Need for Speed (2015, Full Reboot, PC/PS4/XB1, Ghost) Reveal Trailer

Seriously, why wouldn't the game look as good as the teaser?
It didn't show anything incredible, it was a constant blur with tons of filters.

What exactly was impressive about that teaser?

I don't understand it either. The camera effects masked a lot.

Why would they not include daytime races...? lol

It's the 'cheapest' way to cast the illusion of beauty.

Depth of field with lots of lights in the background.
Constant colorful 'in-your-face' reflection on the cars.
Curiously always wet streets that reflects the city lights/colors.
Motion-blurred night lights.

All of the above set at the default: Overuse!

All effective techniques that play to the human senses, but you just know they will utterly abuse it.

"Reboot" of Need for Speed, honestly what does that even mean?

Hope this is good, I liked Most Wanted a lot but wasn't feeling Rivals. Those are the only two I have experience with.

Yeah it really doesn't look that great. But admitting that would get in the way of the "publisher is lying" narrative.

Or like they said underground races usually only happen at night. Or that the underground series itself was always set at night.

Because it'll be a huge departure from the last 4 or so NFS titles. So they're rebooting it with new mechanics and gameplay systems.

Since everyone is questioning the graphics, I won't be surprised if the game ends up looking like what's in the trailer. Other than the impressive lighting, everything else in the game looks like what is possible with current gen hardware. It's seems that people forget that as the console generations go on, games tend to look better.

As for the new direction or "reboot" of the series, this pretty much looks like Underground and I don't know why people in this thread are getting upset. The main staples of the Underground series is the car customization and night racing and this is what I see in this trailer.

I really liked Rivals and it's still my favorite racing game this gen because of the simple, but tight gameplay, straight forward objectives, and a great open world setting. It's cool that Ghost is going back to the Underground setting, but with the setting it's already eliminating a full day-night cycle and it looks like it will be skewing more to a tuner car vehicle set list. With that tuner car mindset it might mean the removal of European exotics like Lamborghini's and Ferrari's, which are my favorites. As for the po po being in this game, as long as it's not annoying as they are in Rivals and there isn't what I always think is a forced Cop campaign, it's a NFS trademark. It's good to see that Ghost is behind this and I'll be looking forward to more coverage.

If Ghost Games truly saw the Underground games as their main source of influence then they would have seen that they didn't have police in those games.

Also rebooting a racing series is just hilarious, and pointless.

"cops"

god dammit, wbt NFS where you just race other people not having to deal with ramming, spikes, emp and other shit -.-

Thank you! One of the things I loved about the Underground series was just driving around the city. I loved exploring and finding new shops. I haven't been able to do that since, without ending up in a high speed chase with helicopters and spike strips.

People just have different preferences. I personally don't care for it and would prefer closed circuit or point to point races without the interference of commuter traffic and cops trying to smash my shit in every 2 seconds. That being said, expecting anything else from need for speed, considering who their publisher is and what market trends are is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don't get the hate for open world. Everyone wants an NFSU2 reboot, and that game was open world, but open world is confirmed and people are treating is as a negative. What gives? Open world games are amazing.

It's just the negativity that surrounds most gamers. It's something that I've learned to deal with if I'm going to continue reading forums. It fucking sucks how most people start shitting on the graphics immediately as if they have a crystal ball predicting the future. I understand that they've been disappointed in the past with downgrades and such but accusing a game now of being downgraded in the future is just childish.

After all, I don't remember EA lying about graphics of any NFS game. I remember when Rivals was first revealed it looked amazing and it wasn't downgraded at all.

The only problem I have with open world racing is that it's a pain in the ass to navigate most of the time and having to repeatedly look at a mini-map though some games finally started doing a better job of reducing that requirement by having better methods of showing you where you should go. I like open world even though the NFS games and most racing games in general have been overly restrictive with it. Rivals was the first Criterion involved game I bought last generation that I did not platinum, fuck I regret buying it on last gen, it clearly needed more time in development. From the horrible connection issues and the stupid host set up where you could also get booted at any second because some random person is a host to just feeling awful due to the frame rate and IIRC stuff popping up.

As for this and the Underground games, meh... I can't stand the underground racing culture that the Fast and Furious movies brought to the mainstream. Well, that's less the culture and more the idiots that those movies drew in and started my continued annoyance with nitro/nitrous (oxide)/N2O being refereed to as "NOS" because that brand was featured in the first movie.

