Holy shit just caught up on this thread.......this is genuinely exciting news, if true.

PREDICTION TIME: If these microbes really are alien, then within the next century I'm sure we will have some kind of more advanced alien lifeform discovery (perhaps on another planet). :P
I think they've already found it, they are just getting the population conditioned for when they drop the news. They're just dropping breadcrumbs here and there until we get used to the fact that there's probably life out there then they will have found it.

Yeah, I wouldn't get my hopes up for what one site like this says. Or is this site reputed? But if it happens to be true, that's awesome.

Well it's right about one thing. One of the people who are speaking at the panel has been doing research on the arsenic lake looking for the possibility of arsenic-instead-of-phosphorus microbes. Therefore it stands to reason that if she's going to be part of a "change the way we look for life" announcement, she found what she was looking for so we can add that to the list of things to look for when looking for life.

Damn, thread needs a title change to reflect this amazing news. :o
It's not news if everyone is qualifying it with "if true."

But man do hope it's true. :^D

I'd love to hear Richard Dawkins talk about this.

Breaking News: NASA discovers we are not all connected. Dr. Tyson Told to, "Go to his room and think about what he's done."

It would be pretty sweet if NASA announced that the moon was going to be a featured venue on the USA 2022 World Cup bid.

Ok, after rummaging through the thread, I ran across what was causing the fuss...and yeah, that is definitely incredible. Of all places, Earth ends up being the spot that shows just how varied life can get. Shit doesn't happen solely inside the boxes we try to put them in, and things can and will find a way to happen. My only question would be, which came first? I would say that it came afterward because of how many things have evolved here to support the things we know as essential for life, but I have no idea how useful that type of thinking would be.

So amazing if this finally comes to light.

My thoughts exactly. :lol

What's kind of interesting is that I've pretty much spent my whole life wondering why the hell all scientists seemed to assume all life would operate exactly like life that we know it would if we ever found some elsewhere. The news (if correct) would be slightly surprising that it was found here, but not really surprising overall that life could be based on something else. My wife pretty much said the same thing when I told her the news.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat with you. It isn't surprising at all(still exciting as fuck) to hear about life based on something completely different...but the real kicker is that it's here on Earth as you said.

Fuck if this holds true I'm going to feel so fortunate to have lived during such an amazing discovery. I've got anxiety right now. I just blew up my facebook page with this news, the masses need to hear this. Two evolutions of life on Earth, or maybe coming from elsewhere...not matter what this is big.

I posted it on my facebook and no one gave a fuck. :(

I was definitely getting strange vibes at Mono Lake when I was there, I felt like I was dreaming. Also they have a really good ice cream shop there if anyone is interested in visiting. I ate too much and got a headache.

So far I have 4 "likes" on that status update. Also, I really doubt it will but I feel like a press conference about something of this magnitude would be televised on some network. Anyone know? Otherwise I think NASA usually streams their own on their website.

How do we know for certain that it's brand new life (spontaneous) and not just regular microbes who figured out a way to use arsenic?

It'll be streamed live on NASA's website and on NASA TV, at least.

Flip a coin. What are the odds you'll get heads the first time? 1/2.
Flip the coin again. What are the odds you'll get heads the second time? 1/2.

To calculate the odds of getting heads twice in a row, multiply the two fractions together. You get 1/4.

Since probability lies between 0 and 1 and you must multiply the fractions together to determine the odds of multiple occurrences, the odds of having something occur by chance DECREASES the more number of times you want it to occur. Therefore, the odds of this happening twice by chance are even more astronomically low than it happening once by chance, aren't they?
No no this is a different kind of probability. It's more like if the crime rate of a city is particularly high, the probability of you getting robbed / stabbed etc. if you go there are higher than somewhere else right? The probability of crime occurring doesn't get lower with a high frequency of crimes.
Also as you said the probability of throwing heads after you have thrown heads the first time is still 1/2. How many times it happens in a row isn't really relevant to the question. The question is how many times it has happened and how many times it could happen every time you toss a coin up in the air.

Creationists say that there was only one coin flip and there will only be one coin flip and it landed on heads because God wanted it that way.

Dec. 2nd 2010 - Biologists stationed at Mono Lake believe to have discovered microbes built on an arsenic based DNA structure. Potential to revolutionise biology and the study of the origin and evolution of life.

Dec. 14th 2010 - Operation 'Eco Dawn' begins. Deep lake diving and specimen collection efforts quadrupled.

Dec. 16 2010 - Contact lost with Mono Lake biology group. Suspected communication equipment failure. Recon team dispatched.

Dec. 18 2010 - No response from recon team and biology group. Whereabouts of both unknown.

IT BEGINS

Sounds good to me! If arsenic is fatal to man (well everything) what will be fatal to the arsenic monsters?

Penis?
