MS: Kinect launch "can" be bigger than PS3, 360, Wii

Microsoft has claimed that Kinect's launch can be bigger than that of every console in history - including Xbox 360 itself.

According to Microsoft studis boss Phil Spencer, the peripheral - which arrives in November - will represent "the biggest console launch ever".

Cripes.

"We are investing in this like we've never invested in a platform launch," he told Edge in a new interview. "This is, for us, the biggest platform launch in the history of the industry.

"We'll have a huge launch portfolio, we want to sell more units than any console has ever sold in its first holiday, a new platform. Our retail partners are telling us, based on the consumer demand, "this is going to be the number one consumer electronics purchase this holiday. Not just in the games space, all of them.

"In North America 7,000 retailers are doing midnight events when we ship and our pre-order momentum looks huge. So this, for us, is bigger than Xbox launch, bigger than 360 launch - this is a big deal for us. How many units are we going to sell? We're completely goaled in investing as if this were the biggest console launch ever, and that's our expectation."
When asked about Microsoft's preidction that Kinect can sell three million units in Q4, Spencer said:

"You forecast, you hope, you do your best, right? You ship something. I know my manager, Don Mattrick, was quoted saying a holiday target of over 3 million.

"I think about it in a bigger way than that. Not that Don's wrong; that's the number that he stated, but a lot has to happen in order for us to have success. Our content partners have to ship great games, our retail partners have to be there with us, our marketing has to be there in a very impactful way."

In a universe governed by probabilistic particle physics, many things are possible.
Meanwhile you dont seat on your couch everything is possible.

EDIT: Did they fix that 'Kinect doesnt work while sitting thing' ?

I can't wait this week's other outlandish statements. Between Kotick and MS, it has been a good week for them. I am not sure who's missing at this point. Maybe Sony could get Crazy Ken out of the closet and announce the psp2 for nine hundred and ninety nine dollars, I don't know.

As my Dad used to say when I asked him "can you lend me £10":

"Yes, I can. Whether I actually do it or not is another matter..."

I said Damn.

It was never a 'problem'. MS stated from the beginning that if games were designed for seating it would work. Fanboys ran with it like they run with everything negative when it comes to Kinect.

It'll be lucky to be bigger than the Virtual Boy.
Do people still believe this?

I mean, I'm not a Kinect fan -- I was definitely ridiculing it circa E3 -- but word is the preorders really are pretty strong. While I'm skeptical of its legs, I think it will do pretty well over the holidays.

I can see it easily doing 3 million, now whether it'll continue depends totally on the software and so far there are no dudebro games coming. If this fails the xbox division is going to be in a world of hurt.

Well it will certainly have a mammoth launch, I don't think anyone can doubt MS on that. Whether people will buy it is another question.

I think its going be a successful , not 'Wii' successful though.
Good luck MS.

Moreover, how can a trumped up clown shoe of a camera that even lacks its own processing chip be bigger than a fully specced console

I dunno, Kinect is pretty big. I mean, look at the size of the thing.

Packing in a kilo of crack and a Kim Kardashian in every box is a ballsy move.

Kinect will be lucky to match Move numbers.
Kinect will CRUSH Move. That's a fact. Now whether or not it reaches the heights MS is hoping for remains to be seen, but it'll definitely do much better than Move. Kevin Butler ads alone aren't going to make Joe Schmoe care about a peripheral that offers nothing new to the market.

The only good thing to come out of this is that it's forcing the current console lifespan to lengthen.

What's with crazy PR month?

Now if only designing the game to 'work' with Kinect wasn't a great deal more difficult then any other controller to date...

Is goaled even a word, used in this context? I hate PR people.
I didn't even see that and now I'm angry too. Maybe they're just aphasic lolbertarians attempting to say "we're investing in gold"?

edit: Fersis, I don't think NPD tracks accessories last I checked. Unless that's changed and I didn't realize it, accurate Move/Kinect numbers may have to get leaked or just come straight from MS and Sony.

You know, I think this will be huge.

I'm not placing any bets either way.

I thought downloadable content would be DOA. I thought for sure that nobody in their right mind would pay for things like horse armor, and other useless virtual trinkets, or extra maps because all of this stuff had been free previously.

These press statements are so annoying. We get it, we've heard it before Microsoft. You don't have to tell everyone every 2 weeks how big this is.

It comes off as desperate to me. "Oh if everyone sees how excited we are and we tell them how many people are planning on buying it then they won't want to be left out and go buy it too". The sad thing is, it's going to work.

So we can naturally expect people camping outside of Best Buy's etc. for their Kinect much like people did with the Wii that first season?

Craigslist will flood with Kinect's pushing double or triple the MSRP, desperate souls crying out "MY SON NEEDS A KINECT! HE IS DYING OF CANCER AND I WANT TO MAKE HIM HAPPY"?

People will frantically be calling, lining up at Apple...er... Microsoft (?) stores asking "do you have the new iKinect 4?!"

Crush it? what are you basing that on? How is that a fact?

Every month from here on out is going to be fraught with crazy. We have 3 huge releases in November, so I'm looking forward to that one in particular! :lol

I think it will well out sell move on the hype and marketing alone. But to talk about 3m units etc biggest launch this and that its pushing it alot when you have next to nothing to pull in your core market at launch.
