Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 11 |OT| It Stinks!

I'm only two episodes in, but the way the cast doesn't interact each with other during the movie has been bothering me, so that'd explain why. It's especially noticeable when Servo flies or Gypsy drops into the theater; the others never react to any of that even happening.

Sure, they acknowledge Gypsy and Tom flying. Please watch more than 14% of the season before making these types of statements.

They apparently did not. For scheduling and/or "wanting to get the best take" reasons, actors and jokes were recorded separately and edited together. I think it was the reboot's only misstep and it's a big one. I hope that if there's a season 12 they relax that and go back to actually all watching the movie together.

Now that you've pointed it out, it's pretty obvious, and it's distracting as hell. I've only watched the first episode so far, was largely underwhelmed, I'll probably plow through the rest over time, but I hope they correct this if they do another season.

The jokes are too crammed in on top of each other. The timing is off on many jokes. The chemistry seems to be missing for the most part (which is something that could just take time to form for these guys, but it's noticeable).

I'm not saying it's bad. I liked it well enough. Not a great season, but good. A solid C+ to a B-.

If they get a season 12 though, my number one wish would be to take a breath or two between jokes. It's hard to laugh when you're worried you're going to miss something, and it's hard to get into the movie even a little (which I think is essential to enjoying riffing) when you can barely hear it over the riffs.

I'm going to go on the record and say that, for me, the higher joke density improves the show. It helps with rewatchability and I am betting this style will draw in more newcomers. I think across the entire arc of the series, the joke density has increased as people become more accustomed to (and demanding of) information density in general.

The new show feels like it runs at the pace of a Twitter feed and that feels about right.

I know a lot of people are put off by the speed of the riffs but...I like it. If they weren't any good then maybe there'd be a problem but the riffing is so good here that I appreciate them coming at a rapid-fire pace.

I like it too, but I wish the timing was a little later. If the riffs were all slid a half second later I think it would play better. It never quite feels like they're reacting to the movie, and it's made more noticeable (and all the more frustrating it wasn't fixed) by my knowledge that the riffs are assembled in an editing room.

I like the rate of jokes a lot, though. I think people may be misidentifying the problem and it's in the editing and the timing established in post production, more than the raw number.

Being a pessimist and a big MST3K fan(been watching since season 3), I tempered my expectations for this. After watching the first two episodes I can firmly say that I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far. I'm glad this turned out well. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the season.

I hope season 11 does well for them and warrants a 12th season.

Just finished "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" (episode 5) and it's the best one since "Cry Wilderness."

I'm starting to think that nothing in this season will be able to top Cry Wilderness, but that's okay.

Same.

I actually like the change.

Watched Avalanche this morning. My favorite one so far. All the movies have been good picks full of bizarre and nonsensical shit.

Beast of Hollow Mountain was a ridiculously entertaining episode. (I was wondering when we'd get a
"Watch out for snakes!"
callback.)

Avalanche was so terrible... that shit just went on and on and on

Yep. You know a disaster-themed movie is bad when you start actively rooting for the avalanche to happen. (I was doing so long before Jonah and the bots did.) Doesn't help that nearly everyone in the movie except for the token Only Guy Who Saw It Coming is a first-class idiot. Still a great episode all around, but damn.

In the old shows, I don't remember much continuity between episodes other than the occasional joke (they just didn't care). Maybe it was there and I just never noticed? This new season seems to have tighter continuity which rewards watching the episodes in order. In Avalanche they make a couple references to the fact that one of the actors was in the previous episode (Time Travelers). If you watch out of order, those comments could throw you.
There is 100% joke continuity in the original MST3K. The second episode I ever saw was Pod People, and they talk about hating Timmy, which was a reference to Gamera, the episode right before. Except there was no way for me to have seen Gamera at the time, as it wasn't out on VHS and wouldn't be easily viewable until years later.

I finished episode 2 and it's okay. The two things that bug the hell out of me is the green screen backgrounds and Tom and Crows voices not being very distinct. The latter is very frustrating for me.

Crow has somewhat functional arms now which is weird. Tom doesn't need help hovering over the air grate that leads into the theater. Its so dumb but I miss Joel/Mike having to pickup Tom and walk out with him. I don't like things that are different. Gypsy can enter scenes more easily with her new rewiring which is cool, but like with the other bots voices she doesn't sound very memorable.

Jonas has good comedic timing and delivery (they all do), but they try to cram a joke after every line of dialogue which also bugs me. Felicia Day is pretty good now that she's seemingly over her mousey acting style.

