My Xbox One - Area One impressions

Lol come on son. It's quite clear you have a certain preference for the Xbox. I do not care about console wars or any of that shit, but as soon as someone says I'm a X fan, they somehow think they're excluded from having a preference, or mild bias.

Still, I enjoyed your impressions, and I'm collecting all of people's impressions to make my decision on whether to buy the Xbox One or not after launch. Feedback of the controller, however, seems to be more on the negative side as of now, with yours being one of the few exceptions. More data is needed.

Thanks for the impressions OP. I'm glad to hear DR3 is as fun as it looks in vids. I can't believe I may pick up this expensive box for this game.

Copy and paste from another thread.

Don't know if anyone gives a shit, but my Futureshop started setting up their Xbox One playable stand.

They only had Forza and its literally 1 lap and the demo ends.

The controller is........worse. I didn't test the d-pad, so I can't comment on that. But when you rest your fingers on the controller, the middle section of your index fingers rest on the bumpers. It does feel like their is a slight curve inward of the controller that is causing that. I could alleviate it by bringing my hand lower so that only really the tips of my finger are touching the triggers, but then my thumb is right on the edge of the left stick.

The rumble is cool, but I would disable it for racing probably. It was going the whole time essentially, and kind of got annoying after just 1 lap. I think it would work better for an FPS.

There was some hitching with the demo. The guy said it was because it was a dev console.

Overall though, it was decent. I personally don't think that if you loved the 360 pad, you will automatically love the Xbone pad. For me, the 360 pad feels better. There are improvements to the dpad, etc. But purely in terms of feel, the 360 pad is better. This was only with a few minutes hands on time mind you.

I am more of a Playstation fan and I have not tried the DS4 yet. So I guess you can take that into consideration when looking at my impressions. Right now, if I had to choose a controller, I would still take the 360 based purely on feel.

These sound like some really good games OP; this is why I tend to focus on the games and not so much the consoles (tho I'll admit, I can get drawn into flaming wars if only to attempt culling some of the bullshit and adding some logic to things), and while I've been a bit harsh on XBO on these forums, it hasn't been b/c of the launch window line-up.

In fact, especially given DriveClub's delay, I can finally say that, right now, in an unbiased opinion, XBO has the more substantial launch lineup. That doesn't mean PS4's is unsubstantial (tho DriveClub and WD delays do hurt), just XBO's one is of a magnitude more than PS4's. For PS4 the games I would genuinely consider would be Knack (liking it more than most people here), Resogun, Transistor, and possibly Killzone. OTOH, XBO has Forza, KI (still think it's a subpar fighter but it is a fighter), CD, DR3, LC, and Max. That's 4 vs 6, basically.

Other people will feel differently and I respect that, and I still think PS4 offers the better long-term value proposition. But the launch lineup, even if narrowly, goes to XBO for me. And, I think if many PS fanboys/fangirls were being a little more open-minded, they could say the same.

And there's nothing wrong in saying that. I play games for the games, the hardware is just a means to an end.

That's the first thing I would try, considering the issues with the 360 dpad.

There really was nothing for me to play with that used the dpad. It felt better and looked better, but no idea if it controls better. I assume that it is a vast improvement based on other peoples impressions.

Dead Rising 3
My most wanted launch game. I played that alone for an hour for sure - over and over again. The demo was time limited so you had to restart and the area was blocked off.
I am actually impressed by the graphics here, not the resolution as it's clearly not as sharp as some other games, but the texture work and lighting, paired with the amount of zombies on screen and stuff you can do, damn!
Zombies have many details and you can slice them in gruesome ways, which can lead to nasty things, I love it.
Not surprised, another poster said that he thought it was running at 720p. That would explain why they were able to hit a stable 30fps.

Surely you can spot a troll?

And once again, please put your impressions in the proper impressions thread as well.

But there is no specific thread labled as impressions, so I asked, and mod said new threads are endorsed, so ... there you go, all my fault I guess.

Sigh...

Afaik it's a dynamic resolution.
Link?

Edit:
I'm going off this post and the OPs impressions.

I'm pretty sure it's 720p for gameplay, at least it looked it when I played the demo. A metric fucking ton of zombies on screen though and no real framerate dips. And ya 30.

Same with KI, that's 720p but it's got effects out the YINYANG and it looks fucking ridiculous. That's 60 though.

Controller impressions lined up with mine when I played Forza yesterday. I found that the rumble wasn't distracting. I didn't expect Laguna Seca to impress me and it didn't, but the cockpits were beautiful. Looking forward to playing the final versions of these games.

Controller:
Feels great in the hand, alls fears washed away! It's a bit smaller so I feared for my large hands, but no problem at all since the bottom is now much better.

