The Social Network is decent entertainment but has no lasting appeal. People 20-30 years ago arent going to bat a eye on it. Just another movie that didnt happen to be terrible

People 20-30 years ago, when asked about The Social Network:
"What channel's that? Is Dallas on?"

There was indeed an expiration date on the relevance of The Social Network. If I'm not mistaken, it was February 28, 2011.

Oh, I have no expectations, really. The Wachowskis usually entertain me at least, be it in good or bad ways.

I had high expectations, so maybe you'll be in better shape than I was. I thought it looked incredible (I don't read reviews or anything). It was just incredibly disappointing. I have no idea how competent filmmakers could have been in the editing room thinking they were putting it together properly.

Woman is the Future of Man was a pretty good first impression of Hong's work. It's not particularly eventful and is very dialogue heavy, but I found it interesting.

I get the feeling the gaf opinion is going to be quite split on it.

Hahahahahahaha

Watched Tokyo Drift of the Fast and or Furious variety.....did not enjoy it. The only good part was when Brad Taylor tried to be a badass in the beginning, otherwise, I was bored. I mean, they did drift a lot, so I guess I'll give it that much.

Saw Frances Ha today.

Phenomenal. Baumbach's best since Kicking & Screaming. Maybe even a smidge better just because, obviously, he's evolved as a filmmaker.

Just incredible. This year's Cyrus or Beginners, as in: Best Movie of 2013.

Hey, I just came back from that too.

Thought it was just alright. Left no real impression on me one way or the other, so you know, whatever. hars0n will hate it. :lol

Watched Prometheus (as well as Event Horizon and Pandorum a couple of weeks ago); and then over the last seven days watched:

- Alien (Directors Cut)
- Aliens (Special Edition)
- Alien 3 (Asssembly Cut)
- Alien Resurrection (Directors Cut)

I watched a movie called Submarine on Netflix the other day.

It's about a boy growing up in Wales in the 1980's. The whole plot is him trying to lose his virginty and trying to stop his parents from divorcing each other.

It's a great movie. I recommend anyone to go see it.

Inland Empire - Holy Christ. So, I really like David Lynch, I think he is one of the best directors when it comes to create powerfull moody atmospheres, and Inland Empire it's not an exception. It's bizarre and often horror-like, building a pretty disturbing mood throughout the whole movie. And Laura Dern does an amazing job selling it in the movie.

As for the plot...Well, I think I have a general idea of what it wants to tell, but I have too many missing holes that I expect to understand in following viewings.
It's really interesting, but at some time one has to wonder if making the movie as it is helps develop the powerfull and bizarre mood, or it just makes the movie a complete mess. I guess I will have to decide once I see the movie, at least, another time.

Not my favorite of Lynch, but a great experience in any case.

I saw 500 Days of Summer.

So...has there ever been a romance movie where the main character is miserable and the "NO UNHAPPY STORIES EVER" police doesn't ruin it?

Because I hate those guys.

The Man Who Would Be King - A John Huston adventure movie about Sean Connery and Michael Caine as British soldiers who travel to Kafiristan to become kings. Sounds pretty awesome, right? That's what I thought. Unfortunately it's not as cool as it sounds, but it's still moderately entertaining. The epic scope and scale of the movie works well, the two protagonists are fine (yet not as good as I hoped) and the plot takes some (not surprising) turns eventually leading to some interesting issues and dillema's regarding power, religion and friendship ***
Behind the Candelabra - Solid and flamboyant. also this ***½
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - It's meta, it's quirky, it's self aware and it works so well. Lovely chemistry and performances all around, fun writing, dialogues and banter and above all a very entertaining noir story ****

Blade - Snipes as the titular protagonist is cool, there are a bunch of awesome scenes (that opening in the club is so cool) and the entire backstory/setting of the vampires in our world is well done. The plot about Stephen Dorff wanting to become an ubervampire and everything surrounding it is kinda blegh ***
Blade II - Takes the parts that work from the first and adds more stuff, which at least doesn't make it worse. Del Toro's style fits well ***
Blade: Trinity - Snipes for the cool, Biel for the eyecandy, Reynolds for the comedic relief while all kicking ass at the same time. Another ubervampire plot which doesn't work as well this time around. **½

I watch Observe and Report last night. For some reason I think I saw it before, some parts I do remember seeing. I just watched "This is What Winning Looks like" it was good.

Ugh this movie made me feel like I'd just been cornered in an alley and beaten with pipes.

It's like Lynch took all the subtlety of his more horrifying material (Twin Peaks FWWM, red dress by the sink in Mullholland Drive) and decided, "Ah, what the hell, I'm just going to yell at you for two hours. Subtlety is for lame-o's."

Fast 6: Good movie with two scenes that are just a JOKE! 8/10

Hangover 3: Not bad movie but same time never better than the previous two. 7/10

Wow, really? Resonated with me now same way Kicking & Screaming did in '96.

I'm glad you clarified that, because I always thought you've been referencing the Will Ferrell soccer Kicking & Screaming, and I kept thinking "why does he love that movie so much?"

