My .edu email address is getting deleted - how do I transfer it to another account?

Hey GAF, so my grad school is apparently deleting my .edu email address, which I have been using pretty much as my main account for the last 5 years. So I have two main inquiries:

1) Is there a way to transfer my account to another gmail account?

2) And is there a way to have it forward the emails going to the .edu account henceforth to another email address (and after it gets deleted)?

I really don't want to have to deal with going and changing the email address and login info for the countless things I'm subscribed to and whatnot...

Can you ask if they'll keep the address for you? I did that years ago when they were going to remove my account (and enable an optional alumni one) and they made an exception. I think they just bulk delete a lot of that stuff as people stop using it, accounts get hacked and used for spam, etc.

I graduated in 2005 and was able to enjoy all the .edu discounts my email address provided. In 2010 they deleted my email address.

Now I'm sad.

As long as you have another email address that GAF will allow then you can just change it yourself in account management, just put in your new email address twice & then your password & it will change it, you get a email sent to that email address to verify it via clicking on a link.

I had to do this in december as I had to switch my email from one to another, worked no problems, you don't have to get an admin here to do it.

To be honest, my main concern is my actual email address, but you guys bring up a good point, since I do use my .edu account for Neogaf as well...

You could enroll in more classes

Good old .edu account. Great for discounts.

I miss amazon prime student

You should definitely be able to have your edu account forward emails to a new one. I never used my edu and always had them forwarded to me. Check the settings, of course this'll only last as long as your edu address does.

The easiest it an ISP email address, who do you get your internet from?

The person who is in charge of your internet account can set up one for you, even if you are not living at home but your parents have an ISP they can set up an ISP email for you to use.

That just reminded me that my gaf account is tied to a .edu account from my old school that I don't use anymore. Wonder if I can even get into it anymore.

Is it on an exchange server or something like google apps?

There is a way to migrate existing email and set up a forward, however I doubt they would set up a forward, they might transfer your existing email to another one if you give them the e-mail address.

Best advice is never use school e-mail for stuff not related to school. I work for a high school and once they graduate I wait until the fall and then delete them so that they have some time if they were using it for correspondence with a college or something.

Yeah. I had to switch from the original address I used that was being switched to another address. Since I never really used the original email for anything else, it was easy enough to just change it on my own.

if it is POP3 I think you can just log in and download everything and transfer to another account with POP3 support (like gmail)

Forwarding will be at the discretion of your school though. Best to change as many as possible to your new email just in case (website registrations etc).

As others said I would have migrated long ago.

Reach out to the school and see if they have alumni accounts. Our school moved us from @school.edu to @alumni.school.edu. And the alumni email is valid forever with a forwarder option.

Otherwise, start forwarding manually now to gmail. Or if you can set up IMAP locally, download it all to a PC, then try to upload to gmail. That used to work a long time ago.

My suggestion would be to begin migrating to a new provider ASAP. By all means ask them for a forward but don't rely on this long term as whether or not the forward continues to work is entirely out of your control.

When picking a new one avoid e-mail providers that could be considered transient such as ISPs, employers, education etc. You would just be leaving yourself open to having to deal with the exact same issues your facing now at some point in the future.

Basically I would pick from either Gmail or Outlook.com, both well established and respected providers and both have scope (at cost) to support your own domain should you ever want to go down that route in future.