Can you elaborate on this part?

The grips feel uncomfortably wide, the back is flat. I found it really uncomfortable to hold, the tiny sticks are bothersome, so are the horrible new bumpers. All in all a clear downgrade from the 360 controller.

Ah yeah sorry. The battery bulk is now gone, no more cramped fingers since there is more space for them.

Sigh...

When m0dus closed the last thread, he said that it should have gone here.

It's just nice to have the Sony and MS impressions in one place so you only have to follow one or two threads. If a mod told you to create this thread, cool, but it would be nice for the folks following the other thread if you put your impressions there as well. Thanks for taking the time to post your impressions, btw.

Couldn't disagree more with any of this. Grips are perfect, the lack of battery pack is a blessing, and the sticks are looser but provide more precision. Bumpers are different, but not horrible unless you're a fingtertip-bumper presser. It's not a massive upgrade over the 360, but it is an excellent refinement of what was already the best controller.

D-pads should by default be 8-driectional.

The new 360 controllers featuring the twist d-pad had this, why create a next-gen controller with a stiff 4-directional d-pad.....again?

I enjoyed this impression, Feef. Especially about Crimson Dragon. I have heard little information about this game and any opinion on it, good or bad, is a plus.

What launch games are you looking to pick up one your Xbox One?

Edit: Didn't mean to quote that.

Dead Rising 3

Zombies have many details and you can slice them in gruesome ways, which can lead to nasty things, I love it.

Combining weapons and vehicles is fun as hell - just press RB and see what you can do. My favourite weapon might have been the gloves for sure, was fun doing the spinning attack.
Combat feels much more meaty than in the previous Dead Rising games, there is a nice oomph to the attacks. The throw attack is awesome as always - special attacks are fun as hell.
And oh, now I know where those gunshots came from in some videos - zombie cops are holding shotguns and firearms, which can lead to funny moments as the might hit their buddies when they try to shoot.

One thing that I did not hear mentioned anywhere was the sound and music. Nick responds to stuff happening in front of him, which is a neat touch.
If you approach a horde he is going to say stuff like "oh boy, this is going to be bad" (paraphrasing...) and so on. When you put on the knight armor, you can hear the metal clanging when you move,
just like in Dark Souls or Monster Hunter, it's good stuff. The music is good as well, dynamically changes when you are in danger and so on.

I could write much more about that game - I want it now!

That sounds AMAZING.

I don't know how I'm going to resist the temptation to buy an X1 when reviews, impressions and gameplay vids start popping up. Same with the PS4 and Knack. It's just too much.

Good read. A bit worried about Forza's AA, but I hope it's fixed in the later builds.

One thing I miss though is a in-depth impression of Zoo Tycoon, I feel like this is one of the games that just jumps off everyones radar, but might actually end up being quite decent.

The sticks are a bit looser, but that's great since the "sticky" feel of the 360 sticks worried me sometimes, they are def. not as loose as the DS3 ones though.
I was kinda surprised when looking at them from the side. They are titled a bit upwards, like 2 degrees or something. First I thought it's a manufactoring fault but it actually helps with the thumbs clicking the sticks in - neat touch.

Triggers are looser as well, and I was surprised that they felt a bit smaller than the 360 ones actually, on images they look huge. But oh my the rumble in there is fantastic! It's a very fine rumble and it's not getting in your way at all.
The only games that used them were FOrza 5 and Crimson Dragon. There were a few setups that had triggers seemingly in bad shape, not sure what is up with that, other ones felt tight and good. I guess it's still unfinished hardware, or at least I hope.

Bumpers have more click to them, need a bit more pressure than the 360 ones, I liked them, nothing to complain or note.
Buttons are the buttons, as good as always.

D-Pad is as already known a huge improvement, but it felt a bit small - I have huge thumbs though ;) It has a good click to it, love it!

This is disappointing though. The sticks and triggers are already plenty loose on the 360 controller, why on earth would they make them even looser. What the hell is the thought process behind making them looser.

It's one of the main reasons I hate the DS3. The damn sticks and triggers are too damn loose.

Excited for next gen. Getting a PS4 at launch, but I really wish I could afford an Xbox One as well. I'm a big Dead Rising fan, but back when I was preordering, XB1 was still quite the anti-consumer console. Now it looks pretty good. I'll probably pick one up early next year.

There's still the whole 100$ more expensive, weaker hardware, NSA spy box thing going on for it too. A sane person might consider it a decent product, had it only existed in a bubble with no other choices.

I just don't understand

Both builds being demoed are really old. Just pointing that out.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a textbook example of how to properly derail a thread. smh
