MS sales figures update: 66 million 360s, 18 million Kinects

hats off to MS. They made brilliant decision with Kinect and made 360 into a bigger success. All that marketing dollars are worth it!

Those are really impressive numbers. I applaud Microsoft, they have done what no one thought was possible, they have toppled the Empire of the Playstation.

There is no way the Playstation will be catching up anytime now. This generation belongs to Microsoft.

Wow. Just so many people trolling here.

Games sell hardware. People want Dance Central 1/2, and now, Just Dance 3. This is not hard to see why it's selling.

Cept almost none of the software is selling.

Proportionally speaking with respect to the rest of the Kinect library, few games turn a profit in the game industry for as many games as are released yearly.

I still think that the true potential with the idea of Kinect is one that will be realized in the second generation of its hardware and the broadening of it's strategy. When the device sees a refinement in its functionality and achieves ubiquity with it's interactive language then the sky's the limit for sales.

funny kinect sold so well since it's so freaking lame. that's a lot of people upset they wasted so much money for a gimmicky thing like that. endless dancing games means at least girls and glee boys are happy.

Kinect number isn't surprising since most new XBOX 360s sold came with it. Not like it sold itself.

So you can't buy the machine by itself anymore? I thought there were 4 SKUs.

I don't see how it's lame. Sure, if resources get diverted from core games too much and the 360 turns into a casual Kinect machine, that would be lame.

You can.

Yep.

Shit dude, I think you've really nailed it. All those other companies who advertise their products as "not so hot" and "not cool to own" have really been going about things the wrong way. No wonder so many products fail.

I laughed out loud at this.

Can't you buy 360s standalone and in bundles without Kinect? Why would so many people buy Kinect bundles if they don't want Kinect?

The price difference is minimal considering the 4GB is gimped with such low storage space. A good example would be here in Canada, where on Boxing week, the Kinect bundle sold quick while the 4GB piles were left practically untouched.

You still have to intentionally buy it. It's not like the Kinect-less Xbox 360s aren't right next to it on the shelf and $100 cheaper.
And practically storage-less. The fact that Kinect is bundled with a new machine for practically nothing (and a larger hard drive) adds more value to that item than saving $100 on the gimped version. And yes, the Kienct marketing helps push those units as well, but it's the bundle selling, not Kinect itself.

In the UK they still sell the 250 GB standalone and in non-Kinect bundles:

It's not minimal, it's a 100 dollar difference, you want a 4gb or 250 gig hdd 360 without kinect, it's 200/300, want it with, it's 300/400.

720 isn't coming out end of this year
Better chance of it coming out this year than next.

I am a firm believer that all three next gen consoles will be on store shelves by the end of 2013. Two on shelves by the end of this year. Nintendo and MS sitting under a 2012 christmas tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G!

every kinect sold is like a rusty knife slowly descending into my arm, infecting me with the casual virus i hate so much and wish would die...

nah im playing, being indifferent is a great thing. try it sometime gaf.

Was still a $70 difference. If people were hellbent on not getting the Kinect experience, they would have, and that could have gotten them another game for the same cost.

4GB - $129
4GB Kinect - $199 (source from NoStyle's GameDealsCanada twitter)

The Kinect is bundled with the exact same 4GB hard drive for $100 more. You aren't too good at this.

I don't care if it does bad or if it does good. If I would have picked up another XBOX360 console this Christmas, it would've been the Kinect bundle. Not because it has Kinect, but the possibility of being able to use it and its functionality in the future with software and whatever comes in the later dashboard revisions (and PC). There's so much more value in that bundle for an additional (and minimal) amount.

Should we put you on suicide watch? Just don't be too disappointed when that doesn't happen. People expecting Microsoft to focus on the next Xbox at E3 are in for a surprise as well.

They said the same thing last year after Q3 which meant they expected 2.8 in Q4. They missed it by .7 million. I even remember people trying use that statement as proof of their sales.
Except the difference this year is that all the actual sales numbers we get for NPD & Media Create for oct-dec show the ps3 up year on year & we already know that for the last 5 weeks of the year worldwide the ps3 has sold 3.9 million so unless European sales numbers for the ps3 in oct-nov were terrible the ps3 will be up by a fair bit this quarter compared to last year.

Where I come from a 50% price increase isn't a minimal amount but to each his own.

PS3 sold 3.8 Million worldwide for the same time frame Holiday 2009. It shipped 6.5 Million that quarter of 2009. Shipments should be around the same this time. 6.5 to 7.0 Million for the quarter.

Yea, put me on that watch also. If they don't announce the new consoles at E3, I'm going to be very disappointed. I can't wait much longer!

That's not how the relationship between sales and shipments necessarily works, but they should be around 7 million either way, give of take half a million. Compared to 2009, Oct-Nov NPD numbers are slightly higher (1030k in 2009, 1151k this year) and they managed to ship 6.5 million back then.

EDIT: Beaten.

You definitely won't get a full-blown reveal, but there might be something in the form of teases and tech demos. Watch Microsoft's E3 2004 conference for a good idea of what to expect, add a bit more because of Wii U launching this year.

They're already up in north america & japan by just under 400,000 this quarter without us knowing Decembers NPD results yet, & i would be significantly surprised if they weren't up again this month. Between December's NPD & all of Oct-Dec in Europe Sony only needs to be up by another 300,000 from last year to reach 7 million shipped.

The numbers Sony gave aren't just for December, they also include Black Friday week where we know Sony had their biggest sales ever in the US for BF, so those Oct-Nov sales aren't a good point of reference. Just looking at October sales has the PS3 being down from 2009.

I'd say 6.50 +or- .5 would be a decent guess and I wouldn't be shocked to see it hit the high end of that range.

If I'm wrong then I am just that... wrong.

I be reading the tea leaves though. They pointin' toward a storm a brewin'. Also I know stuff, and that stuff is going to make people mad.

I dont think we are disagreeing. I think they will ship around 7 Million for the quarter but they need 7.5+ to pass the 360 for the year.

Uuuuhhhh, you can buy 250GB 360's without Kinect.

Someone seems unhappy with 360/Kinect sales numbers! Hmph!

Well what i'm saying is i think they will ship over 7 million and 7.5 million isn't impossible either. We'll have to wait & see, there won't be much difference between the two for this calender year in terms of shipments. Although something that hasn't been mentioned is microsoft had to overship in Q1 of this year to make up for undershipping in Q4 of last year, there silly mistake from 2010 could end up 'winning' them 2011.

People have had fun with it and want their own?

It's really not a hard concept.

Different expectations of what makes a good game doesn't nullify their experience. Taken in context it's really simple to understand. Which is why personal bias is obviously at play with the majority of these comments.

Most of you aren't stupid. Prone to hyperbole and over-zealousness? Yes and very. But not stupid.
