Cowboy Beboop
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
Rurouni Kenshin OVA

and .. that is it
There are some cool movies like Summer Wars and that Sword of the Stranger but ....

A lot of what I was gonna suggest seems to be said already. So I will just add other stuff I didn't really see skimming through the posts:

Higurashi (dark mysterious horror)
Seto no Hanayome (comedy)
Bakemonogatari (unique story with amazing art)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (mecha anime)
D.Gray-man (fantasy shounen supernatural)
Shiki ( horror vampire like)

Yes. It has a few problems but the pace is a lot better. It get's rid of the shitty fillers in the original. The script and voice acting is also much better in the English dub.

It doesn't even have the original soundtrack. The music made DBZ for me.

If you want to watch Dragon Ball then I recommend watching Dragon Ball Kai. Its Toriyama's original vision finally brought to life. The original series still has its charm but its also nearly 25 years old and has plenty of filler.

My personal favourite anime is probably Bleach...but I won't recommend that you.

Am I right in assuming that everyone recommending Hunter x Hunter here is recommending the new one?

I loved the original, but haven't watched the new stuff. How does it stack up?

Yeah the new 2011 one! Cuts out the usual unbearable slow filler anime pacing :D

well out of the 3 shows I consider god tier you already watched bebop and trigun..so all that's left is highschool of the dead..

nah just kidding NGE obviously. though I love HOTD. mindless fun at it's best(some might consider it a bit creepy..tons of fan service).

besides that I'd say you should watch monster which is veeeeeery long and slow but absolutely amazing.

about one piece and dbz...both are fun but there's soooooo much filler it isn't even funny. especially in dbz. I'd rather read the mangas.

52. Trigun 9 41

what

Ghost in the Shell SAC is one of the few animes I've ever liked.

Along with Cowboy Bebop, and the Escaflowne series

Also
fuck Dragonball in all its forms.

There's also the Avatar: The Last Airbender show, though its american. Not sure if that qualifies. Still though, it's a critical darling for a reason. Season 2 is where it kicks into fucking high gear, but it's a fun watch throughout. After that, there's also Legend of Korra, the sequel series.

I'd say Paranoia Agent, but it is creepy. Tokyo Godfathers, on the other hand, isn't, but it's a movie rather than an anime series.

Durarara!! (from the same studio that made the Baccano anime, I think) is quirky, but quite good IMO.

Evangelion's crazy good. To me it felt like a show where the whole setting was second to the characters, which were deeply tied to the central theme and really well written.

I'll also agree that the original Dragon Ball's better than Z, since it was more about a mix of combat and exploration, rather than all combat, all the time like most of Z and GT.

First half is neat, and good.

Second half is awful, creepy, and just all around bad.

what? no. It might no be as interesting as the first season...but it doesn't suddenly turn into an awful creepy show that is all around bad. why does everything on gaf the internet has to be either awesome or terrible. whatever happened to not that good or mediocre?

My top 2:

Steins;Gate
Darker than Black

Actually surprised there isn't more Steins;Gate posts in this topic.

I recommend Evangelion, but be prepared to dive into some post-episode research.

I also hear Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Hellsing are good.

I mean, there's probably a hundred titles you should watch, many of which have already been suggested in the thread. I'd personally watch some movies as they're easier to digest then shows. So:

Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell Innocence (assuming you like the original)
Nearly every movie by Mayo Hiyazaki/Isao Takahata e.g. the works of Studio Ghibli
Sword of the Stranger
Wolf Children

That's a pretty good starting point. I good go and on and on, as some people in this thread have already done. The problem with opening your thread with such a broad query is that you're going to get hundreds upon hundreds of different responses which might be useful in aggregate, I suppose.

The second half is easily one of the worst sequences of anime I have watched.

Not everything is bad or good to me, nor is that the case for all the other people who happen to use the internet. Why do a select few knuckle heads like you have to think it's the internet vs them in terms of opinions?

Why not tell us why the second half was good instead of complaining about an individuals opinion and some sort of esoteric issue with the "internet's" opinions.

btw it's still creepy, because she is held as a domestic slave and nearly raped

Trying to get into some anime and I'm looking for the absolute best.

I've already watched/am watching Naruto, Trigun, FMA, Death Note, Samurai Champloo, Gurren Lagaan, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop.

Those are the kind of animes I like but I'm open to anything that isn't creepy.

And are One Piece and DBZ worth starting?

Thanks!

That is shounen what you like. (Teener targeted action shows). Try Samurai 7 (a bit like 7 Samurai indeed, but different, and, in anime), Rurouni Kenshin, Gintama. If you want to watch a great action movie not tied to a series watch Spriggan. It's great.
Here's a list of top anime shows of a great anime site, you can keep track of everything you've watched: http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php

spriggan_dvd_cover.jpg

EDIT: you got recommended "Sword of The Stranger" by Jexhius and he is right, superb action scenes! Studio Ghibli is great but it's not action orientated. however it's so good you might want to check them out anyways (everything on his list is good btw.).

I don't get the love for Evangelion. I only watched the movies but the latest one was just ridiculous. I actually enjoyed the first 2 but after the third one, I'm just not liking the direction its going and feel no reason to bother watching the tv series.