For a Kickstarter project it's pretty good. The green screen could get fixed with a bigger budget but it might be what allows them to have Tom and Gypsy hover. The other main gripe is changing one of the bots voices is probably highly unlikely.

Ok, now to try episode 3.

I love their choice of films so far. They're really wonderfully goofy. Also, I wasn't completely sold on bringing back the invention exchange until episode 3.
Dr. Crow's Old Time Edible Silica Gel Packets
had me rolling!

I mentioned this (without title) in the last thread, but the apparent case of rights lost and gained is Wizards of the Lost Kingdom. It was released as a RiffTrax March 11, 2016, but sometime after that (not sure when) disappeared from their catalog.

Actually, doing a bit of searching it seems it was up for less than a week, so something was wrong with that one from the get-go.

The only thing I really don't care with the new series is the return of the invention exchange. I've honestly never liked it all that much.

lol "There's no beast in this movie."

Three episodes remain for me; I watch them tonight. I'm loving it. I hope it's on Netflix for years. All of the ingredients are there.

I finished my first watch-through of Season 11 last night and can report that my favorite episode and the one that made me laugh the hardest was 1105 Beast of Hollow Mountain. The entire
parade host segment
and the following 20 minutes or so had me laughing so hard I was crying and having difficulty breathing. Not since Resusci-Annie!

I've only seen the first episode, but so far I like it. The Reptilicus song was great. Everyone in the cast can actually sing now, it's almost unsettling. I do wish there were more segments with the Mads during the episode. And I'm having a tough time with the new Servo voice, because it's hard for me to tell if it's Jonah or Servo speaking at this point. They're different but I can't keep them straight. That's a bit of a failure of the writing because in the original Servo's personality was so distinct and arrogant you could tell his quips apart even in text. They've got Crow down, though.

It was neat, for me, to see Wil Wheaton in the episode. He's was my gateway to MST3K. He was on QVC in the 90s hawking some collectible or other and talking to the host about how he liked the show, so I decided to check it out if I ever got that channel. Anyway, he's a MSTie from way back.

Yeah, on Ep 7 now and the overall quality ramped up noticeably. The flow is there and everything feel way more natural.

WORLDSTAAAAR

Been a fan of MST3K since I first saw it on The Comedy Channel(one of Comedy Central's names before they settled on CC) in the early 90's.

I'm 3 episodes in and this is WAY better than I expected. It feels both new and familiar at the same time. I like the speed at which the riffs are coming, the more modern references, and... well just everything. Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt are good. The bits inside the SOL are great ("Every Country Has A Monster" is an instant classic, IMO). Even the commercial bumpers are charming in their own way.
I was blown away when I realized the music the band was playing in one of the episode 3 bumpers was the "Wild Rebels Cereal" commercial jingle from that episode.
(don't know how big a spoiler that is but better safe than sorry)

Kudos to everyone involved in making/funding this. So far, it's better than I could have hoped.

Well thanks to this season I know who Troy McClure shares his namesake with.

That movie
The Land That Time Forgot
has a really confusing moment that they riff on like it's a mistake in the movie, but it's actually something MST3K cut for time. The
German crew gets command of the sub again at gunpoint and promises to deliver the Americans to a German supply ship where they'll be shot. Then suddenly in the next scene the German captain is imprisoned and the Americans are in command, and now have gotten lost in the ocean. In the actual movie there's about 7 minutes where the Americans hatch a plan to secretly fire torpedoes and sink the supply ship, and gain command of the sub in the process. Then they get lost at sea and have to go beg the imprisoned German captain for help
(which you see in the episode).

Seriously, what kind of asshole strangles a raccoon?

Thanks, that threw me off, I was wondering what the hell happened.

IIRC
the guy in the waste suit who sends the movie commented that a takeover scene "leaked" and was mopped up into a refuse bin. Maybe his occasional comments before some Movie Signs are referencing the cut stuff. That would be pretty cool if the case.

what the fuck at random Red Hawk plot line in Cry Wilderness lol

why was Bigfoot even in that movie? What the hell @_@

Also go Ib Melchoir!

It's a real gem they found.
I love baffling movies.

Well they don't in the two episodes I watched, so my statement about those said two episodes stands. If the in-theater cast interactions get better (or exist at all) in the next 12, great! I look forward to it.

I'm surprised you're having difficulty telling Servo and Crow apart, but not Servo and Jonah. I think Crow sounds so similar to Trace that he's easy to pick out from the three.

So what's with the bubbles being used to cover up shitty cuts between takes? Could they just not afford multiple takes?

They did that in the original run as well.

It's just a show.
