Why is atmosphere better conveyed on a more powerful platform?

Wii can produce a setting, music and sound effects that create atmosphere. Graphics is only really needed to make a setting..

(In case you were even remotely interested in a rational reply: Disgaeae 3 on PS3 is obviously better than Disgaea 3 would be on PS2 (or Dreamcast). At the same budget. This is true for any and all games -- even without any change in budget you can make a more beautiful game on better hardware. In fact this is even more true for most other games (like Fragile, presumably) since they don't rely so heavily on 2D elements)

Well, graphics obviously (or are you arguing that graphics are irrelevant to atmosphere? Then I simply have to disagree.). But 5.1 surround sound also contributes a lot to the atmosphere of a game while we are at it.

I would invite both of you to stop this debate and concentrate on talking about the game, but since we know nothing at all about it except for one image and a few broad facts there is little we could say.

That's not really true. We know that it's a dungeon crawler, and we've seen some art. And as I explained before, that art gave me the impression of it being a very atmospheric game, which in turn led to my half-joking remark. So it's not entirely baseless.

Absolutely. If the Wii controls will actually be used in a way that enhances immersion I'll eat some delicious crow. But my friend Ockham tells me I'm quite safe on that front.

How so? We have 2 theories: "Fragile will use the Wiimote to enhance immersion" and "Fragile won't ..." and not much additional information. So I chose the theory that requires fewer assumptions. I admit it's a bit of a broad interpretation and not quite scientific, but it's in line with the casual usage.
 
Hypocrisy again takes over a thread, a shame it has to be about a new IP being done for the Wii.

Getting tired of the "ATMOSPHERE, EPIC, GRAPHICS" crowd banging their tin-can drum in any thread where the platform of choice isn't as powerful as a competitor's heavy hitter. Did you all miss the entire past few generations of gaming where atmosphere was conveyed very well on much more limited scopes than what a Wii can achieve? Or are you all just wanting to stick your hypocrite badge higher up your arse?

PS2 had several games that achieved the ultimate in portraying an atmosphere that was worthy of pages of praise and yet it was technically the least powerful on paper out of the other two consoles.

Anyways i fully support RPGs on the Wii. Theres a serious lack of them.
 
Wow, I really like the art. Made me think of FFVIII straight away (guess the whole disused-looking railway thing).

I'm really happy to see these kinds of games coming out on the Wii. Seems to be turning into the 'all round' PSX/PS2 of its generation.

edit: and by the way, art is a FAR bigger determinant of a game's atmospheric merits than technical capability. FFVI and Chrono Trigger are, to this day, incredibly atmospheric games. The PSX FF games are. And the reason for that is they have excellent art/music. Those things count far more than any technical BS.
 
Without even entering the thread, I just knew this would have broken down into an argument about how this game is better suited to other systems. Everybody loves to talk about how Wii software sales are terrible and then go on to say that any halfway decent looking game should be on another platform. Retarded.

Anyway, here is hoping this game is good. Not that I really have a shortage of things to play but I love me some RPGs.

Very true. It is also true that these praise-worthy games would have been even more atmospheric on more powerful hardware. A good example is the widely echoed cry for a PS3 remake of SotC (or, heck, even FF7).

Also, no need to say "you all", I seem to be the only one :lol

About the thread hijacking: as I already said earlier I actually agree with speedpop, it's not a good thing. But it's also not too serious since there is very little of actual value to discuss concerning this game -- yet. I now have a pet theory: the reason why so many people get quite agitated when anything even close to "would be better on next-gen" is mentioned, even in passing, is that in their gamer heart they know it to be true!
 
I don't care if you were joking, frankly. The "should have been on..." comments are fucking irritating, no matter which console you're talking about. I trust the choices that the dev team made over random internet user #56685255.

Or maybe it is because the argument is stupid. Every system deserves quality games of all types. You can't say that certain genres are completely off limits for a console just because you don't think it will allow it to be all that it can be. It is, has been, and always will be a bad argument, even if you completely ignore the economic/business side.
 
A Wii RPG, yay! hard to get excited about anything with only a name and two artworks provided, though. :/

SotC atmosphere would not be improved in a Ps3 remake. The graphics would be spiffier sure..the framerate would be 60fps but it would still be the same stretch of land except now its shinier.

Actually, "fragile" spelled that way also means "frail" in English. I know that, and I'm not even a native speaker.

Point taken in terms of more power = more processing output - but this never stopped other developers in creating their own visions. There's a problem with remakes in that nostalgia harps at the strings and makes you dislike certain things in a remake. Happens with every game regardless of platform.

As for the "you all", I meant more as a context based upon the whole forum lately.

As that (and its implications) was the most important point of this whole discussion I'll stop here. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but most people seem to intensely dislike my presence in this thread

Not really a dungeon crawling fan (hate the stars, but i do enjoy RPGs with story) but hey new IPs are always welcome.

From the art sample it looks like they're trying to make it atmospheric and stuff. If it's like a postapocalyptic King's Field it would be awesome.

actually, we don't even know that for sure. all we can glean is that we will explore ruins. this implies a number of things (post apocalyptic, dungeon crawling, moody atmosphere, etc.), but it actually tells us nothing for sure. lets wait til next thursday to know for sure, shall we?

also, the reason why people don't like people don't like it when posters claim a game would be better on the PS360 because other posters get the same shit for wanting a game on the Wii from the PS360 group.

Anyways, yes, Voices of a Distant star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days is what the artwork reminds me of.

Wow. I wanted to have an attempt at trying to convince durante. Anyway here goes despite him not being able to see this.

Graphics have nothing to do with atmosphere. It is sound and the Wii can do 5.1 in some form. Even sometihing like "sweet home" on the NES oozed atmosphere. And i am not sure if you really want sound coming from behind you would add to the atmosphere as opposed to sound coming straight in front of you. It imo, comes down to the music. Music make or breaks an atmospheric game.

IMO for a game like they are trying to make here would be better suited if there was a system with a controller that goes beyond the Wiimote. Like with additions of a camera, mic and screen(sounds almost like a phone@_@). For a more versatile controller so that it could be used for a lot more things.

Uh... you have no idea what kind of game they're trying to make here beyond that it involves exploring ruins, and I'm not exactly sure why a camera or a microphone would help with that.
