Music wars - Should I cancel Spotify and go for Google Play All Access?

Oh, I've used it. I don't really see how it's so much better than Spotify's...but I have no prob with Spotify.

For me it's just that Spotify's web app seems to be a resource hog, for seemingly no reason. Doesn't seem like it should be as taxing on my PC as it is.

I loved using all access with the free 3 months i got from my chromecast. The playlists it created for me were perfect and allowed me to discover tons of new songs that fit my tastes. It's a shame those playlists disappear completely once your subscription ends though.

If they had a student discount like spotify does, I would switch back in a heartbeat

Thanks OP. I was looking for a new music service since last week my work decided to block Spotify. If only I could import my playlist.

Is it blocked completely or is the web player just having trouble getting through the firewall? If so, try this link.... https://play.spotify.com/?http=1

I cancelled spotify for nearly a year because the web player wouldn't work, then found out it was simply looking for a secure link. Now I listen all day at work.

I have been using Google Play music since the beta and have really enjoyed it. Also, still paying the $7.99 a month rate that I got locked into when using the beta is a great deal. Playback is good and I love that I can upload my own music that isn't on the service. I have the app on my phone and my girlfriends phone and we both use it a lot. Being able to download songs for offline use on the phone and on my PC is great, I was able to download some albums to create my GTA5 playlist, was really sweet to be able to do that.

I used Spotify premium for a year or two and switch to Google Play when it first came back. I love it and haven't looked back. The way it incorporates my library is a must since I have a lot of lesser known music that none of the major services have.

Spotify:
+ Huge catalogue
+ Great Playlist selections, and they're constanly updated
+ Nice, clean interface
+ 320 kpbs streaming
+ Dedicated Desktop app
+ Leader of the market, so better community support and community features
+ Easier to find new artists
- Desktop app can be kinda buggy and slow
- No way to sync your own music, unless they're on Spotify's catalogue. (lots of omissions)
- No FLAC compatibility

Play Music

+ Upload ANY music, even if not on their catalogue, and listen it anywhere.
+ FLAC uploading support (even though they are converted to 320 kpbs mp3 files)
+ If you REALLY LOVE Taylor Swift (:P)
- Horrible, slow and buggy PC (webapp) and mobile apps
- Since its marketshare is small, it is often forgotten by artists (they still appear on the service, but takes a little longer)
- Bad playlist selections
- Harder to discover new artists.

That said, I chose Play Music only because of the uploading feature, as it is really important for me (I listen to lots of gaming/youtube/cover/brazilian content, there's no way to listen to them via Spotify). As soon as Spotify offer this feature I'll be moving over.

I guess but Spotify library is what makes me keep them. I tried Google Play Music and maybe for someone like me who is always craving for new music, I unsubscribed after that free month. The music was fine and sometimes feeling lucky really put some good jams together, but I feel like it barely gets the newest freshest content like Spotify does. Within 2 days, a song that gets premiered on the Internet hits Spotify. I would give Google a big push if it was like that for them but it isn't.

Lots of indies I listen to that also have Bandcamps and SoundClouds have nothing on Google Play either.

So if you are into mainstream and a little lesser known but known enough that it would be typically something they have sold (ie Tinashe) then it works. But if you are on the radical side of indies (ie. Kaytranda) then you won't find it.

Not saying you are wrong in general, but I just looked up Kaytranada and see the same content on Google Play and Spotify (with a faulty tag on Google).

You could get the $8 a month subscription. And the playlists return when you resub.

I made the switch a couple of years ago primarily because I listen to music almost entirely on my phone. Google Play's app is infinitely better than the trash that Spotify has.

I was going to say that All Access has only been out for a year but then I remember. Jesus, it's been a long time!

They're all basically the same. I've been using Spotify for so long, I can't picture going just packing up everything and going (though I did do that for a few months with Google Play and will be doing that with Apple Music with those free three months) and in my experiences GP and Spotify do basically the same thing and I can find all the music I like (alt/indie) just fine. Although if Spotify did get Chromecast support, that'd be lovely.

You get ad-free and background listening of YouTube music as well with your Google Music AA sub.

I prefer it over Spotify.

I use both. The library is basically the same as Spotify. The edge it has over Spotify is that if there's a song they don't have, you can upload like 20,000 of your own songs and it will all seamlessly integrate with their streaming songs into one big catalogue.

Only thing that makes Spotify better are the playlists/radio.

The music locker is the biggest reason I chose Google over the rest. It was worth meticulously tagging and finding album art for all 13,000+ songs in my collection. Feels good man.

I have Google Play since it was announced and I'm paying the special sub of $79 mexican pesos which are 5 dollars today.

I'm having a similar dilemma than you.

But the other service I'm trying right now is Rdio. The interface and service is miles better than Spotify's.

I haven't tried the mobile app but that also should beat Spotify pretty easily since that's a mess. Spotify is just too frustrating and the fact that is 3 euros cheaper is nice and all but I don't know if it makes up for how bad it is.

The biggest question for me is library. Like how long will things take to hit Rdio compared to Spotify? That will break or make the service for me.
