NBA Jam bundled with NBA Elite (360/PS3)

Why not bundle NBA Elite with NBA JAM...that'd make everyone happy.

Why not just make it a $40 game across all platforms and forget about Elite all together?
Why do all this run around bull-shit and give everyone a gimped version?

Like I said, this only proves that third parties still don't have a clue what they're doing.

Wii owners have bought other light gun shooters.
They however avoided DS:E like the plague.
My guess would be that they were wanting a much better experience than what was given them for $50.
Maybe something like... a real Dead Space game?
Then they give it away free to HD owners, confirming that even they know it wasn't worth the entry fee.

DS: E was awesome though. It is pretty shitty that they are just giving it away, but if no one bought it when it came out, why waste it? Might as well throw it onto DS2 to maybe sway some on the fence buyers on it.

Also, NBA Jam is going to sell like shit on the Wii, both for this reason and the fact that I just don't see Wii owners buying it.

Yeah, I don't get it... there's obviously demand for it on all platforms, so why not give it a retail release on all of them?

No way. Jam could have done great on the Wii, if they marketed to the WiiSports crowd. It's an arcade basketball game. Not a sports sim.

I don't understand the logic of putting hurdles in front of people who want to buy the game ("Only bundled with Game X!"), at an increased price ("Game X is $60!"), and with less features. This is stupid.

Well this sucks. I'm a just gonna buy the game, take the code out of the package and trade it right back in. Why would they assume the NBA Jam audience and the NBA Elite audience are the same people?

Here's how I'm handling this:

Wii version has online play, I'll get it.

If not,

I'll buy Elite for Jam, then cash it in.

If you're a Wii only owner, I completely understand how at this point, things feel really screwed up. Just hope for my first scenario I guess.

Maybe if the people who own a Wii actually purchased Dead Space: Extraction, this wouldn't have happened. The only people to blame here are the consumers.
Are you for real?

The WiiSports crowd probably couldn't care less about the existence of an HD version, so I'm not buying that it's doomed.

Uh, what did he say that's so objectionable? I understand the argument that Wii owners were screwed by EA making DSE on-rails, but arguing that they're being in any way screwed by a downloadable port over a year after the Wii version utterly bombed is ridiculous.

The only people this really hurts is Gamestop, who are going to have thousands of code-less copies of NBA Elite in their pre-owned section.
Nah, I'm pretty sure they're aware of the code and will adjust their buy-back price appropriately.

How have they handled these sort of things before (ie, music games with bundled export codes)?

Was already going to pick up NBA Elite anyways, so this makes me happy. Live was GARBAGE for years, but they delivered a great package with Live 10 -- most fun Ive had with a b-ball game in quite a few years. 2K is still a great series, but it has become stale in my opinion, and EA finally brought something fresh last year.

I wonder how many people just shitting on Live/Elite even gave it a try last year?

They [Live/Elite Team] also picked up the guy who really turned the NHL series around, so I have high expectations for Live this year. The fact that includes Jam is well is a pleasant surprise.

Unless the Wii version has no online play i'm not seeing what the huge problem with this is, to be honest.
EA is telling consumers that NBA jam is worth $0 by giving it away for free. They are then charging Wii consumers $40 or $50 for it. It is terrible marketing.

Over a year after the Wii version is released? People are really butthurt over that?

Now, this NBA Jam move is totally stupid, though.

butthurt? how do you even get that from my post? I only played a bit of Dead Space Extraction on the Wii and didn't enjoy it much. I just think it is funny how a big publisher is practically trolling the Wii at this point by selling freebie and downloadable games as full priced products on the system. As for a the game being released a year later, that didn't stop games like Bioshock on the PS3 from being released at full price despite the later release. Or CoD4 releasing on the Wii two years later at full price. But I'm not really that surprised. There are a quite a few retail Wii games that I confused for Wiiware games because of the quality of downloadable games on other systems (Boy and his Blod, Lost in Shadows, NBA Jam, etc.) EA just is less subtle about making that connection.

hmmm.... what's the difference... hmmm...

(Hint: those didn't bomb, and consequently weren't sitting in bargain bins by the time their belated ports were released.)

you said they were "trash[ing] the wii" by porting it "for free" (it's not, as it's only included with the LE) long after the Wii version bombed, which is ridiculous.