As for Frances Ha, I didn't dislike it or anything, but it felt like a very breezy movie to me. Like, it just came and went; nothing about it hit home for me personally. The only thing that did resonate with me was how much I hated everyone for being money-out-of-ass rich and renting $4000 apartments like it's no big deal. :lol

hah! i was thinking the same thing

Office Space: I watched this years ago and didn't care for it that much. I was a student then. Now, having worked for about 3 years in an office myself... This movie clicked on the second watch.
The Campaign: very uneven, but there were some moments that slayed me. The dinner confessions, the snake bite ('Am I maintaining? I think I'm maintaining' XD), 'try to catch me, ranger Rick!'
Mystic River: Enjoyed it overall, but not the best Eastwood film. The 'you're a king' monologue in the end felt really weird, out of place and poorly acted.
Hangover I & II: these were all right I guess, nothing special.
Mike Tyson singing One night in Bangkok
was a great moment though. The photo slideshows in the credits are funnier than anything in the movies.

^How does Hangover II compare to the first? I hear it's basically the same movie, but is it on the same comedic level or is it a huge step down?

It's tired in comparison, none is particularly great though. I'd say 2 is not as awful as it's made out to be, but it's practically the same movie. Almost.

I was surprised at how much II was a retread of the original's premise. They don't even try to alter the formula, it's just Hangover: Bangkok boogaloo. I didn't think the comedy in the first was that great to begin with, and II wasn't a huge step down in that regard.
I'm in the mood for a great comedy, but I'm not having any luck finding one.

Finally got around to watching Iron Man 3. Pretty well done, if not quite on the level of the first one, but I had explosion fatigue by the end. Clever twist with the Mandarin. As always, RDJ is what really makes the movie.

I really like Heat, and I think I should watch some for of Mann's films. Throw some suggestions at me guys. I also would like your opinion on his Miami Vice movie. It seems to be a polarizing film.

I have seen a few movies recently.

Zero Dark Thirty - I really enjoyed it. It was a lot of story to fit in that short of time but I was hooked the whole time. The compound raid was perfectly done I think. Precise and drama free, just as I imagine special forces would operate.

End of Watch - Hmm. I liked the style of the film and the bro cop thing worked for me because I imagine that is how a lot of young cops are. I think it was a bit too cheesy though and their luck at finding big cartel secrets was a little too good. I did really enjoy the way they operated as a team when they arrived at a scene. Seemed very legit.

I feel this movie has very little lasting appeal. I'm surprised at what a huge success it's been ($1,179 million WW).

I'm a little surprised by that as well. I don't feel any urge to see it a second time. Like, probably ever. Maybe it's just really broad appeal for a first watch that's driving it?

As long as movie ticket prices keep going up, especially for 3D showings, it'll get easier and easier to make it into the billion dollar club.

Well, for one thing Iron Man 3 is seen as a followup to The Avengers as much as the Iron Man series since we all know he's the most interesting character of the bunch. Audiences are also used to getting the biggest Marvel movie of the year in May.

Anyone gone to see Now You See Me yet?

O.K. movie and a little funny at times until the ending the twist is good but the motivation for the whole thing I thought was extreme and over the top.
I think its fair to go after the corporation and banks but I don't get why Morgan Freeman's character was set up to take the fall, he is the least guilty out of all of them and not the reason why his fathers trick failed. Vault maker gets embarrassed for losing money for making cheap safes, rich dude lose money for being shitty insurance salesman, but Morgan freeman goes to jail for what looks like to be for the rest of his life because he makes money by exposing magicians?

Saw Into the Darkness, I liked every minute of it but I approached it as just another summer action movie. It helped a lot to just watch and ignore the inconsistencies.

Even arthouse movies like Simon Killer have dance scenes!

Saw the amazing spiderman..well the first half an hour or so. Wasn't a big fan of the Sam Raimi ones but jesus compared to the new one they're masterpieces. Stopped watching after that gym scene.

Didn't like Hangover 1, simply wasn't very funny to me but quite liked the second one. Maybe it was cause of basically having no expectations or viewing it as a road movie (and not a comedy) where crazy shit happens all the time.

Thanks for the Hangover II replies. I will probably end up watching it at some point. :(

You keep bringing this movie up :p can't wait to see it.

Expendable and me are the only ones pimping this movie, so sad. I think it's on VOD too, but have no idea how that stuff works.

Reposting from a few pages ago.

Do's:
- The Insider
- Heat
- The Last of the Mohicans (one of the best most suspensful, tight, thrilling and generally fan-fucking-tastic ending ever).
- Manhunter (don't look it up if you don't know what it's about, just go in dry, you'll make comparisons later...)
- Collateral

Don't oh no oh god why please have mercy seriously don't
- Miami Vice
- Ali
- Public enemies

Finally watched Badlands. Loved it. His use of nature, and the beauty of solitude is wonderful. The Thin Red Line was one of my favorite films I saw last year (LTTP I know) so I guess I should check out Tree of Life now.

Don't oh no oh god why please have mercy seriously don't
- Miami Vice

Man, I think I am gonna give it a shot at some point. Seems like some love it while others hate it.
