My PS4 won't stay in standby.

It seems pretty weird. In the harddrive thread people were reporting very different times as well and for some it worked instantaneous and for some not at all. I think the word was that the PS4 behaves differently when you send it into standby while it is still downloading stuff. Maybe the PS4 is actually in some form of suspend mode and goes into standby after downloads are finished? I dunno.

This needs further testing for sure.

Ahh this is true. Now that I think about it, last week when I suspended the PS4 with games being downloaded, it resumed instantly. When I waited long enough for the downloads to be completed, it did the resume that I'm more accustomed to seeing now where it quickly shows a health message.

So I take it my, and other people's, PS4's are working as designed.

Yep, same here. Mine shows the logo, the health warning then logs in. As if its ocld booting even when in standby.

Wait WHAT?! It's not supposed to be like that? What if you have multiple profiles on the console Surely the console isnt supposed to boot that fast.

Standby shouldn't show the health warning nor the PS logo. Cold boot does.

EDIT: Here is how a standby boot is supposed to look like: http://youtu.be/KZTLNl5OuKI?t=27s

I know my console is in standby because it uses 8-15W versus 0 when off, and it boots exactly like it does from off. doesn't take any more or less time and shows the same screens. I don't know what is going on in that video; maybe his tv is just really slow at handshaking

Read above. There is a standby boot that is long, when the PS4 seems to go into deep sleep. Then there is another short standby boot when the PS4 is already "awake" and working on something else such as downloading a patch.

Ah, alright, thanks.

Well, my PS4 has been in standby for the past 5 hours. All I did was plug it into the wall instead of the surge protector.

I'll give an update if this actually resolved the problem or not once I've given it a few days or more of use and going in and out of standby.

Around 4 days later, plugging the system into the wall directly definitely didn't help. I just put my system in standby so it would charge my controller. Within minutes, it had shut off and the controller is no longer charging.

I guess I have to this initialization process, but I really don't want to. They say it'll wipe out all data and settings.

It's crazy all the weird bugs that are popping up. Nothing major, and they'll probably all be gone in the next couple of updates, but there's just so many different edge cases...

Anyways, it sucks about the whole losing data thing, but it sounds as if you have PS+ no? If all your saves are in the cloud you really wouldn't lose anything (although depending on your net connection, downloading any games again would be a pain)

Well, I tried initializing it. That did not work. My PS4 stayed in standby all night last night, but today I put it in standby after playing a few minutes of BF4. Within 20 minutes, it had shut itself off completely.

I guess I just have to hope it's an issue they can fix with firmware updates.

How fast does it come out of standby? Does everyone else see the health warning every time? Can that be disabled?

I agree that the health warning is nonsense when coming out of standby mode. I don't need a 5-second epilepsy warning everytime I boot my console.

I hate to say it, but I think you have a busted system.

:-/ Mine doesn't do any of these things. You might want to look into getting a replacement. (This assumes you updated, did safe mode, and re installed everything on 1.51)

Go to: settings , power supply settings, set functions available in standby, enable turning on of ps4 from network

What do you have that set to? It's possible you have another device on your local network that could be sending a "wake on LAN" type of signal that is causing your PS4 to power on. Check the above setting and switch it to OFF to be safe and see what happens.

Yeah I did the safe mode reinitialize trick and had to re-install everything afterward. I really don't want to go through the headache of exchanging my system just because it randomly leaves standby. It does everything else perfectly fine.

I'll probably just live with it and hope that they "fix a problem affecting a small number of users" in the future.

It was all set to the default settings, which is having everything enabled. I could try turning that stuff off and see if it stays in standby then. It's just strange because nothing is turning my PS4 on, as the problem is that the PS4 is turning itself off. But I will likely try this anyway.

@Grinchy - My PS4 has done the same thing about 3 times. Everything else seems to be perfectly normal, so I'm not sweating it yet. FWIW it seems to have done this 2x when I was putting it in standby while charging and 1x when not. Not sure if related at all.

Call sony customer support and see if they can resolve the issue. If the ps4 is powering off, maybe it could be that electrical outlet causing issues. I'd try setting the ps4 up in another room just to test everything.

Have you thought about using a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) which uses a battery backup? If you did have any random power outages in your house, this would definitely narrow down if the problem is with your console or your power outlet. You can pick one up for around 60 bucks or so.

It's funny you mention that. Just now I put my PS4 in standby so it would charge my controller. The orange light didn't stay on for more than 40 seconds before shutting off.

One of the reasons I don't think it's an electrical issue is that nothing else that's plugged into the same outlet loses power at any point. I have a surge protector plugged into one outlet and the PS4 plugged into the other one on its own. My sound system, TV, and PS3 are all connected to the surge protector, and none of those things turn off. The PS4 used to be plugged into the surge protector until I decided to find out if that was causing the issue.

Just now, i turned my PS4 off through the controller. 5 minutes later i notice that its is still on, or atleast had a pulsing while light. I just assumed it was in standby mode. But nothing would wake it up, the power button and controller done nothing.
I eventually held the power button for 7 seconds and it switched off..... idk what happened, but when i turned it on again it done some file check, and warned about not turning the power off while its on... Only got it yesterday, so ill keep an eye on any more odd behavior.
