[N-Conf] Pikmin 3

Jesus christ you guys need to get you facts right before hammering the game (or making excuses for it) like this.
Funny you'd say that, since it's exactly what it is! It started as a Wii game, remember?

If it was made from the ground up for Wii-U (which it wasn't) it probably would have had higher res detailed textures and stuff, but still, i think it looks great.

TBH I expected better graphically. Hopefully it's just because it's an "upgraded" Wii game.

Jesus, it wasn't built up from the ground for Wii U, how many times does this need to be said?

is it safe to assume this was meant to be a wii game, but they upped it to HD resolution and witheld it for wiiu? sure looks like it

Its not safe to assume, its fact.

The development for the Wii game was mainly planning stages (and some early early development stages) by a team consisting of a handful employees. They didn't expand the team size until they made the move to WiiU hardware.

The idea of Pikmin 3 was confirmed at E3 2008. Development began in early 2009. Mid 2010 development moved to Wii U and the team expanded in size.
The development team is EAD Software Development Group No. 4, under Hiroyuki Kimura.

It's simply wrong or a bad excuse if you think the visuals are unimpressive to say that it's just an 'upscaled wii game'. The final result will hardly have any traces from it's development on the Wii.

I hope there's more urban inspired levels, like the Underground in Pikmin 2, hinting towards the "post-humans Earth" theory.

Imagine guiding the Pikmin around a decayed, moss-covered version of the ol' Donkey Kong skyscraper construction site, for example.

Well, that's what i heard, but i think it looks fine either way. I think it looks impressive even.
Textures look way better than a lot of current gen games (even the grass, though flat in most parts for obvious reasons, is full of detail and not muddy). Lighting is good, Foliage looks great, everything has the right "shine" and it has the exactly right combination between realism and stylised art. The DoF suits the Macro world of the garden and insects.
Nice and smooth. The water, on second watch, looks good to.

It could have looked better in certain aspects. Low polycount is apparent, and a garden could use some great particle effects for atmosphere.
The water could use good refelction rhoughout the game.

I don't think it should look even more realistic or something.

This doesn't sound correct, the game was far into development on the Wii. As far as we have heard over the last year, they had plans to show it on the Wii last E3. Unless you have some sort of inside information on this?

snip.
Your entire post is my opinion as well. I'm very satisfied with the visuals and it's my absolutely must have of the year.

It's just that it bugs me that people (on boths sides) are arguing on a wrong premise.

Edit: Yeah sorry for not including sources. I just happen to be a huge Pikmin nut and have followed Pikmin 3 really closely. I can't seem to find that many 'official' sources to back up my claim (or rather I honestly didn't want to look at google links beyond the first page). But here's a short snippet about the team size and development (before expanding). I seem to recall Miyamoto going further into depth on this in what is probably the full interview or another one at the time. Most of the other stuff I got from Shikamaru Ninja when discussing the development process of the game with him.

Edit2: Now don't get me wrong. For all I know they could be building the game on the same engine as Pikmin2 obviously meaning that a lot off 'wii coding' would remain. But my point is that, that would have happened no matter if they had made the early stages with the wii in mind or the wii u in mind.

I love these photos.

Time limits???

Ugh. I've been waiting for this game, but my interest just dropped a bit. That was the thing I liked best about Pikmin 2 - no time limits.

Probably just daily on surface limits. Or even only in certain game modes... we do not know.

It's a specific game mode. (I liked the time limit in pikmin 1 though)

Pikmin 2 had a time limit as well if you weren't in a dungeon.

I think Pikmin 3 looks really nice but it should do, considering this is brand new Nintendo tech they showed it on. Does it look much better than anything else? Probably the best looking on the Wii-U but to say it rivals 360/PS3 stuff is not really true. Maybe if you compare PS3/360 launch titles.

I think it will do well and its nice to see more Pikmin but it ain't no graphical revolution. I still think Viva Piñata is a better looking game artistically.

Honestly I think the game looks nice myself. As I said though, I have definitely seen it mentioned a few times by gaffers with sources that the game had been quite far into production on the Wii. I'd have a hard time believing that it is truly built from the ground up as WiiU. If Shikimaru Ninja thinks that this actually started development on the WiiU earlier than that, perhaps he will post in this thread at some point and give us his take. Although I recall seeing him say that the game would have likely been released last year on the Wii.

Speaking of EAD 4, they are working on a bunch of games right now. Kind of crazy.

Looks fun! I want a Wii U now. Pikmin 2 is one of my favourite games, more hyped for this than anything else atm. <3 Pikmin, they're so adorable, makes me happy.

I know that and I don't care. At least Xenoblade had grass blades...and that's an open-world (so I hear? haven't played), 3rd party game that doesn't even focus on being close to the ground/small objects.

Whatever Nintendo's doing here looks bad. The textures are flat and noticeably bad.

Xenoblade is first party.

Xenoblade is first party.

2nd Party really right? Company owned by Nintendo, not actually produced and developed by Nintendo. It may as well be 1st party but how lazy they ended up being with it goes to show they did not see it as important as their own 1st party games.

It was produced by Nintendo. Nintendo SPD Production Group No. 2, it even has a co-director and scrip editor from Nintendo on the development team.

2nd party is a stupid term anyway. It's for people who really like lists.

I see. I stand corrected.

Really liked how they emphasised how deep the gameplay would be. I think using the Gamepad to organise separate Pikmin groups around the map will lend itself to some really creative puzzles.

Graphically it's...not bad. A definite step above 2, but not as much as I had hoped. But it's definitely beautiful and I'm just happy to finally see some gameplay footage. Would be nice if this came out around the Wii U's launch!

Seems so incredibly weird that Pikmin 3 lacks multiplayer, with the gameplay element of adding additional 'controllers/Olimars'. Even co-op could be viable. Quite a shame really, but at least the system has plenty of other options.

oh geeze I just missed this I guess

now this really IS a big problem. Pikmin 2 remains the only Gamecube game I still go back to in order to play the multiplayer. Its multiplayer modes were fantastic fun and very well fleshed out. I've spent probably in the order of 60 hours in multiplayer alone.

between the visuals and this news, I am really much less excited now. I expect low quality visuals from Nintendo, but I didn't expect a leap backwards in terms of content and modes :<

The time limit might also be an E3-demo thing. Don't wanna hold up lines etc, aren't most demos at E3 limited?

EDIT: Where are people hearing that it's only single player?

Ofcourse there is co-op. And are we sure there is no multiplayer??

Hopefully they'll beef it up to 1080p by launch and add some effects (the water reflections as discussed, and more self-shadowing).

For a beefed-up Wii game, I'm liking how this is looking! :D

Well, it's a bit more than that imo.

I dunno. I was just reading that comment, which sent a chill down my spine. One of the many things I couldn't wait for with Pikmin 3 was them bringing the multiplayer modes online. Both competitive and co-op modes were simply incredibly unique, engaging experiences that were a perfect doses of skill and balance.

I hope hope this guy is wrong. I didn't even care for Pikmin 1 (because besides being insanely short and content deprived, there was like nothing to do once you beat it - it was worth $15 at best), and one of the reasons Pikmin 2 became one of my favorite games of all time was due to the addition of these insanely awesome multiplayer modes.

One thing I'd like to (or pretty much have to) see confirmed is that you'll be able to complete it without losing any Pikmin (like the first two games).

I don't think I'll buy it if you can't. I loved playing the first two games that way. Hardcore mode. :)

I thought it was really odd at the conference that nintendo didn't really mention online at ALL for wii u.
