MTV, the cable TV channel some critics have accused of straying too far from its musical roots, is to acquire Harmonix Music Systems, a maker of music-oriented video games, for $175 million in cash.

The goals of the deal, which is to be announced today, are broader than putting the MTV logo on a Harmonix game box: for instance, the company wants to offer visitors to its Web sites, its new virtual worlds and its planned mobile services the ability to play along with, or remix, their favorite songs.

wtf

Doesn't activision own their brands now? Would have been cheaper for MTV to just form their own studio..

OH NOES! Music channel to entirely fund experimental music game developer and allow them direct access to artists who they previously had to bend over backwards for ten seconds of their time!

ROCK ON HARMONIX.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know if it ever came to anything, but did anyone ever hear something about Harmonix creating a new IP for SONY? I assume it was for the PS3 but it was never made clear.

Think that rumour started floating around E3.

MTV in games. They'll make a big noise.... over nothing, and publish all their games through Midway seeing as they are corporate cousins.

The Wheelman will probably come with MTV branding now...... passssssssssssssssssss.

This could be a good thing... Better than Activision taking over RedOctane.

Furthermore, MTV is on good terms with Metallica. I want to play One in GH2!!

After the 100m Activision/Red Octane announcement, I was wondering what would happen to... you know... the actual developer of Guitar Hero. :lol

I smell bad things from this...

I think this could turn out really well for Guitar Hero. Being associated with MTV will gve them a whole lot more clout and they should be able to get songs much more easily.

I don't understand this...I thought Guitar hero and stuff was now Activision (with RedOctane)....now MTV buys Harmonix? What about Guiter Hero 2?

Oh, give me a ****ing break.

What about it? MTV isn't a publisher, why would this have any effect on Activision/RedOctane publishing Guitar Hero 2?

yeah, that question came to my mind too. red octan is ****ed up. and we all lose a good music game developer. i am only expecting shitty mtv style game in the future...

MTV = weaksauce.

I doubt we'll ever get those rumoured country/metal editions of GH now. Instead, we'll get the emo edition jackpacked with shitty music my 16 year old sister listens to. :(

People who are actually thinking that this is a good thing should think about that. What's more likely to happen?

1. Harmonix will likely get to continue working with companies like RedOctane and Konami to make games like Guitar Hero and Karaoke Revolution with the added benefit of being about to use more real songs in their games. Or...
2. MTV has Harmonix develop using real songs in MTV branded games with songs that MTV endorse instead simply the songs the guys at Harmonix would like to use.

If you think it's #1 all I have to say is BELIEVE!

I like how you added that bit at the end. Quick edit FTW. :lol

I guess this means MTV labels will be all over the controller bundles & game cases for GHII...

and inside the game. ****

I think I would've been happier if Sony or Microsoft was the new proud owner.

**** eMpTV.

No, what people should think about is that HMX haven't sold out, they've bought in. This is exactly the backing they need to do the music titles they want to do, with the people they want to collaborate with, and for the audience they want to get it to.

Seriously, if you understand the studio at all (and if you don't, http://www.edge-online.co.uk/archives/2005/11/rhythm_faction.php is a good place to start) you'd know this rather than giving yourself a black eye with your knee-jerk.

What makes you think they'll retain the freedom to do all that wonderful stuff they want to do?

Activision will destroy Guitar Hero as MTV destroys Harmonix. How depressing.....

Congrats to Harmonix on the big paycheck, though. You guys deserve the money.

MTV isn't a music publisher -- signing with them doesn't get them access to any new songs. I'm confused as to why people think it does.

MTV isn't interested in any of the music that has made their games great, anyhow.

Activision owns RED OCTANE.

Harmonix is still making Guitar Hero games for Activision/RO FOR NOW.

Special terms in the original GH agreement means that Harmonix is the ONLY dev in the business that can go make a GH clone without getting sued. They can make games using the GH mechanics ANYWHERE THEY WANT.

'Guitar God', anyone?

you're a trusting soul if you don't expect harmonix's next guitar game to become promotional material for whatever awful pap involving guitars mtv is trying to force on credulous teenagers at the time. at least in part.

so does this mean harmonix is gonna have access to any music video mtv has?

if so, this could be the big microtransaction earthquake.

MTV's use of music featured in videos on their channel isn't as open-ended as it used to be.

That's my thinking as well. On the plus side, this dramatically broadens the appeal of Guitar Hero and the clout they have to get even bigger songs and bands, but hopefully it doesn't come at the expense of their creative freedom. Don't get me wrong, Guitar Hero is a great game, but I've enjoyed Harmonix titles prior to Guitar Hero and I'm hoping they have the ability to do more than just pump out GH after GH.

Ideally though, this will work in Harmonix's favor and they'll have even more of a backing for future games that would've been shot down from the get-go -- Accordian Hero, maybe?

Wheee it was good while it lasted :-(

I guess we can all start taking bets now on whether the Guitar Hero series crashes and burns immediately, right after GH2 is released, or whether they hold off a little and slowly grind it into the dirt.

For those optimistic about this news: because small, plucky independent studios being acquired by grotesque media conglomerates has always worked out so well in the past, yes?

The Good: Harmonix has a whole lot more power.

The Bad: Guitar Hero: CREED expansion pack!

The Ugly: Ashley Simpson as an unlockable character?

So uh, did no one notice that the first Guitar Hero had an MTV Games logo at startup?

Oh no, someone that was already working with them is continuing to work with them! This will ruin everything!

There's a difference between working alongside a corporation and being owned by them. If I'm remembering right, I believe that also had do with MTV holding some sort of a patent on instrument-based peripherals from those iffy arcade machines they released in the late 90's, but I don't think I've ever seen that officially confirmed.

You. Are. Kidding.

MTV have done great things with their film label, so I don't think it's so unreasonable to give them the benefit of the doubt. Also, I think Harmonix could have sold to a bevy of potential publishers, but it seems that Harmonix felt it was the right move for them to partner with MTV.

If anything, highly interesting industry move.
