NDS Lite - 3 colors revealed

Such a liar :P

From what I can tell the screens are identical, but the backlighting will be able to be set one notch brighter than the original DS release. This should make stuff look more colorful, but it'sll be no Micro screen.
According to this and an earlier poster you're wrong?

Wow, the new battery life is awesome.

Brightness level 1: 15-19 hrs
level 2: 10-15
level 3: 7-11
level 4: 5-8
full charge time: 3hrs
Now this is damn impressive. I might have to trade for this alone.

CE logo = more than just a cap? RumblePak? Play-Yan DS?

I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about GBA games sticking out. GB games stick out a hell of a lot more than that in a GBA and I haven't heard people complain about that.

Does anybody know which of the brightness levels is comparable to the original DS brightness?

According to the manual, even the lowest brightness level is better than of the regular DS.

Where is on the manual?

yea i couldnt find anything inside the manual about the lowest brightness being better then orignal ds. Also, it aint a rumble pack... it would say it was in manual if it was.

Gamespot has a full report on it, and they hook us up with all details.

Gamespot said:
TOKYO--Nintendo today announced that the DS Lite will be released in three color models on its Japanese debut on March 2. The handheld will be available in "Crystal White," "Ice Blue," and "Enamel Navy," and sell for 16,800 yen ($142)--1,800 yen ($15) more than the original DS.

Together with the announcement, Nintendo revealed additional details about the DS Lite. First and foremost, it confirmed once and for all DS Lite can play Game Boy Advance games, and its cartridge slot will located at the same bottom rim of the handheld as the original DS. However, Nintendo notes that GBA cartridges will stick out by one centimeter when they're inserted to the DS Lite, due to the smaller form factor. The DS's card slot and power cord socket will be located in the same places as before, while the power switch and stylus holder have been relocated to the right edge of the handheld.

The DS Lite will come with four adjustable levels of screen brightness, with the maximum setting being five times as luminous as the original DS's. Battery life has also been improved. The original DS ran 6 to 10 hours on a full recharge, and the DS Lite runs for about the same number of hours on its maximum brightness. The new model can run 15 to 19 hours on its lowest brightness, 10 to 15 hours on its second level of brightness, 7 to 11 hours on its third level, and 5 to 8 hours on the maximum level. What's more, the DS Lite's battery recharges in three hours, which is an hour less than the original DS.

As previously reported, the DS Lite's body thickness has been reduced by a third (when folded), and it features a 20 percent weight reduction from 275 grams to 218 grams. The screen size remains unaffected, and both the top and bottom panels use 3 inch LCDs. The original DS used semi-transmissive LCDs for its two panels, but the DS Lite will use transmissive LCDs, which allows for higher levels of brightness.

The DS Lite will come with a new AC adapter that is not compatible with other Nintendo handhelds, including both the original DS and Game Boy Micro. There will be two styluses bundled with the DS Lite, and they'll come in the same body color as the handheld. The styluses will be one centimeter longer and one millimeter thicker than those included with the original DS. The DS Lite will also be bundled with a carrying strap, and a plastic dust cover that can snap into the GBA slot when empty.

That would be great (and the report from gamespot seems to fit to that, as the maximum brightness level is five times brighter than the original DS brightness level).

They obviously put a much better battery into the DS lite.

For one, we got over it 5 years ago. Also, other than the Zelda Oracle games, were there many major GB/C releases after GBA's launch?

EDIT: There's also the fact that with DS you can have a DS game and GBA cart in at the same time. With the GBA if you were playing a recent game your old cartridge wouldn't be sticking out of the machine at all, but with DS it was convenient to always have a backup game or rumble pak in the GBA slot.

If the cap is 1 cm less than a GBA cart's height, I don't think such a thing would be possible in our 3 physical dimensions.

I think dimension is the issue here; from the size of the DSL, it sounds like it came down to either GBA carts sticking out, or there being no stylus holder - which as I recall was one of the big E3 requests in response to the original DS unveiling hardware. I'll take an improved stylus over just losing them.

It will be interesting to see how the internals have been rearranged.

+
better screen with better brightness
better battery
better d pad
better stylus
smaller and lighter
sexy as hell

GBA cart sticks out... one cm!

I just preordered the white one from CGX (Gaming store that does special orders through ncsx) :o

Happy i am :)

BTW: Everyone knows in the US a new DS bundle is coming out in march, no idea what color but its in gamestops computers.