The Wii version gets more single player content I thought?

So if EA flipped the box so that they were selling NBA Jam for $60 and it came with a free copy of Elite, would that end your god damn crybaby tantrum? Do you really think that the wii userbase is reading GAF, shaking at their keyboards with rage as EA apparently fucks over the poor poor wii user who was no doubt certain to buy NBA Jam but now thanks to the indepth fact-finding at GAF is going to pass?

They're not giving it away for free though. You still have to buy NBA Elite. It's a value add (that is devoid of features the Wii version has).

I admit that if this version has online play and the Wii version doesn't it's stupid to label the Wii version as superior, however in that same stroke, I don't see how this is "undercutting" the Wii version except for those fans that wanted NBA Elite in the first place. If all you want is NBA Jam PS360 it will cost you 50 dollars, NBA Elite or no.

As far as I hear it does, but lets face it; the meat and potatoes of this game is the mutliplayer, and as such online play is paramount. If the Wii doesn't have online play I rescind my argument, but if it does I can't help but see this as just plain bitching from people who were never interested in Elite to begin with.

Well, they'll obviously sell the thing on PSN / XBLA eventually, and with Remix Tour as DLC. Yeah, now I'm definitely not buying the Wii version.

If Dead Space actually sold well, I would say EA screwed Wii owners But, since the game absolutely bombed, they have no right to complain at all about it.
Blaming an unsuccesful product onto your consumers is one of the worst, if not the worst conclusion one can extrapolate from the results.

There is a reason why I did say practically. Also not free, freebie. Difference being that one is free and the other is included with another product, or a bonus, extra, unlockable, whatever. And just for kicks, I did look up how Dead Space Extraction is included in Dead Space 2. It is indeed a Limited Edition, but that is the only way to get it on the PS3 and it is still the regular $60 price.

First point is valid

*points at all the shovelware on Wii*

One successful shovelware in the console and everyone jumps on the gun. One flop mature title and everyone bails out.

If they don't release this to XBLA/PSN for some amount of money a few months after Elite comes out, they are giant idiots.

Eric Hall said:

I don't think the existence of a PS3 version is what's being complained about. It's the idea that EA and others in the industry held it up as a barometer of core games on the Wii and then gimped it three ways by genre, price, and marketing (i.e. lack thereof). The fact that it's coming out as a PS3 release a year later is inconsequential to that.

Yep, don't think I wanna buy Elite just for this... Probably still sticking with 2K11 this year.

I know I said recently that Nintendo has th worst marketing scheme ever for Metroid other M, but this from EA is neck and neck. Un****ing-believable!

I thought you were permabanned. This thread just keeps disappointing.

:lol

I'm kind of surprised that no one predicted this. If you look at the release dates and the precedent with Dead Space it seems obvious.

Valve trolling PS3/360 owners who bought the Orange Box for $60 by giving away Team Fortress and Portal, both GOTY contenders, away for free to PC users. Along with all of the Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 DLC. Free. I think I'm going to send them an angry letter for being trolled so hard.

Plenty of people predicted this.

After reading this thread more thoroughly, I think this is only a poor idea to one group of people: The people who didn't want to pay more than 15 dollars for the title (also known as the "put it on PSN/XBLA" crowd). They're the only group that gets screwed. (Unless somehow Wii gamers were dying to buy NBA Elite.)

from what I hear, NBA Jam isn't all that great....I will NOT double dip again.

EA sells it's Project Ten Dollar content on XBL/PSN (Madden Online Franchise, Tiger Woods online crap, NBA Live DNA, etc.), so hopefully they will follow suit and offer Jam for $10 to $15. I'm not really interested in either Elite or 2K11 (2K10's craptastic online has made me rethink getting 2K11).

NBA Jam standalone would be slaughtered by 2k at retail, that's why.

Sorry, for $20 extra dollars I'd rather have 2 games. Ask for a $40 wii game instead of jacking up the price of Jam for us that don't have wii and are getting a sweet deal. This isn't our problem. Besides there should be a jam on PSN and XBLA anyway, and it won't cost $40.
