MTV VMA Performers announced -- It's tragic

Aside from Kanye crash and Miley & Beetlejuice combo I haven't been up on the VMAs since the early 2000's. Do they still have over the top performances like Puff Daddy rolling up on the back of a flatbed?

8/26 looks a lot like Danny Brown to me, but I don't thing he is "big" enough to be held back for a later reveal.

For all those saying "this is typical for the VMAs" -- here is last year's line up:

Ariana Grande
Nicki Minaj
Jessie J
Usher
Sam Smith
5 Seconds of Summer
Beyoncé
Maroon 5
Iggy Azalea

Out of these 9 performers, only one has never been nominated or won for a grammy. Only one of them lacks multiple top 10 hits, and only two of them lack would many would consider to be musical talent. Beyonce, Usher, and Ariana are arguably veteran music legends at this point in the game, and their names alone can carry a show. I'm sorry, but this year is very inconsistent with what we should expect from the VMAs.

I don't really get it. This year's line-up are a bunch of successful pop stars and musicians. Last year's line-up was a bunch of successful pop stars and musicians. It's one thing to argue you're not specifically into certain musicians, but overall the line-up seems very comparable.

Initially I thought you were arguing that this year's line-up wasn't diverse or interesting enough... that instead of focusing more on new, emerging artists they're focusing on the same pop stars that have typified the VMAs in years past. But your argument seems to be the contrary - that they're not "big" enough acts, regardless of their talent. I'm almost 30, don't listen to the radio, yet know of all the artists in both lineups with the exception of Tori Kelly - but even her name sounds familiar.

I can't help but think of

When you feature Igloo Australia on one of your songs, you automatically disqualify yourself from legend status. Girl should've known better.

Stahp. Queen Iggy BLESSED that song with her amazing verse. The song wouldn't have been as big as it was without Iggy.

I wanna know what universe you live in where Ariana is a veteran or a legend. Cuz you sure as hell don't live in the samd one as me.

21 Pilots was the worst concert I've ever seen. Would have left if it wasn't a festival and I was waiting for the band after them.

How so? I'd really like to know why you think they put on the worst concert you've ever seen. I saw them at Lolla and it was the best set of that entire weekend.

So please, tell me.

They were very gimmicky and their music is terrible. Didn't help that most of their crowd consisted of 12-13 year olds.

But hey they liked it, different strokes and all that.

I just want to say that I like how Demi Lovato in the outline pic looks like a person with a paper bag on her head.

I'm guessing the reason the lineup this year is weak is because most of the charts this summer have been new people...and most other singers/bands are on their last single. The Weeknd has a new album coming and after a an extrneley successful year, is arguably the top of the lineup. Macklemore is next with launch a new single from his album have two #1's and two top 20 songs.

Demi Lovato probably had a new song coming out, or is going to continue to promote "Cool for the Summer." I'm going with the former since the song doesn't really work heading into the Fall.

Phrarell must be launching a new more popular single after the Apple Music stunt failed to launch "Freedom." Though he could try to launch it again.

21 Pilots is an odd choice for MTV, but they are really the only recent "popular" band that can launch a new single/promote their current one. ASAP Rocky is an even weirder choice to go with them, considering he is not popular at all. Could work though.

Tori Kelly is a mystery since I have not heard her music at all.

Justin Bieber is a good choice, he's making his comeback from his Roast and he was popular with the Top 20 song with Diplo and Skrillex.

Nicki Minaji would be an odd choice...her recent single while somewhat popular didn't like up the charts. She might have another one though it won't be as popular.

They should have replaced Pharell with Fetty Wap, someone who has been ridiculously popular this year who has had multiple songs and has a new album coming out. Replaced Tori Kelly with Lana Del Ray. And probably replace Nicki with Taylor Swift. They could even have the Taylor Swift/Kanye West song that is supposed to be happening.

Botty. You are a mess.

Ariana is hit-less trash who crutches on her features.....

I'm more offended with the visual style of the ads than the artist selection. Looks like something you'd see done on ME paint posted on a geocities website. Fucking embarassingly bad.

royalan, brother man, why do they keep trying to put Tori Kelly on?

They have a pre-show performer (Tori Kelly) listed as a main performer who doesn't even have a gold album nor significant single. Boggled, my mind is.
Pls royalan explain this shit to me too. Because she has been on the come up at almost every commercial event I've seen/heard
which was the BET awards and iheartradio fest or whatever it's called

I'm confused, is it's known what 21p/A$AP are performing together? Seems so random. Some kind of remix coming to radio?

I don't know, nothing really explains Tori Kelly. She doesn't have the talent, the hits, or the fanbase to explain the high profile promotion she continues to get.

She probably caught the attention of somebody high up on the music industry totem pole who thinks she's the best thing to happen to music since Whitney.
