent patent filing by the firm reveals the company might opt for a design that flips down into a smaller device like the original Razr.
The design if it pans out will address several concerns so far raised about the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X from Huawei including the fragility and protection of the display when in the tablet mode. It also means the device will be way more compact in the phone mode and fit better in smaller pockets if actually, it mimics the original RAZR phone to the core.

So it seems like Motorola is going to go for a "vertical" tablet design, which uh, doesn't really work for tablets, unless the phone is going to be a large rectangle when closed, THEN this approach could work. But basically they are trying to use flip phone motions for how you go between the closed fold and the open-fold, which is interesting.

Of course, based on the patents, unless is's like a big square phone when closed, it's going to be very narrow on the Y-axis even when holding it side-ways. Of course regardless of how they do it this is motorola so I'm expecting a over $2000 price and some $50-55 a month payment plan on Verizon.

It seems everyones been working on fodables in the background this whole time, who knows who else will come out, Sony? Blu...

...Blackberry? I wonder.

This actually makes sense to me.

You can have a small flip phone that extends out to a larger phablet style phone. Its a much more practical design then what Samsung and Huwai came up with and is an actual use case for a foldable phone.

Sure you don't get that big tablet like escperience with this. But you do get a small compact phone that can turn into a large screen phone.