"Animal Crossing Nintendo DS Bundle"

gg nintendo milks the bundles again!

oh and a pearl pink SP2 comes out next month too (forgot about that)

1 cm doesn't bother me that much. Heck, orignal GBA also had GBC cart sticking out at least 1.5 cm or so. 1 cm is like a half (probably less) than an inch - it won't be a big deal.... I just hope that cover thingie stays "on". It would be shame if it keeps falling off like poorly made battery cover.

Black version would be nice - but the navy blue seems pretty neat too. I'm hoping for the US release that they'll have black version as well. Being either black/white kinda guy, I might end up getting the white one - but other colors are also very attractive IMHO...

Just one thing. Why are they keep discontinuing the production for some games? I was hoping to get Phoenix Wright when I get my DS light... Perhaps Nintendo should put up a petition site for additional production for some DS games.

I originally played First Hunt with the thumb nub, but switched to the stylus later on a whim. It ended up controlling exponentially better. I really do reccomend people to try and get over the initial awkwardness, as I've had much more success with the stylus.

if so, I'd reconsider buying one.
Is the cart sticking out ONE cm really more of a problem than the good things about the system(smaller, better screen, better battery life)?

Same here, I much prefer the stylus myself. Perhaps my thumbs are too big or something -_-

I agree. I stopped when the thing started scratching my screen.

"260 thousand colors"

Oh hell yes. This is the first time Ive gotten confirmation on this. I dont know why Nintendo was hiding this before. Dumbasses.

I had known that figure even before the DS launched.

I've never actually played first hunt but I just assumed it would be best with the thumb strap. Do you not need to press R at all? You couldn't with the stylus. Any other games work best with the thumb strap?

Results of a new poll of Japanese gamers regarding the DS lite.. (doesn't say whether it was scientific, but I doubt it)

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=8131
A survey of Japanese gamers by +D Games, and translated by weblog Yamakiyo, reveals that the majority of respondents indicated a desire for the redesigned version of Nintendo's DS handheld system, the DS Lite.

The DS Lite will feature a brighter screen comparable to the Game Boy Micro's, as well as a smaller and lighter form factor.

63% overall spoke of their intentions to purchase the new hardware revision. 27% of the respondents already own a DS but say they will upgrade when the system is released, and 36% said they don't own a DS but the Lite version has convinced them to purchase one. Only 35% of those polled did not own a DS and had no plans to buy the system, in either variety.

The Nintendo DS Lite will launch in Japan on March 2nd, in three color varieties: Crystal White, Ice Blue, and Enamel Navy. No U.S. release date has been announced for the hardware revision, though Nintendo of America VP of marketing Reggie Fils-Aime has been vocal about the system, indicating obvious intentions to release it in English-speaking territories eventually.

Ya. I can get a micro, which is smaller, better screen(than current DS), dunno about battery life, for $90.. and the cart doesn't stick out. I have a DS where the cart doesn't stick out. Could also get a SP+ and the cart wouldn't stick out.
Maybe I'll change my mind when I see one in person or see a different angle, but I dunno. 1cm is 1cm too much from that picture.

lol. spoiled.

nah, all I have is a DS in terms of Nintendo handhelds. I'm saying I could get other systems that don't have problems for cheaper if I wanted.

I just asked if it was possible for a rom cart to be smaller than a typical GBA cart, and I get this? I'm sure I'm not alone in worrying about the 1cm.

lol some people are so anal about silly things.

The GBA game sticking out isn't going to get in the way or look ugly, I'm glad its so damn small a GBA game can't fit in! Would've hated for the unit to be 1cm bigger or a bit thicker thats for sure.

Its not going to be anymore unsightly than a cell phone aerial or an N^$ pad with rumble pack in or a PSP with dpad attachment etc.

We're gamers, we should be used to this kind of thing.

I broke down and ordered one to go with Mana :(

Mana + Tempest + New Mario Bros. on Micro quality screen = worth the $200 upgrade >_< I'm a crack addict and Nintendo is my pimp.

Are those all official?

:lol :lol :lol Shilbar Mist... Teehee.

From 2ch judging by the text :)

I think there is something up with that empty cartridge cover as well now, after the comment in the UK Nintendo Offical Magazine thread about the DS Lite having an unannounced feature.

If it was just a cover, why make it plug in so far it connects? I'm sure they'd save the money and just have a small rubber plug. What with the CE logo as well, I think it may be rumble pack as standard now.

For those who missed it:

So just a simple yes or no.
The rev has something cool still to be announced that youare aware of and we will like?

Absolutely. So does the DS Lite actually.

We'll find out next week I guess.

When is DS lite scheduled for release in NA? im aware that the japanese release is in early march, so hopefully we wont have to wait too long.
