Movies with a predominant colour

I'm watching Amelie on Blu-Ray at the moment, and I never realised quite how green it is. I mean, I love Jeunet's style (Alien Resurrection doesn't exist, OK?), and I think the palette works beautifully for the film, but I just never noticed it before.

Now, I'm not even expressly talking about filters here, just some movies can almost be described with a colour. Here are the ones that stick out for me:

Amelie - Green

Minority Report - Blue

City of God - Orange

Avatar - Purple

Reservoir Dogs - Red

Let The Right One In - White

Micheal Bay's Entire Career - Orange

Matrix:
In the matrix: Green
In Zion: Blue

#5. Movies are Color-Coded by Genre

Have You Ever Noticed:

There's some unwritten rule that horror movies should be blue:

Saw

The Nightmare on Elm Street reboot.

Meanwhile, apocalyptic movies are gray and washed out:

Then there are more subtle ones, for instance movies set in the desert tend to be yellow. And we don't mean when they're out in the sun and sand, either. Even when indoors it'll often look like it was filmed through a jar of urine:

Smokin' Aces (Las Vegas)

The Hills Have Eyes (rural Nevada)

Movies where reality is off-kilter will be green:

The Matrix films, aka The Greenest Movies Ever Made

Honestly, half the time you can guess the genre of the film based on one still from the trailer.

What's Going On?

It's called digital color correction. Back in the day, if you wanted your movie to have an artistic, stylish color palette, you had to go through the pain in the ass process of using filters on your lights and camera, or get the footage exposed just the right way. It was expensive, it was difficult and it was limited to people who really knew what they were doing. So if someone took the trouble, it meant they had a good reason, dammit.

Now? If you're a Hollywood director, with a few clicks of the mouse you can immediately look stylish and artsy by making the audience feel like they're watching your movie through a pair of novelty sunglasses. Hell, if you've got a Mac and a thousand bucks, you can get a color-correction program and give your home movie of a toddler farting on a cat an otherworldly green tint.

The Coen brothers didn't invent it, but Oh Brother, Where Art Thou was the first movie to heavily use digital color correction, to the point that every frame was digitally colored to give it that old-timey sepia tone.

But where the Coen Brothers were creating a unique and distinct look, other directors have realized these colors are a no-cost way to create atmosphere without, you know, having to write a good script or hire competent actors. These colors are a visual shorthand for various emotions and ideas (yellows seem hotter, blue makes a scene seem lit by spooky moonlight, washed-out grays are depressing). In other words: It's just laziness.

The Matrix films, aka The Greenest Movies Ever Made

It becomes greener by the movies. It's start out like our world, then we start seeing it greener and greener as we become more 'jacked out' from the matrix, able to see the code.

I think it's a mistake to try and hold the colors of Matrix against it. It works very well within the movie.

On the topic of predominant color, not just tint in the movie:
American Beauty. Ever notice the way the colour red is used

Cries and Whispers

Vertigo (at least a small section)

oops I didn`t think you meant the color palette. Well, I think Cries and Whisper applies. Even the cuts are tinted red

Didn't they change the color timing of the first one to match the sequels? I remember the DVD having a brownish tint.

The first movie was originally more brown / green. My Blu-Ray is more blue/green. It feels more "remastered" rather than a matching job. It looks a bit crisper with that color correction.

EDIT: Hero. Aren't there 3 colours for three sections there?

Iam unsure of whether that's just the traditional classic adventure colour scheme kicking in or an attempt to make the movies warm and cosy as in 'sit, back and enjoy the lovely warm killing'

I think it's just because it's in the Egyptian deserts, which makes most of the scenes that color automatically.

I think it's also because it's set in Egypt and the Mesopotamia area and those colors kind of embody that part of the world... but I love it anyway. It's a decent movie on its own, but also one of the few I revisit on account of its coloring.

Amelie is another favorite of mine for colors <3

Fight Club isn't green.

You mean "The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy" right? (aka the "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy")

Shaun of the Dead - Red - Strawberry
Hot Fuzz - Blue - Nut?
The Worlds End - Green - Mint

No, he means Krzysztof Kieślowski's absolutely brilliant trilogy. The Double Life of Véronique is also another Kieślowski film with a very strong predominant color.

The one that sticks out in my mind that hasn't already been mentioned is Fantastic Mr. Fox - the Orange/Yellow/Gold is absolutely gorgeous.

Every Alien movie is associated with a colour, which is reflected by the boxart of their Blu-Ray special editions:

Some Pixar movies also have an obvious colour theme, such as red in The Incredibles, sky bllue in Up, deep blue in Finding Nemo, and green in Brave.

Drive did it really well because they didnt abuse color filters. Some movies go overboard and end up over saturated with black crush or washed out with loss of detail in grey scale.
