MS sales figures update: 66 million 360s, 18 million Kinects

8m+ for the October-December quarter (the 66m number is probably rouded off).
Really impressive achievement. It will be very interesting to see how much Sony shipped (for once they announced sell through numbers for December and Black Friday combined).
Still the fact that Microsoft didn't claim top spot worldwide could be a hint.

They did claim top worldwide for 2011 though

so, what are the numbers right now?
360 - 50 consumer, 66 retail
ps3 - 50 consumer / ?? retail
wii - 90 consumer / ?? retail

I honestly don't know the numbers, so i just used the numbers i remember hearing about. Checked ******** but that's...well you know.

360 hit 51 million at the end of 2010.

Yep. PS3 confirmed for 3rd place. It's not ever going to catch up. Time to give up on that dream.

Funny how this generation is going to end with the same relative marketshare ranking as it began. People were really, really expecting PS3 to defy trends and magically rocket above Wii and 360.

In the end, 1.Wii 2.360 3.PS3 will be the ranking of this generation, just like it was for the entirety of the generation once all 3 consoles were on the market for 2 years.

He said more than 66 million, it's not rounded off and could be anywhere up to 66.9 since I don't recall them ever using the nearly term before.

Good for MS, but it's telling that they didn't release sold to consumer numbers like Sony did this time. I'm sure NPDs will be huge for MS and Sony with MS much higher and sony taking up the slack in the rest of the world.

I doubt MS knew what Sony was planning regarding their numbers release today, they usually give shipped/sales to retail numbers too.

We'll get Sony's shipped numbers in their earnings report anyway, then we'll be able to compare properly.

It's a widely used marketing tactic. Marketing rounds upto the best possible figure. Investors aren't going to hold their feet to the fire over something like this.

No, it's really not. You don't say you've sold more than a number when you've sold less than it. If he had said, "we've sold 66 million" then rounding might make sense.

You got a single example of that happening in video game hardware announcements?

It is possible.

You think they sold more in the first half of the quarter than the second half? It's not possible.

Ask anyone you know who doesn't play games what they think of the Move. That response comes up surprisingly often, I wonder how much a role that played in Move's failure to catch on.

I respond to them the same way. Grow up. It blows my mind how much dick people see in everything, but I guess it speaks volumes about them.

It's really hard to believe how far Microsoft has come in the video game market.

I may not agree with all of their decisions (as a gamer) but obviously it is working for them financially (or at least starting to pay off). I guess the good thing about this is that Kinect may actually be good when the technology gets better, which may be with the next Xbox. I still think Kinect has potential beyond what it is right now.

The numbers are impressive but Microsoft has been known to flood the market during the holidays and the numbers are likely to be shipped to retailers. That's why that 10 million Kinect number was floating around for quite some time. I know sales drop after Christmas but there is also overstocking that goes on too.

40 million X $60 a year.

That's not how it works. They consider all active accounts, even silver.

No chance that happened with the numbers Sony gave us.
Sony will be over 7 million for this oct-dec quarter, they've already come out and said they're ahead of there target of shipping 15 million for the fiscal year which means when they've shipped 5.5 million so far this fiscal year they're going to be shipping at least another 9.5 million between october-march, & jan-march is usually only 2 million~.

The good thing is there will be actual interest to make games for it because now they have a large enough install base to sell to. It's so hard to know the true numbers for something like the Playstation Move since people can have multiple controllers. With Kinect there's 18 million customers who want Kinect games.

They said the same thing last year after Q3 which meant they expected 2.8 in Q4. They missed it by .7 million. I even remember people trying use that statement as proof of their sales.

The next Xbox will largely focus on multimedia features, a progression of Kinect, and yet another increase in price for Live. Gamers will gnash their teeth but it will largely because they supported and clamored for such things in the first place.

With a price cut next year i can see the 360 being the number one seller again next year (that plus halo 4 could be huge imo). Most people seem to be following the line that the PS3 is about to overtake the 360, i'm not so sure that's going to happen.

Also these kinect sales ensure that the next xbox is going to have a large focus on kinect. Not sure how i feel about that though.

Last post in this thread before I look obsessed*. Looking at last year's CES for the 360, Ballmer said more than 50 million and they ended up with 50.9 after earnings so I would say that means they sold anywhere from 8.4 million up to 9.3 million this quarter.

*Too late for that I know.

So this gen we will probably see the 2nd, 4th and 5th best selling consoles of all time. When you include handhelds the growth has been enormous.

It's going to be interesting to see how much of it can be sustained next gen.

Because MS told casuals it was cool. They're fickle and buy every "hot" new item that some company markets as the cool thing to have.

Shit dude, I think you've really nailed it. All those other companies who advertise their products as "not so hot" and "not cool to own" have really been going about things the wrong way. No wonder so many products fail.