I imagine that if I buy this game I'll be playing with chat on mute like I ended up doing with GTA V. Won't be buying on day one like I did with the modern versions of Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted. At least the PC version will certainly be capable of 60FPS this time around by default, right?

I wish we could get a new Burnout. =( Paradise was my first PS3 racing game and it was awesome even with the same issue with navigation.

I quite like open world for this type of racing game, but not sure if a 'nocturnal' won't get a bit tedious. Hopefully dusk is fairly bright.

Didn't these developers last create NFS: Rivals.

That open world was shit, especially when you compare it to something like Forza Horizon 2. So I'm a bit worried about there attempts.
I didn't play Rivals myself so I'm not sure. Honestly though I'm very wary of when games are described as "shit" or bad when it comes to GAF. I've found hyperbole is quite rampant on here and many of the games I've enjoyed have been shat on by many here lol. Everyone's free to their devices but it's hard for me to go by that sort of word of mouth.

Well this is,a reboot. Knowing EA there may not be a day Cycle. There is no reason to do a "Full Reboot" of NFS. The games have had different themes every year. The only reason to say reboot is,for an excuse for the things that will be missing from the game.

You should be wary. Rivals was fun. Not as good as Hot Pursuit or Burnout Paradise but still a very good action-racer.

The original need for speed was so great on the 3do. The psx and saturn and pc ports are actually very different.
I wouldn't say THAT different. They made changes to the menu design and speed of the game, among other things.

The 3DO version was interesting but ultimately the frame-rate is simply too low.

The cops thing does worry me only because they played (I think) way too large a role in recent games. Especially Rivals. What I loved about the Wii U version of Most Wanted was that you could turn them off. I don't mind having cops, but if they end up being the focus, that takes away from the racing.

Please Ghost games, don't let the cops be the focus. Let us RACE. Please please please.

So people gon complain about this game being only at night but we gon look back at UG1 and UG2 which were both only at night and call them the best games in the series.

Ok.

OK

The strangest thing is, you would think, GAF being smarter than people who aren't well-informed in gaming would logically just assume, yeah, it'll look like Rivals... probably slightly better but not drastically

I don't get the open-world hate here. NFS has often been open-world and now that we're getting back to street racing, in the streets, open-world makes complete sense. That was part of the fun of Underground 2, driving around to find a new garage or paint shop, customizing your car and then taking it back out on the street, just for the drive and to look at what you had done.

I know we've only seen a small clip, but honestly this looks to be the Need For Speed I've been wanting, an Underground for the modern day, with more modern modifications to the cars, and lower-tier cars to mod. Hopefully the 2015 Mustang GT and the Porsche are near the top of the food chain for this one, and please don't forget to throw some classic muscle in there, Ghost games.

Looks like they're giving the people what they want. I'm actually quite interested to see what the narrative experience is like. The Run intrigued me with that aspect but as the developers said, it wasn't executed too well.

The dev said it had a day/night cycle in the GameSpot article.

Sorry, I do tend to exaggerate a bit.

The open-world wasn't very well designed. Straight-aways and areas where the roads twist but little interconnection. So if you were heading down a road that road was your only option for quite a while.

Navigating the world wasn't very interesting, and races fairly simple, meaning very little challenge in the racing (IMO). I guess the intention was to capture a sense of speed but playing that then playing something like Forza Horizon 2 I realized how much strategy was lost in the track design.

But Rivals wasn't a city so this new game will differ in at least that aspect.

that in game footage line is straight up ducktales .

But they do have my curiosity.

People can hate on Need For Speed: World but besides it's Microtransactions it was the closest we had been to a classic Need For Speed: Underground game. Game was pretty fun when it first came out.

R.I.P to Black Box though, EA sabotaged the hell out of them :'(

Exactly, the teaser didn't show shit, it was all blurry shakycam, so it's not really claiming anything or promising anything about how that would look with a proper cam.

Also, it's at night with rain effects. All current-gen games look great at night with rain. Batman, WatchDogs, Infamous, etc. Apparently all those rainy reflection effects are a lot easier to get right than a killer look with daylight.

But I guess that :

Yeah it really doesn't look that great. But admitting that would get in the way of the "publisher is lying" narrative.

Indeed.

Edit : said it better than me :)
It's the 'cheapest' way to cast the illusion of beauty.

Motion-blurred night lights.

Will wait for some actual gameplay before coming to any conclusions. Though like people have said please don't let the cops be like Rivals
